It does play WMA and MP3, but I have not experimented enough to determine whether VBR is supported.
Also, while it will convert PAL VCD/SVCD to NTSC, it does not convert PAL DVD to NTSC. That is really the only drawback to this player. (I don't consider non-DivX/XviD playback a drawback.) |

Just picked this unit up from the Best Buy in Penatgon City, VA for $89 + tax. I was looking for something to replace my Sony DVP-NC615 5-disk changer that could play VR formatted disks. The unit seems to play them just fine.
The remote is about the only negative I can see so far, but I guess I'll get used to it. |

This thing reads all the DVD-Rs that all the Sony DVD changers refused to play. Aside from a reliable DVD chnager to play DVD-R backups, I was looking for one with CD-Text capability because I don't make inserts for my CD-Rs. This Panasonic displays all the info I put on the discs - album artist, album title, song artist, song title. All of the Sony changers (665, 675, 685) I tried could only display the album title.
A further note... I'm not sure if this applies to DVD players... but the Sony professional VTRs we used in video production were junk. The Panasonic VTRs outlasted the Sonys by years. For reliablity, go Panasonic. |

I was primarily looking for a 'VCD' changer. This unit has jumpy, unacceptable playback with VCDs, specifically VCD series originating from China. Our KLH and APEX play w/o problems.
Currently no region hack. Will not play Chinese DVDs, or convert PAL to NTSC.

| This thing plays everything I've put into it. No problems. I bought this to replace a Sony DVP-S550. My old Sony wouldn't play anything burned. I'm also now archiving my Sony 5 cd changer since this Panasonic holds 5 cds/dvds. No need for the extra component. Buy the Panasonic F65 and you won't be sorry. Who cares if this doesn't have a built in DTS/Dolby Digital Decoder? You don't need it if your receiver has it built in? The blue light on my receiver lights up when it gets the DTS/Dolby Digital signal from my Panasonic F65. |

I just really wanted to let every one know that there are diff. models for this player ther tis the F65, F65A. Also will find some that say F65K or F65S.
The K and S refer to the color k=Black and S=for silver.
The main one U should be concerned with is the F65 versus the F65A, as the A has a few more of the features you want, The F65 will not play WMA,HighMat, and/or Jpeg disk,. (also mentions f61. but won't go any further with that here).
Hope this helps someone |

| Have tried with various name-brand DVD+R and DVD+RW discs. So far, it has not had a problem with any of them. Also plays all the VCDs that I've thrown at it as well. A great deal on a very nice unit. |

Plays SVCDs with the the VCD header trick, regular SVCDs, and KVCDs (see www.kvcd.net for info). The only problem is that sometimes the picture sometimes stutters and you have to hit stop, then play again to get it to play smoothly. I'm not sure what the stuttering discs have in common.
I do have some problems with the player's interface and layout. By default, the player will stop after playing a single (V)CD. You have to push the "CD Sequential" button to play all (V)CDs in the player. Turning CD Sequential on also starts the VCD from the beginning and turns off playback control.
Also the discs are numbered backwards from my old JVC CD changer (disc 1 on the right, disc 2 on the left). This wouldn't be a problem, except if you put two discs in the tray, it starts playing disc 2! You have to put the first disc in, hit disc skip until the next higher holder is visible, then keep hitting disc skip (it skips two discs when the tray is open and nothing is playing) until the first disc visible on the left hand side (so the second disc with be "behind" the first inside the player).
Other than the baffling tray layout and the stuttering, this is a great player. It has the best VCD support of any player I've had great picture quality. |

I bought this unit to replace my Sony DVP-NS700P which I loved but the only problem was it didn't play dvd-r/+ and that is a must when you have a DVD Burner. I didn't think it would be as great as it was for the price and a 5 disc changer I thought it would be so so, but after I put in my first movie the picutre blew me away I love it!!!! I have been a SONY lover but Panasonic has turned me into a PANASONIC lover now!!!
I have used TDK DVD-R, KYPHERMEDIA DVD-R & DVD+R, Princo DVD-R & OPTORITE DVD +/- media with no problems what so ever it has read everything I have thrown at it so far. A lot of people are concerned about the remote, well I don't really care I have a nice all in one unit that operates everything. This is a must but. I got it a AMAZON.COM for $109 with free s/h |

| So far it has met all my needs. VCDs and SVCDS work great. I picked up this unit becouse of the fact that it automatically will go to the next cd if there are 2+ per movie. Does not work that way with normal DVD's though. I only give it an 8 because I havnt played with much but VCD, and SVCD. The mp3 function works but the interface/control kinda sucks. I have only used TDK media. |

Plays most of everything I throw at it, however, some generic silver-top CD-Rs for VCD and SVCD either fail completely, stutter, or skip. Have not tried these CD-Rs without writing titles in felt on the tops. Any other media that is not silver-top with definate areas for writing labels seem to work very well. Plays DVD-RWs (verbatim) backups made from dvdxcopy express very well too. Burned disk scan at startup is a little slow.
This is replacing a Pioneer DV-434 that I loved, but died and was too costly to repair. Overall quite happy with this unit. |

This guy has played everything I asked it to in NTSC and PAL.. After spending the weekend returning players who claim to handle VCD, SVCD, DVD-R and DVD-RW in both NTSC and PAL I finally found one that simply deals with it. My wife Thai and has a growing collection of PAL VCD's from SouthEast Asia. My son, on the other hand, has a growing collection for our friends at Centropy. Finding a player that can handle both collections has be difficult but the F65/F85 has not refused a single disk. Anddd,, it can even be set to auto loads/play the 2nd or 3rd disks of a given set..
I haven't confirmed this yet, but, I was told that the differences between the F65 and F85 is that the F85 has a Dolby5.1 decoder with standard rca outputs where the F65 has the normal optical 5.1 out..
If been burning Memorix CD-RW 80min X4 on HP, Pioneer, and Toshiba Burners. And using a Pioneer A03 to burn DVDs on Verbatim blanks..
The remote is the only area I would like to see improved. If not for that I'd have given a score of 10..

| I bought this player because it says that it supports the highMat format. This format is supposed to let you play .wmv MPG4 video files. However, it did not work because this player only supports HighMat audio and HighMat images. Panasonic will release a HighMat Video DVD player later this year and that should be awesome. In the meantime don't waste your money on this player if you think it will play .MPG4. Check out www.highmat.com for more info on the highMat format. VCD and SVCD worked very well though. |
