For its time, it was an ok DVD player (condsidering I think I payed $450 for it).
I gave it to my dad about a year ago and recently he reported that the DVD+R (bitsetting to DVD-ROM) play fine for the first 2/3's for the disc but then it cant play the rest.
What problem would this be? Can you email me sammie@picknowl.com.au if you know the solution or reason? |

| This was a great player for its day. I've had it for aboot >5 years, it played most everything I threw at it (vcd, dvd-+R, dvd+r dl. The only thing its turnded down was a batch of cheapo dvd+Rs and a batch of dvd+r DLs. |

| Hmm having been to this site for awhile looking for a new player to replace my upscale Sony DVD player bc it only upscales though hdmi (sony sucks). Anyhow this was the very first player I got. At first it worked fine and I was please then I got the that damn H20 error. At forst it wouldnt happen alot but after a year I was like WTF. So I came here to find answers at that time there was like 40 complaints and as you see its only gotten worst. I actually opened the thing up to see what was happening and I could see the disc driver was kinda half way spinning so i kinda helped it along and it worked better for another year or so. Then it started acting up again so and the previous mention didnt work. by this time I was comfortable building a computer so i took the drive apart and cleaned the lens. All was good till finally it died a horrible death this october. You can actually tell with the drive will fail to read a disc because the dvd-video background will flicker like hell. Apparently theres a class action lawsuit againt Pansonic parent company regard they 1st,2nd, and 3rd generation player do to malfunctions. after reading the article underneath me it dawned on me that it was most likely a calibration problem. Anyhow if you have this player sell it if you plan on buying it dont. Avoid Pansonic like the plaugue. |

| I have had this player for over 4 years and it has played everything that has been put in it. I used to work for a video rental store and I brought home a lot of movies, some of which shouldn't have worked at all, but to my surprise it has never skipped. It plays those disks that others will not. However I just had my first disk that it wouldn't play. Fujifilm 8X colored DVD+R disks for data and video do not work at all. I tried 4 disks in all and recorded them w/ different means every time w/ the same result. Stay away from FUJIFILM disks. |

Thanks a lot for the detailed information Trossin. I had the exact same problems with my DVD+RWs (burnt by Nero on a HP 100i drive). It would take quite a few offs/ons, ejects to read the disks. I followed your instructions and formatted the disks with NeroCD-DVD speed (full format) and lo and behold, the disks were read at the first attempt..

I've had this player for about 3 years and it has been great once a disk is recognized. I've had 3 episodes of the "NO PLAY" message.
The first one I found about a year and half ago. If you turn on the power to the unit using the Open button instead of the power button it will not recognize a DVD+R until you put a DVD+RW or a commercial DVD into the player or just turn it off and turn it back on with the power button. The solution is to never turn on the player with the open button.
The second one I found about a month ago. All of a sudden most of my DVD+RW disks that I just recorded that I've had for months would take 8 to 10 tries to load in the player. I had been doing quick formats on the disks before recording them. The solution to this problem was to do a full format on these disks. Now they always play on the first try.
The last problem that I found was with Imation 8x media. I have an HP200i (2.4x record speed) recorder and record at 2.4x speed. I updated the firmware to support the 4x media but have not updated lately. One in four disks recorded take many tries to load. If I put one in that does load every time, then a problem disk will load every time. I just bought two stacks of 25 disk ($8 each at Target). These will be my last 8x I ever purchase for this player.
I want to keep this player until hard disk enhanced set top box DVD recorders drop below $250. I will try the cleaning suggestion tonight to see if my problem disks magically load. My buddy at work has a very old Panasonic player that will not load any 8x DVD+R. At least the RV-31 can load some. |

| FIrst, I want to start by saying I have owned this player since June of 2001. If you do not clean RV31 often (dust it and around it, clean tray,etc, etc), it will load disks slow or simply won't do anything. I know, pointing out the odvious on that one. Anyways, I use a Lite On DVD+-RW and DVDShrink 3.2 (program) to burn(RIP) what ever. Off-brands or cheap DVD(+R, -R, +RW, or -RW) suck. Stick to memorex, tdk, & phillips brands (NAME BRANDS, hint, hint) they tend to last the longest and play the best. The "off" brands would work for a few months (sometimes more), but would eventually stop playing. I will say it again, CHEAP DISKS DO NOT WORK WELL!!! |

This is a great unit since it plays alot of DVD+- media. It will play them with scratches (lot), sometimes with bad spots and with dirt. Compared to the new ones like the Philips 642/37 or the JVC XV-N312S it kicks ass since it is not as picky with the disk condition. I have kids and they destroy recorded media and the newer players are way too sensitive.
Not great with MP3s, has problems with different VBR and other MP3 encodings, but plays most of them.
Got the H02 error almost 3yrs after buying this and am getting Panasonic to see if they will repair it for me since I did bring it in in the first year complaining about exessive motor vibrations/noise. I think the motor needs to be replaced since it sometimes does not spin up, spin up fast enough so that the laser can read the disk.
Praying to get it back soon! |

| I tried several times to burn a VCD that would play on this RV-31. No luck. Maybe it's my media, but the same disk that wouldn't play on the RV-31 plays in 3 other machines just fine. DVD-R works fine. |

Hello all, I just bought a SONY U18A DVD burner and some Pine 4x DVD-R media, i backed up a dvd and the first five minutes of the movie was plagued with frequent hiccups (video pixelation and audio blips),after that, playback was fine, I tried using Nero 6 and DVD Author 1.5 as burning tools, and both resulted in the hiccups, could anyone suggest a better brand of dvdr media to use, I am going to try dvd+r tonight and see how things go. Anyone else have similar problems with this type of burner?

Will not reliably read a DVD+R if the unit is turned on using the tray open button. If the power is turned on with the power button then the tray is opened to insert a disk, it will play a DVD+R every time.
It seems that a calibration or extra reset is skipped if the unit is turned on with the tray open button. I know of another person who has seen this effect on a Panasonic DVD player. Easy work around but drove me nuts for a few weeks after I found out that I could "save time" by turning it on with the tray open button. |

*DANGER!* This machine is the biggest lemon I've ever owned! I bought it new a couple of years back. My first machine locked up on me after a couple of days, so I took i back and replaced it. The second machine worked fine for about 1yr then locked up on me (after the warrenty of course). I sent it out to have the techs look at it they, $100 later they sent it back as fixed. First DVD I played locked up same as before!! Should have saved my money and just thrown the damn thing in the garbage. I still have it so I figured I give a report. I keep it around to play my VCDs (which for some reason won't lock up the player like DVDs...). I figure its got a laser fault of some type.
Plays VCDs fine, but there's no screen adjustment feature so subtitles are cut-off sometimes.
Plays CD-Rs fine.
Doesn't play CD-RWs.
The only burned DVD I tryed was one from a stand-alone burner, don't know what format they use. It play that one.

| Tried (unsuccessfully) to play all 4 formats (+/-RW and +/-R DVD's). Used memorex and burned them with Plextor 708 using Pinnacle studio ver.8 with Roxio DVD creator. I get a "no play" message on the rv31. Tried opening/closing the tray, turning on/off several times as others have mentioned, but still no luck. Any suggestions? |

I have had this dvd player for about 2 years now.
For the money, it was a pretty nice player, despite the fact that I can't play SVCD's (w/o the header trick) and PAL encoded DVD's.
However, as of today, my player bit the dust. For the last 3 months or so, I've been having nothing but problems getting DVD+R's to read. Sometimes they would load right away, other times I would have to open/close the tray for up to 5 minutes before it would finally read them. But I had no problem with pressed DVD's, and almost no problem with vcd's.
But today it died, and won't play any form of media. I'm guessing the problem is with it's laser, but I've decided to just buy a better player. |

I managed to play svcd. I don't know if this is considered a header trick but here's what i did.
I had an avi file that i converted to svcd with dvd2svcd. I opened the mpg file in vcdgear and saved it as a .bin vcd and burned it with alcohol 120% and it worked. |

I really liked this player when it was new. I bought it a year and a half ago for $160. Up until about 2 months ago it would play DVD+Rs just fine. Then I noticed that sometimes DVD+Rs would result in "NO PLAY" messages (it could not read the disk). I would open then close the drive try and the 2nd read would work and the disk would play fine. Audio CDs, studio DVDs and DVD+RW always load very fast.
Lately every DVD+R (even ones that used to load fine) will result in "NO PLAY" messages and require 2 to 4 open/close cycles to get the disk to be read correctly. Once it is recognized as DVD it plays nearly fine. DVD+RW still play instantly as well as all other disks. I have even noticed that once a DVD+R has been recognized and the power is left on, any other or the same disk put in the play plays the first try.
Also, if I put a studio DVD in the machine after power up, the machine will read a DVD+R on the first try.
I also have noticed that the player is less tolerant of scratches and on some DVD+R disks will pixelate for a few frames. If I back up and replay the section it plays perfectly.
Do I need to clean the lense ($20 magic disk) or go buy a $29 replacement DVD player? |

I have just tried a TDK 4x DVD+r disc. I burned it with NERO. My player seemed to have no problem playing the disc. I used dvdshrink and Nero to get a perfect playing copy. I used the re-author funciton in dvdshrink.
I have only tried this one dvd+r disc and cd-r's with mp3's on them. So far I've had good luck with the player.
Oh, I used a TDK 840g (Plextor 708 rebadge) to burn the disc at 4x. |

| every media i 've tried so far (+/-, princo, philips, emtec, MAM, ritek, primedisc, benq)worked fine as long as they were written in 4x. Some dvd+r's that were written in 8X seemed to work but after 30 min in the movie they had problems and the image was all "pixelated". Same discs worked on my friends no-name dvd player just fine |

| Imation DVD+RW 2.4 10 pk (Best Buy) - burned DVD on Sony 510A using Ulead DVD moviefactory 2 and bundled Sonic mydvd. Worked great! Player had no problem recognizing DVD. |

I have successfully burn mostly DVD+R's (a few -R's), yet this DVD player has let me down multiple times, and my lowly Playstation 2 proves to be a better player than the Panasonic.
Recnetly I pruchased some Philips DVD+R's, and the burnt discs will play on my sisters DVD player (a GE model) but not mine. Final conclusion: stay away from this player (I won't be buying anything Panasonic now). |
