re: Telstar's comment on MPEG DNR - great feature for those of us record in VCD format. Very nice job of cleaning up typical VCD / MPEG-1 type of artifacts.

Comments:
This is basically an S35 model plus DVD-Audio and MPEG DNR functions, so I am surprised that the overall rating of this model is lower than that of the S35. This is actually one of the better DVD players manufactured by Panasonic in terms of cost/performance ratio and I bought it mainly for its compatibility with the DVD-VR mode on DVD-RAM and DVD-RW(and even on DVD+RW)discs. The only weakness to me seems to be its JPEG display functions, but I really don't need it on a DVD player. If you need VCD/SVCD/JPEG compatibility on a DVD player, this should not be your first choice, but if you need DVD-VR and DVD-Video compatibility on all DVD media format, this is definitely one of the best. It's too bad that Panasonic eliminated the DVD-RAM compatibility on its new S25 model. If Panasonic really wants widespread acceptance to its DVD-RAM recorders, they'd better add RAM compatility on every DVD player they manufacture. Just my two cents.

I may be purchasing a Dell computer with the DVD+RW burner. Will a DVD+R recording play on the Panasonic S55? The owner's manual is not clear.

Comments:
I justified the purchase of a new DVD so that we could play back our JPEG disks and also multi-album 'favorites' of MP3/WMA.

The unit was sent back the next day.

I tried out some of my DVD-R disks (Memorex 4X and 'Pro-Line' 1X) along with CD-R disks (Memorex 48X 80 Min) and those all worked flawlessly.

The reason for the return was twofold;
1) No S-Video output; Until we upgrade our TV we have only analog or S-Video input available. I used the enclosed S-Video cable and got a really lousy picture. Granted, a better analog cable may have improved things, but I did not try one. The DVD player had only nickel plated RCA-jack analog and component video outputs, plus right/left channel audio and a digital output. No S-Video was unacceptable.

2) Slow and jerky JPEG playback. When a CD with a lot of JPEGS from our five megapixal digital camera was inserted (average file size around 850k), the picture was displayed and the option for slide show was available.

Unfortunately, it took several seconds (probably about five each, it seemed like 30) for the picture to slowly appear on the screen as though it was downloading from an old 28k internet connection.

Combine the slow JPEG picture display with a very fuzzy image from the analog connection (or the units conversion to TV display) and the experience was not a good one.

Amazon took the unit back very easily. Kudos’ to Amazon.

Excellent player. Note that it has discrete on/off IR commands, vastly simplfying macro programming a universal HT remote. Does NOT support DVD-MP3 or DVD-WMA, unfortunately.

Plays commercial DVDs fine. Unfortunately, it stinks at playing VCDs that I've tried on many of my friends older DVD players! Skips and jumps around like a roach on hot asphalt, with terrible video artifices, freezing and audio skipping.

VCD menus DO work, but what good is that, if the files they're linked to don't play properly?

I've taken the Panasonic S55 back today, and gotten a better, less expensive Panasonic S35K ($58.00!) to replace it. Apparently, you DON'T always get what you pay for.

Played some of my VCD's with no problem, but some of them were very jerky and lot of sound distortion. Are there any firmware upgrades for this player ?

Just got this today....put all my media that I use in it and it played everything no problem.

Fuji DVD, Fuji CD-R, Imation CD-R....everything plays fine.

Would definitely reccomend this player especially if you need a built in decoder.

Comments:
Picture looks great playing DVDs (comparable to my Sony player), sound is great. Does JPEG (not motion JPEG tho, and not 256 color JPEG), doesn't play raw MPEG's placed on a disc, didn't try WMA, but it won't play ASF. MP3 worked fine.. from what I could tell it was using the internal info and not the filenames. SVCD seemed fine (didn't use header trick). Tested VCD resolution at 720x480, and 2500 kbit/sec.. it was fine (except for the obvious artifacts caused by such a low bitrate for that rez). Less artifacts than my Sony player, and there are several enhancement modes for dealing with 'em. Cheap/generic media was not a problem for this player (dark blue and very light green discs worked great, and of course the more expensive aqua).

*** VCD WARNING *** This player has a major problem playing NTSC (not NTSC Film) framerate VCD's:

If a VCD's framefrate is NTSC Film (23.976 fps) then everything plays great.

If a VCD's framefrate is NTSC (29.97) then it skips like crazy (I'm guessing a problem with the internal framerate conversion). After a while they become somewhat watchable (I got used to it), but this is a major flaw in the player.

There is a long (5-7 sec) pause when loading any kind of disc (DVD, VCD, SVCD, MP3, JPEG). The remote control is horrible (layout and effectiveness), but that is normal for Panasonic remotes so I was expecting this. The setup and options menus are complicated and the manual is not much help (no index, for example).

In summary, the A/V components appear to be high quality, but the programming side of the player needs some major work. I am back in search of a quality replacement for my Sony player..

6/10 for bad VCD playback, menus, remote, and manual.
