I've had this player for 2 years or more. It plays DVD-Rs quite well. You have to change the bitsetting of DVD+Rs to dvd-rom for them to work. I've also had to reduce the burn speed of my 3540a to 8x after some discs not playing. I use Verbatim 16x DVD+Rs (mc004) and they work great.

I got this DVD player Dec. 2001 and I'm very happy with it.
I'm using it with a NEC240 DLP front projector and get superb picture.
Reads with absolutely no problems DVD+/-R and DVD+RWs. Used Fuji, Memorex, Maxell and TDK (Radioshack, Bestbuy) media. Burned with the LG 4X multi-standard burner.
Plays mp3s, but no on-screen display for that.

If you're using an HDTV set or a projector, make sure (!!!) that your display device is set to 'widescreen' aspectratio and the DVD player is set to 16:9 (not letterboxed). The picture would look 'skinny' on a regular TV, but on an HTDV set will show with the proper aspect ratio.

I'll second the sketchy dvd-r compatibility that a user reported a while back. I've tried 2 different brands, one being princo and the other one generic. I get errors towards the end of the movie (pixelation and audio skipping) I've used the same media on xbox and newer generation panasonic players with no problems. video quality is excellent, no chroma bug and very good progressive performance.

The chipset in this player is the same chip set used in many high end players of it's time. For progressive scan players in the $150 price range, it tops the list. Watch burnded DVD-R,DVD+R on it almost everyday with a wide variety of media. The SVCD issue is a non-issue. DVD burners are going to be cheap in the next year. I would recommend this player to anyone. I own 2.

I bought this player at the time because it offered progressive scan at a very reasonbable price in a brand-name product.

CD-DA recorded on Princo Budget CD-R (48x); disc burned using nero 6 (from mp3 files)
VCD recorded on Fujifilm CD-R; disk image came from newsgroup; burned with nero 5.5
MP3 recorded on Maxell CD-RW high-speed (12x); disc burned with using Windows XP. (The DVD player userguide makes no mention of mp3 support!)

DVD doesn't read CD-R with folders of JPEG images created with Windows XP.

Plays standard speed DVD+R and +RW by Memorex and Fuji, burned with a Sony DRU-120A at 2.4x using B's Recorder Gold and DVD Complete. No bitsetting done, or even possible with this burner yet.

Would not play MP3s with sample rates above 24k, at any bitrate without skipping - until I tried encoding with joint-stereo instead of standard stereo. Now plays files with sample rates tested from 22 to 48k, and bitrates tested from 96 to 320k no problem. Very fast MP3 track switching. No onscreen display, just shows track number and elapsed time on display. Will play files in folders, but all tracks on disk are played in one tracklist. Plays multisessions.

Would not play MP3s off a DVD+RW.

This standalone player is rather special. Although it doesn't support SVCDs, it looks at the MPEG stream to figure out how to play it. In other words, it *does* support MPEG-2 streams placed on a VCD disk. I called this mVCD for mutant VCD :) (more on this below). When I tried an SVCD (i used Nero to make one), it actually attempted to play it, but refused to show the SVCD's menu. The video itself was jerky, but that seems to be related to the VBV buffers of the SVCD video (and perhaps a few other things).

Maybe a firmware upgrade could enable SVCD support.

Anyhoo, to try out the mVCD thing, use TMPGEnc to generate an MPEG-2 file but make sure you do *not* use the SVCD version. Ensure that the bitrate does not go above 2500 and make sure that the VBV buffers are set to no more than 40 (I did get it to work at slightly higher values, but not consistantly).

Once the file is created, I use Nero to burn a non-compliant VCD with the MPEG-2 file, and voila! an mVCD.

Now obviously this won't be supported by too many DVD players out there but hey, it's a kind of workaround to the lack of SVCD support.

Okay, this is for everyone looking for help with sVCDs.

As previously mentioned, this player can play sVCDs using the multiplexing trick. The multiplexing trick is done with TMPGencoder, which can be found at the following web address:

http://www.tmpgenc.net/

Within the program, select MPEG Tools under the file menu. Under the multiplex tab:

1. Add your sVCD file
2. Select MPEG-1 Video CD Type
3. Name the output
4. Press Run

Ignore the buffer underflow message you may receive when the multiplexing is complete. I have never had a problem.

Using the wizard in Nero, burn a VideoCD as normal. When the multiplexed sVCD file is finished loading a warning will appear, press "Turn Off Standard Compliance". Now burn the CD.

Now for the green...pixelation[?]...flashing and cutting off the bottom portion of the screen. The problem is the video standard. There are two types: PAL & NTCS. PAL is a European standard, and unfortunately this player does not support it properly. Using TMPGencoder, you need to re-encode the file into an NTSC standard sVCD, then multiplex as normal.

Hope this helps.

I give this player an 8. It's clearly the best DVD player I've ever owned, hands down. The video quality in progressive mode is simply incredible. The only flaws I have with it are the following:

1. Sketchy DVD-R compatibility - I've found that discs I've burned at 1X speed play better than those recorded at 2X. I will occaisionally get some video and audio errors when playing a full length DVD-R. Be warned! I've used Verbatims and Apple discs at 2x. 1X seems to work better.

2. Lack of SVCD compatibility.

Media; used/tested with:
TDK CD-R 80min 32x
TDK CD-RW 74min 10x
Tools:
DVDx 1.6 to back up DVDs to MPEG1; Nero to burn the MPEG to VCD or XVCD.
VCD standard playback excelent.
XVCD playback excelent.
SVCD serious breaking - obviusly not supported
XSVCD - have not tried.
Have not tried even the "MPEG2 mux to MPEG1 and save as VCD trick".
Have not tried Menues etc.

DVDs - perfect; by the way, I have played successfully some "bad software" or "scratched" (a few bad scenes) DVDs that would not play through on other relativley expensive DVD players.

Ok, some verbal info. This is an amazing player in terms of regular DVDs. Perfect Progressive Scan. I play it on a 65" rear projection tv with an 1080 lines input.
Tried many others including Sony and Samsung DVD players on the same TV. This (Pan RP56) is the best. Smoothest picture I have seen. Good menues, good remote.
Bought for $230 at C.City a year and a half ago but now definetly much cheaper.

When I started being interested in VCD and SVCD back-up of DVDs I was very disapointed to see it plays VCDs and not SVCDs. Then I looked in the postings here and found out about the SVCD header mod and the XVCD limits.

I am too new in this to try yet with the SVCD MPEG2 mux-ing. But XVCD at 720x480 x 29.97Hz x 2500VID x 224AUD plays smooth. I have not put effort to compare the qulity of this to a regular SVCD or XSVCD but (I will need to do this on a different player of course) but this particular XVCD was way, way better than the standard VCD that I burned initially. And for my DVD back-up needs - ideal. I was just about to buy a SVCD compat. second player but this plan will wait for now. The Panasoninc will remain on duty.
I hope the guys that were posting here and showed to be as confused as me about the header mod for MPEG2 to VCD will like the XVCD solution and the quality they can get.
Rating for quality, build and how it handles some very strange and buggy straight DVDs I would put 10. But this is still a one-region, NTSC-only, makrovisson-on player so 8 will be ok.
BadVlad

Like others here, I also get some green stuff on some of my SVCD playback experiences using the infamous TMPEnc+Nero trick posted here. I know the trick works for some SVCDs as I can get some of the MPEG2 files to work. There seems to be a variant of MPEG2 files that give this player problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Just got DVD writer and using MovieFactory and $.80 DVD-R media and it works great. Prior to the new drive I was using VCD abd that also worked without a problem.

I would give this player a 10 if I didnt have to hack the header of the SVCD files to make them playable. Without that issue this player is certainly the best box I've seen and used though. The video quality is superb even without using progressive mode. Changing SVCD headers into MPEG-1 headers does in fact work using TMPEG. I've also tested all of Kwag's KVCD templates and they work marvelous with amazing picture quality. Definitely a nice player worth owning if your picture quality freak like myself.

Ok for all those who want to know for certain.
I tested media given to me by HP at PC EXPO on this player. I don't know what bitrate it is running.

However -- DVD +R and +RW definatly work.

I recently read an article saying that some media matters and there is differences in the actual media. SEE DV magazine July 2002. or go to www.dv.com

VCD's work too, that goes without saying. MP3 work also.

If your doing a report you should include media type used.

Comments:
i have tried the tmpgenc trick to remultiplex an svcd into a vcd and the player is still messing up with the green stuf in the movie. the files were originally in the bin/cue format and i converted them using vcdgear. then i burned it using nero with standard compliant cd turned off. is there anything im doing wrong. signal_4@hotmail.com
