Replaced my dying Sony with this player in December of 2002. Works excellently -- has handled every DVD-R and DVD-RW burn I've thrown at it with ease. MP3 interface could be a little faster, but works well in that area too.

You can't beat the superior decoder in the RP82 -- No chroma bug, excellent playback. It is a perfect complement to my Sony Wega TV, and I'm not even using HD/Progressive Scan.

I had originally thought the RP 82 was "RePutable"....NOT!

This CD player is just another one in the game, plays VCD/SVCD well, but just gets finicky about DVD-R,RW, - or + versions.

I dont understand this..

I burned a DVD-R off of an ISO, and it works.
I burned the VIDEO_TS files of a DVD with Nero 6.3 and it REFUSES TO PLAY. Both on the same media. Anyone have a clue?

Both on the same media. This is crazy!! What a waste of money. People just go to your local WalMart and buy the Apex DVD player. All these "higher" end players are just trash.

I burned 4.4 GB of MP3 straighforward to a Maxell DVD+R... and upon inserting the disc in the player, it displayed a message on the TV screen, indicating "This type of disc is not supported"...

The same DVD+R plays perfectly fine in a three times cheaper Norcent DP-311 player - which I use for watching R2 DVDs

So much for the famed ultra-compatibility of the "++ format...

Excellent player and exactly 1 year later I got the dreaded H02 error message and nearly fainted thinking it would never happen to me. Anyhow, I was upset and thought of opening and checking it myself. I put a DVD in and pressed close, the disc loaded but didnt spin (H02 - motor broken) I turned the DVD manually a little and it started spinning again and has been working since. My suggestion to all give this a shot it might work, but dont know for how long...

I have a big problem with the RP-82.

I didn't subject it to unreasonable wear and tear (I didn't even use it every day!) and it crapped out on me after 7 months of use. I got the dreaded "H02" error.

Avoid this player.

Played everything I tried so far. Great quality DVD player. Progressive scan output. DVD-AUDIO output. No chroma bug error. Does not look all digital like alot of other dvd players like Sony. It has a great chipset in it. Its fast when navigating menus.

Two things I dont like----
I don't like the fact that such a good player still has the layer change pause, while the laser refocuses on the second layer of a DVD. Can't have everything in a low cost solution.

I dont like the remote, has to small of buttons.

VCD - I used TDK-CDRW - recorded using nero Playback was No Problem.

SVCD - I used TDK-CDRW recorded using nero at 8X=Playback No Problem.

MP3 - used CDRW and Generic CDR at constant BR of 320 then recorded at Variable BR - playback was no problem.

WMA - used CDRW and Generic CDR at constant br then recorded at Variable BR - playback was no problem.

DVD-R - Recorded a home movie using studio 8 and Memorex brand DVD. No Problem.

DVD-R - Recorded a home movie using studio 8 and hotan brand DVD which I consider no brand. Played No Problem.

DVD+R - Recorded a home movie using studio 8 and HP
brand DVD. No Problem.

DVD+R - Recorded a home movie using studio 8 and Verbatim brand DVD. No Problem.

DVD+RW & DVD-RW - Recorded a home movie using studio 8 and Memorex & HP RW brand DVD. No Problem.

Not sure if the RP82 is able to play MP3 and WMA at higher bitrate then 320. I just find that it's just overkill to go beyond that. Sounds great as my originals and full title is a Plus Plus.

Also able to play Audio DVD but I have none too test, unless there is a program for me to burn my own then i'll try.

After purchasing so many dvd players (3 pioneers, 1 sony, 1 samsung 721, and 2 panasonic)then handing off the ones i did not care for as gifts and presents. I think I found a winner. I will be holding on to this one for a very long time. Besides my pocket is gettting weak. I am totally happy with this one. I give it a 10. I just wish the remote was better laid out. P.S. we need some hacks for this one.

Superb picture quality, Episode II anamorphic looks like HD on my tweaked Sony 61HS10 - picture quality does compare to HD sources from my hi-def DTC100. We all know it plays MP3s and VCDs, but I was disappointed when it didn't play my SVCDs. At least it didn't initially play my Nero made SVCDs. And looking in the manual, it states SVCDs are not supported. But then I reburned the same SVCDs with Nero, this time without a menu, and it played flawlessly! It even said SVCD on startup. Very happy with this player. My only other wish is that it could scale non-anamorphic widescreens like the RP91, and play DIVX encoded movies. But then there are very few if non existent players that do that also.

Comments:
I took a chance on this one that it would play SVCD's, and thankfully it plays them great! I can fast forward chapters and inside tracks, without losing audio synch. When a SVCD is inserted, the on-screen menu even says "SVCD", even though the manual says that SVCD's aren't supported. I haven't tested a XVCD yet. VCD's work as well, including a JPEG VCD I made with NERO.

The progressive scan output looks great as well, thanks to the Sage/Faroudja chip. I use the 16:9 mode on my Sony Wega 36" HDTV screen.

The menu system is very nice, with folder directory structure displayed, making for easy MP3 navigation. The long file name support is good, but ID3 tag support would have been better. WMA is supported, but I don't really use the format.

The unit supports DVD-A, but I doubt I will utilize that feature anytime soon.

Overall, this unit is around $80 more than the Philips 724 (which is a great all-around player), which I used for a while. The 724 doesn't have the same quality Faroudja chip that the Panasonic RP-82 has, but costs much less with comparable features.

Great performance to price ratio. Reported to have the MPEG decoder of the RP-91 with the Faroudja progressive chipset. No Chroma Bug! My only complaints so far are cheap remote and light weight construction - but at this price point Panasonic went with superior chip sets in favor of build quality. The only performance issue is it has poorer defect tracking (ie., if the disc is dirty/smudges on it) than my previous DVD player. Overall - great player for the price!
