For those who own the DVD recorder drive LG GSA-4163B, so they could know that the Panasonic S27 Player can successfully read a DVD-R recorded with the LG drive. I used a Maxell DVD-R 4.7Gb media.

I have a commercially produced DVD-R disc. This Panasonic player recognizes the disc, plays the video just fine but the audio is very chopped up. The box the unit comes in and the official web site both say this unit plays the DVD-R format.

BUT THIS PANASONIC DVD PLAYER ONLY PLAYS DVD-R DISCS CREATED ON PANASONIC EQUIPMENT!!!!

Says so in the manual and I confirmed it on their help line.

Stupid, stupid, stupid and this is one customer that is totally ------ with Panasonic for misleading advertising.

So far so good, will play just about anything that I throw at it and for the price I have no real complaints yet. The only problem that I found so far is with dual-layer dvd+r discs. The first one that I burnt worked up to the point where the "layer break" occured and then just "froze" and eventually gave an "L1" error. After a little reading and finding out that this is a common problem with alot of standalone players, the next 5 that I burnt worked great with no problems using verbatium datalife dvd+r DL discs and changing the "book-type" setting to "dvd-rom" in DVD Decrypter. No freezing or nothing............Hurray

Comments:
This report will be of interest chiefly to individuals like myself who had hoped that this machine would play videos which I had burned to CD-Rs or CD-RWs. This machine will not play them: it gives the message on the screen "You inserted a disc the machine cannot play."

The documentation that comes with the player, and applies to the USA and Canada, lists the following discs that CANNOT be played:

DVD-Audio, DVD-ROM, CD-ROM, CDV, CD-G, DVD+R, +RW, DVD-RW, SACD, Divx Video Discs and Photo CD, DVD-RAM that cannot be removed from their cartridge, 2.6GB and 5.2GB DVD-RAM, and "Chaoji VCD" available on the market including CVD, DVCD and SVCD that do not conform to IEC62107.

The documentation lists the discs that can be played, with their associated qualifications, as follows:

DVD-RAM with the logo "DVD RAM RAM 4.7" It will play RAM recorded using Version 1.1 of the Video Recording Format(a unified video recording standard, that have been recorded with DVD Video recorders, DVD video cameras, personal computers, etc. The discs must be removed from their cartridge before use. It will play JPEGs recorded on this type of disc using the DCF(Design Rule for Camera File system) standard, recorded with Panasonic DVD-Video Recorders.

DVD-Video with the logo "DVD VIDEO"

DVD-R with the logo "DVD R R4.7" Panasonic DVD-R that has been recorded and finalized on a Panasonic DVD-Video recorders or DVD Video cameras are played as DVD-Video on this unit.

Video CD with the logo "Compact Disc Digital Video"

SVCD with the following logo 'Compact Disc Super Video" as long as it conforms to IEC62107

The last two discs I learned from a salesperson at Sam Goody and a search on the web for "Chaoji VCD" never gained much acceptance in the West and are used chiefly in China and other parts of Southeast Asia. I was unable to find them even when I searched European distributors.

CD discs with the following logos: "Compact Disc Digital Audio" or "Compact Disc Digital Audio Text"

CD-R or CD-RW discs (audio recording discs) recorded with the following formats: WMA, MP3, JPEG, CD, VCD. It notes that sessions should be closed or finalized after recording to the disc. HighMAT discs will play only the WMA, MP3 or JPEG files.

Audio discs in stereo with the following logos can be -played "Dolby Digital" or "Digital dts Surround"

Such is the info according to Panasonic's documtnation for the USA and Canada.

The machine was easy to setup, and I did finally need to get a DVD as video stores stock fewer and fewer videos, so I am not going to slash my wrists over not being able to meet my original goal. One of the consumer reporting units gave it an excellent rating.

Excellent website guys, but I wish I had this info from the documentation before I purchased. Just goes to show how complex the DVD purchase decision can be.

Progressive scanning only works on TVs that support it. My set is a little over 10 years old.

Actually plays the first layer of the Dual Layer disc, but can not play anything on the second half. Little dissapointing considering it fairs so well under everything else. Would have ranked much higher if this feature would have worked.

Dissappointed with this player. I read great reviews on the web and because of Technics system owner, I wanted to use the S27 as a replace for my missing CD-player. But, it refused to play 95% of my CD-R audio discs. It played only PLATINUM, but no IMATION, VERBATIM or no-name CD-R discs (all of them playable on other CD players and computers). Replaced it for Philips DVD732, which works fine. In the shop, they agreed with me that I'm not the only one who returned this Panasonic player.

Please, does someone have any ideas why this is happening ??

Thank you !!!!

Plays VCD, SVCD, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW that I've tried. Also has Zoom which is selectable manually or auto mode to get rid of the letterbox format for those who like to watch letterbox moveies full screen on 4:3 screen. Disc resume feature is good and remembers up to 5 discs. That way you can even eject the disc and it will remember the point where you left off. However, you have to manually make a bookmark for it to resume unlike Sony where you can just eject or stop and it will pick up where it left off. Guess its user preference but end result is the same. I'd never buy a DVD player without this feature. Also has S-video out unlike the S25. Not as thin as the Sony but thin enough. Good player all in all.
