This is pound for pound the best DVD/CD changer on the market for the money ($125). It has played any and all single layer burned DVD's I've thrown at it. I tried 2/DL burned DVD's from the same manufacturer with no success. The menus will show and when you try to start the main feature the unit locks up after it tries to read the disc after a few tries. So I would say if your set on DL capability I don't know if this player will ever play DL DVDs unless the DL manufacturig process allows for it later on. The remote is weak, and it does take a little extra time to change discs in the carousel. Those are the only negative things I can say about the machine. It has gotten a top rating with consumer reports for 5 disc changers. It is a very sleak machine and over all I'm totally satisfied with it.

Great DVD/CD/MP3 player and changer. I love it.

Gripes:

Havent been able to get it to play SVCDs, but now I have a dvd burner so its no big deal.

It reads mp3 cds very slowly.

Weak and poorly designed remote.

Good:

Everything it does, it does really well, just not very fast.

I would buy it again.

Definitely!

I'd like to report that this player can play a DVD on DVD-RAM media, recorded with LG GSA-4081B.

Main reason for buying this was to replace a 5-disk CD changer. I'm disappointed by the time it takes to read CDs, and you can't press play until it has read the CD (can't close the door, press play and walk away; you have to wait)

Seems to play anything that I have thrown at it thus far. Only problem is that I replaced a broken APEX player with this one. The apex would play SVCD burned at 12x, but this player needs them to be burned at 4x. Otherwise the video stutters during playback.

No front panel cursor control.

Didn't play unauthored DVD-R(W) discs (two brands) with VCD-formatted MPEG files burned on them.

Slow disc loading (ie, it took several seconds to bring up the first FBI warning or whathaveyou).

Had trouble with some of my K-Hypermedia brand discs.

Very nice player but it does not play all of my ritek (go3) backuped movies. For every 5 movies I put in the changer only 4 actually play. I must therefore sell this unit on ebay. Two Identical rips of the same movie, using the same software may yield inconsistent results on this machine. 4 out 5 is not good enough!

Has played everything I've thrown at it other than mp3 burned on a DVD-Ram disc. Bought this one to replace an old dying APEX I used to play my burned SVCD's. It seems to do an excellent job at everything.

SVCD output was right on the money, so was my DVD's I made on MEMOREX DVD-RW. I agree with a previous poster that it does take longer than usual (about 15-20 seconds) to load -RW...but it loads everytime.

Excellent player in my opinion.

So far I've tested this player with Ritek G04 4x DVD-R media and TDK DVD-RW media. Both work, although I had to format the DVD-RW in Nero 6 Ultra as ISO/UDF with DVD-video enabled (burning simply as a DVD-video didn't work). Picture quality is FANTASTIC on an HDTV and it has a built-in Dolby Digital & DTS decoder. You also have to enable DVD-video in the setup menu of this player to get your burned dvds working.

This was by far the better buy for me than the Sony 685 5 disc changer. It so far has played every burnt audio cd I threw at it. It easily finds and lists any MP3's on a disc regardless of whether there are other file types on the CD. Most important for me, was the ability to do random play on MP3's... the panasonic does this very well whereas the sony wouldn't!. The audio from this player is excellent. yea, the remote isn't all that great. but oh well. DVD video looks very good so far. The progressive scan output looks very good, but I haven't tweaked it yet. I haven't tried any DVD-AUDIO or wma audio files yet, nor have i tried any burnt dvd's. on the burnt cd-r/rw's, i used both nero and musicmatch jukebox.

Comments:
This player is a great unit. I replaced a Panasonic DVD-A320U that could not play any of my burned DVDs. It has played everything I have tried to play. Some disks take a few seconds longer to startup because of laser switching or focusing.

I noticed that the DVD player's manual says that DVD+R and DVD+RW cannot be played, but if you read the sentence in the user manual further it is referring to ones that are inside of "disk cartridges". I think that really Panasonic has built this player to support DVD+R and DVD+RW formats they just don't want to state it directly in their documentation. The DVD format camp Panasonic stands with is the "minus" camp, but the reality is both formats are popular now so they are saving face with providing the undocumented support.

The video decoder on it is top notch. When I calibrated my TV with the Video Essentials DVD I got wonderful playback. I have tested several of my favorite movies and am very impressed with the video performance.

I have an old Onkyo TX-SV828THX receiver that does not have build in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders so I have to be dependent on a player with built in decoders. The performance of the built in decoders is excellent both with Dolby Digital and DTS. The DTS performance is slightly better than my old A320 DVD player.

The remote's IR performance is not strong compared to my Cinmia-7 all-in-one remote. If I were to use www.remotecentral.com "fluffy blanket test" it would probably not even pass one blanket layer.

I highly recommend this DVD player to anyone looking for a unit with wide range of formats and needs a built in decoder.

I've only used, so far, computer fair - no name +R & -R media. Haven't tried RW media yet, that's next.... Program used: DVDXCOPY and DVDXexpress.

I'm a newbe so please take that in consideration. 6 Copies made so far with great results on above media (2 on -R, 4 on +R which this player is not rated to read), Sony 510 burner. Player seems to work GREAT. Bought it over the sony because of ZOOM feature on the Panasonic and some poor reviews of Sony products in AudioReview. Very good reviews of F85 in the Circuit City customer reviews. I'm 2 days into my 30 days "no questions" return policy at Circuit City. So far, so good......

Remote is ok, but not great quality. However, the player works very well with my Harmon 520 universal remote under standard Panasonic code.

This player does a fine job at playing ordinary DVDs, CDs and other media. Its also one of the new units that plays DVD audio. However if you are playing backups of DVDs stay away from this player. After trying numerous discs I sadly discovered it only plays about half my discs, which I have successfully played on a Sony and a Samsung.
I knew this going in but the changer does not auto change DVDs only CDs.
Great for ordinary people. Sucks for me personally. I am going to have to resell it.

picture quality is great! HiMAT cd's play fine, flawlessly. CD-text is a nice feature, shows up on the bottom of the screen. I haven't seen if there's a screensaver yet...but i haven't played any audio cd for a good length of time. teh remote is very weak...even previous panasonic remotes were better than this one. the buttons are laid out well...it just could be a little more heavy-duty.

Plays any DVD-R/RW video I throw at it, sometimes takes a bit to load RW. Will NOT play DVD-MP3 or DVD-JPEG which is disappointing. JPEG navigation is very nice. Thumnails take awhile to load however and it won't thumbnail vertical images. Not always smart enough to load the single disc you put in. Overall I was looking for authored disc compatibility and it definitely does well.

The logos on the box include CD-R/RW, Windows Media Player and HighMAT. Look very closely and you will see that HighMAT logo only has audio and images underneath it. If you use Windows Movie Maker Version 2 to make HighMAT formatted
.wmv movie files you will not be able to play them on this player. Several months from now Panasonic will come out with players that will do .wmv. Currently only wma, mp3 and JPEG will work with HighMAT. Hope this saves you having to return your unit !

Model Panasonic DVDF85S.
I've only played DVD+R and +RW.
Burned from NEC 1100A onto Verbatum, Maxell and Primedisc media.
Player has to read disc for 8+ seconds, before it starts to play [minor issue].
I had a Sony before this one [$129] - I have to say that the picture and particularly the sound on this unit is much better.
If only panasonic had spent a couple of dollars on the remote control - I could have rated this player a 10. It's a real Mickey Mouse remote - small keys, poor layout, and hard to read.
But, I knew that before the purchase.
