| Used this player for years. Solid unit. New to DVD writing so followed prior advice. TDK DVD-R ($20 for 50 8X on a BestBuy special)works flawlessly even compressed 47%. Using Decrypter, Rebuilder with CCE Basic on a Pioneer 108 using Nero. You folks are the best for novice starters! Can now save those 40 or 50 DVDs that get used so much. Thank you - everyone. |

Any how bought this many years ago. Just recently have been able to get various types ov VCD working on my sony. CD-RW who knew. You guys rock thanks so much.
So went up stairs tested CD-RW650 Sony brand VCD no go. Turns up no disc.
Have tried CD-Rs in teh past always with no luck but have been burning program more info later to come. |

It plays a wide variety of dvd media like

It played all these perfect even with high compresion DVD,s.Used NERO6 for burnning.
Does not play DVD+RW ,no matter what brand you try.It is an excellent player.Ihave it for three years now .I hope it will last since there is no more quality players left unless you pay a lot.
Highly recomended if you find one grab it.

I've owned this player for a couple of years now and it pretty much sucks. It had to go in for warranty service after only a couple of months because it would play about 45 min of a DVD movie and start skipping. Turned out it had a bad laser assembly (not cheap to fix).
Also, it has failed to play any VCDs or SVCDs recorded to CD-R. Only CD-RW works. It also failed to play a DVD home movie burned to a Verbatim DVD-R 4x DataLifePlus disc. The same DVD worked when burned to Verbatim DVD-RW 2x and Memorex DVD+R 4x media using Pioneer DVR-A06U. |

| DVD playback is fine, but if you're looking for something that will play your homemade VCDs, I'd look elsewhere as this player is extremely finicky when it comes to (S)VCD formats. For one thing, it will only read CD-RWs and even then, only certain brands. Memorex is a no-go, but Sony, Maxell and Verbatim work with mixed results. Sometimes playback is fine, other times you get constant freeze-ups and block distortion. I've tested literally hundreds of disks, burn methods and software and have yet to find anything truly reliable. A mediocre player at best. |

| I just dug up a spindle of old CompUSA brand 4x 74 min cdrw's and decided to give it a go in my rv30, and lo and behold they work 100% perfectly!! According to cdrdiag the cdrws are made by CMC Magnetics. Hope this helps. |

Tested the DVD player with Princo 1x DVD-Rs - the cheap-Os from allmediaoutlet.com :). The Princo DVD-Rs played smoothly, haven't had single problems yet (2 tested).
Now the DVD-RWs:
Memorex DVD-RWs (General Ver. 1.1) do NOT work with the DVD player at all. The real manufacturer seems to be Ritek though (Manufacturer ID reported by DVD Decrypter), so I would avoid Ritek DVD-RWs as well. Ejecting and closing won't help, after a short struggle you will get the "No Disk" message.
Princo DVD-RWs (bought them for Leda from shop4tech.net , but got Princo DVD-RWs) work flawlessly with the RV30. They are cheap too!($1.19 from shop4tech.net if u buy 1 packs).
Overall, the DVD-RV30 seems like a nice player, apparently it is not very DVD-RW friendly, but at least I returned the Memorex DVD-RWs to Office Depot, hehehe. Somebody's gotta be the first to get burned anyways...
The only thing I need now is cheap, compatible 2x DVD-R media. I got a Toshiba SD-R5002 DVD-RW drive if anybody cares, and use Nero and DVD Decrypter to burn.
If anybody knows a place (web site most likely), to get cheap 2x DVD-Rs compatible with the RV30, an e-mail would be much appreciated. |

| It plays TDK DVD-R's so perfectly, I didn't even realize it "does not support DVD-R format" until I read the manual. The only problem I've ever had was with about 2-1/2 minutes of an 8 hour DVD-R production of an event I ordered from a video company and I couldn't tell what brand they used. It may have been simply a defect in that particular disc. |

Found this list AFTER trying a number of CDRs.
None of them worked.
As soon as I saw the list here, I headed over to Staples and got a 5 pack of the Memorex 700Mb CDRWs and a ten pack of the Staples branded 650Mb CDRWs.
My first test Memorex at 2X came back with "No Disk". 15 open and closes did nothing for me.
My first test Staples at 2X worked fine....except for the fact that something went wrong when I encoded an AVI to an MPG with TMPGEnc. Apparently, I lost the sound entirely. I noticed it when I ran the converted MPG to no sound, but I guess I was just hopeful that burning it would correct it :-)
Now I'm letting Nero convert the file itself before it burns. I'm confident that it will work.
