Comments:
This DVD player is highly sought after for the following reasons:

It's basically the same thing as the famous RP82, featuring that DCDI interlacer and Panasonic's best MPEG decoder (they don't make them any better).
Reads all kinds of writeable media.
MP3/VCD/SVCD playback.
Much heavier than the RP32, a good sign of construction quality.
This model was so expensive to make that Panasonic couldn't make a profit on it.

In other words, this is one of the highest-quality DVD players you can get for a reasonable price. But there are some drawbacks:

It has trouble playing high-bitrate SVCDs. It skips frames very noticably, giving choppy playback. This is probably due to a slow drive. I burn-tested the discs in Kprobe and they had error averages less than 1.0.
No PAL support.
No known region-free hack.
No known Macrovision hack.
No digital-coax audio output.
No 6-channel analog audio output.
No support for desirable formats like Divx.
Firmware is not upgradeable by the end-user.
Region-free modchip costs $70, and lacks full PAL support.
The all-purpose Panasonic CD and remote are not known to hack this (according to my research, at least).

It's a bummer that this thing has such trouble with SVCDs, what a waste of a good MPEG decoder. Not only that, but the Philips DVP/642 lacks all of the drawbacks except 6-channel output; and it costs less than the modchip.

The XP50 model is supposed to be exactly like the XP30, but with analog 6-channel output and full DVD-Audio support.

Comments:
Legendary quality MPEG decoder and it's also got the Faroudja deinterlacing chip as well. Even VCDs look better on this thing than other players.

This is a great player for those seeking the highest possible video quality (as good as some $500-$1000 players), at a very reasonable price (if you can still find them).

Those looking for players that can play all manner of non-standard video files (ie. divx, xvid, etc...) will be disappointed. But most of those players are pretty sad when it comes down to really scrutinizing the video quality. If your display is of sufficiently high quality, you *will* see the difference in picture quality between this and lesser players.

I generally only author standard-compliant discs (easiest to share with others, obviously), mostly with original content that I've created myself.

I've made VCDs and SVCDs on both CD-R and CD-RW. I've used all manner of CD-Rs in this player, from brand name to cheapo generics, and have never had any issues. These discs were burned on a Samsung 52x, a yamaha 16x and an old acer 4x burner on a windows PCs running win2k and winXP. These were using MPEG video from various sources, and mostly authored using Nero. I've only used VCD menus once, using the built in menu authoring found in Nero. Seems to work fine.

I've also authored DVD Video on DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW. All work fine in this player, using ritek 2x -RW, meritline 2x +RW, and BeALL 4x -R (basically the cheapest stuff in each category from meritline.com), using a Pioneer DVR-106D burner on a dual G4 450MHz macintosh running OSX. Most of the DVDs were authored in DVD Studio Pro (versions 1.5 and 2.0) using mpeg2 video encoded in FCP4 and AC3 audio encoded in Apack. Discs were burned using Toast (versions 5.2 and 6.0), and I've not had any problems with this player playing any of these discs.

I don't suppose I'll ever really use +RW, I just bought one disc to check it out since no one on here had tried it out yet.

Picked this up from Outpost.com, the last one in a clearance. $199 included a matching 5.1 receiver and then another $50 mail in rebate. Dumping the reciever on Egay which makes this almost a freebie. Outstanding Progressive scan output, and has the Foruda chipset.

I was looking for not too expencive ($200-$300) DVD player with good progressive scan output.
I use it with Runco projector (screen size 40"x72") and picture is sharp, stable, exactly as described in "DVD Benchmark" http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.c ... amp;mpeg=0

THis is a great player for those who value PQ in a DVD player.

Too bad Panasonic will be discontinuing this model as well as several other of their mid-end players. They are no going to focus on the low-end area of DVD players and keep their flagship models. I suggest you find these while you can.

This player rocks. It delivers a stunning picture on my HDTV ready Pioneer TV. Almost 3D!! I confirmed that it plays VCD and SVCD as well as DVD-r. Interesting point about DVD-r though. According to their website it will only play DVD-r's that are "finished properly" I have had some that didn't work, but I reburned them on the same cheapo media using a diiffrent app (disc juggler 4.0) and it worked fine.

Get this baby while you still can

CDR media tested = all work fine.
