Recently purchased an NEC 3550A dvd burner and decided to burn some movies.
I only tested DVD-Video files using Nero6 or DVDR .img files using ImgBurn or Nero6
The following brands of DVD's worked for me.
Sony DVD-RW 1X-2X
Maxell DVD-R 8X -
TDK DVD-R 16X (bought at Costco)

I used max speeds on all discs, the player had no problem playing them back.
It didn't like chapters when I converted Divx files to DVD-V using VSO so I disabled that feature.

I had reviewed this player before and made an error.
The Black and Silver models can both have Faroudja chipsets.
However the A series (an A in the Seriel number) has Faroudja and the B series does not. I learned this from several posters on AVSFORUM. Now - I am assuming this is correct information. But, if there is better info I'd be glad to know it.
I very much like this player. It have done an excellent job. When it dies (The RP-62 has a rumored "spindle" problem and can be short-lived) I will have to spend a good deal more to find a replacement. This one was an instore Demo at CC and I paid $50 for it in June of '03. It has approximately 1500 hours on it.

SUPERB DVD PLAYER...

NOW HARD TO FIND (try eBay)! Price about >100$.

Both players BLACK & SILVER are equipped with Faroudja
De-interlacer (FLI2200 “The BEST out there”). Just paint is Different.Black for sure(I open it), Silver-don't know.

Only (9) - No Coaxial digital output…

Excellent player for picture quality. Players costing many times as much do not compare to this player's progressive scan picture.

I have tried the following DVD write-able media(all burned with the NEC 2510A burner):

DVD-R, Ritek brand(4X): plays flawlessly
DVD+R, TDK brand(4X): plays flawlessly
DVD+R, Fujitsu brand(4X): will not play!

TDK +R's work just fine despite the fact that the player is not supposed to play the +R format. The only other brand I tried does not work. Best advice is to stick with -R for maximum compatibility.

I have played 5 backed up films burned onto DVD-R made by TDK without a problem. The images look excellent. No glitches or problems at all. RW+R made by verbatim plays back 3 out of 4 tried so far.

The Progressive portion of this DVD player is really impressive. It has a Faroudja based deinterlacer and the combination of this player and our Infocus X1 DLP PJ produces a beautiful image. I highly recommend this DVD player. BTW, the S (Silver) model has the Faroudja chip. The K (black) model doesn't.

Great player for pressed movies..really good picture on S-vid. Very stable. Doesn't do to well with burned media. Only does dvd-r and -rw, and apparently only a few media types. Memorex doesnt work. So far, only TDK media works.

No luck with my LITE-ON LDW-411S Burner using Maxell DVD-R discs. These damn things play fine on the Bose, fine one the Cyberhome piece of crap -- but not on the Panny RP62.

Love the pro-scan and DCDi decoder... But can't believe it wont play my DVD-Rs!!!

Great player, had it for about a year and a half now. Just burnt a Memorex DVD R- tonight with my Liteon 811S I just got and it played it with no problems. DVD RW+ didn't do anything in the player after it tried to read it for awhile. Nice picture quality, quite a few tweaking options, thumbs up!

Burned TDK DVD-R and Memorex DVD-RW at 2x speed with LG GSA-4040B drive and NeoDVD 5Plus and Ulead DVD Movie Factory. Works great although the NeoDVD software is not very stable. The drive is fine but the bundle is mediocre. Ulead's DVD program works much better, so far.

Tried SVCD without luck. Tried VCD and that was fine. Now that I can do DVDs I don't care about VCD anymore though.

A great value DVD player that is no longer in production. One of the more highly rated players in the HometheaterHifi progressive scan DVD player shootouts, I was initially discouraged, as I could not get any backed up DVDs to work with this player. However, I tried replacing my DVD writer (a Micro Advantage Superdrive) with a TDK indidvd multi-format drive, and that was all it took. I have backed up a dozen or so DVD-Rs to date, with NO coasters. I have seen zero problems with any of my backups. And, I perform the entire process with freeware: DVDDecrypter for ripping, DVDShrink for re-authoring, IMGTool for creating an .iso image, and DVDDecrypter for burning the .iso image. Awesome!

Picture quality with S-Video output is excellent. Can't wait to get big screen TV and use Progressive Scan. Bought this on closeout 6 months ago at BJ's for $79. Won't work with DVD-R TDK burnt discs but will with DVD-R Imation. I use a TDK440N with DVD X Copy Gold and Nero 6 Demo for UDF writing.

This used to be my main DVD player but ive now replaced it with the Panasonic S35. This has been a great DVD player with awesome picture quality. Very limited format playback and as I am now getting into SCVD and JPEG discs, this player is being moved to the bedroom. I havent gotten my 51" Sony HDTV yet so I cant comment on the progressive scanning quality but a great overall player. The only other problem besides limited playback formats is it wont playback MP3 recored at higher bitrates, they skip and stutter.

Slim profile, well-built machine. (I have the RP62K which is the black model.) It plays commercial DVDs beautifully. Also plays DVD-Rs (Imation, Memorex, Maxell, and TDK) fine which have been authored in SpruceUp or DVDit! PE and burned using RecordNow Max on Pioneer A04.

Also use it to test movies with DVD-RWs with no problems (using "full", not "quick" erase before burning).

Have no problem playing VCDs (Imation, Memorex) encoded to spec. using TMPegPlus or Nero. Don't use SVCDs so haven't bothered testing. Same for MP3s (that's what the Jukebox is for ;-)!

A big improvement over my earlier Panasonic for watching commercial DVD's. I have tried playing HP
DVD +RW, but no go. If I copy a +RW onto a +R it will play o.k. I do not understand as I thought the only difference was simply that one could be written over and the other could not.

Got the Player because of it's size/looks as well as stated features such as WMA, MP3, DVD-R and progressive scan playback. DVD-R's recorded off of my Sony DRU500AX work great, however would not play any other type of DVD-Recordable format. Picture quality, especially is progressive-scan mode is superb. VCD's work fine as well as MP3's and WMA files.

For the price it is a good player and works as advertised.

Got the RP62 to compare to a new RCA DRC350N. The RP62 handles video based DVD's much better than the RCA. Monsters Inc and Movie concerts played smoothly with less jitter. Ib film based material both were good with the RP62 a slight edge in PQ.

The RP62 was not as good playing back most of my DVD-R
as the RCA. One movie was pixelated and skipped in the RP62 played perfectly in the RCA.

Also SVCD audio was perfect in RCA but skipped in the panasonic. Also I could not get my menu from my SVCD in the panasonic but the RCA would show me my SVCD menu that I had prepared with Nero.

Remote control on Panasonic is terrible. RCA's looks dinky but the buttons arfe easier to press and easier to identify thqan the all black panasonic remote with ultra tiny buttons and inscriptions.

Panny is good for store bought dvd and is excellent with video or improperly flagged dvd's. Thanks to Sage SLi2200 de-interlacer.

But it's going back to the store becuase the point of me buying a new dvd player was to have perfect playback of my DVD-R that my old toshiba sd2800 also has problems with.

Amazing picture quality although not neccesarily better than my rp-56.

This player WILL NOT play minidvd or ISO mpeg CD's as is listed above.

It's the reason I bought it and the reason I'm returning it.

If I didn't have the RP56 I'd keep it. It's a great player. The reason I bought it to have the same PQ as the rp56 w/ miniDVD and ISO CD support. Didn't work out.
