I bought this DVD player on sale and I liked it because it had a 5 disc tray. Also, since I back up all my DVD's, I thought since it said supports Windows Media, that I could burn just about any format of DVD's and play on this. I use several programs to back up which are mentioned here in other reviews. All my VTS files are converted to VOB format. I've used DVD-R+R disc's and the DVD player will not play them. In addition, some DVD's that I have purchased don't even make it all the way through the progressive scan and it jams up and I have to shut it off. This DVD is old now anyway and I don't even think Panasonic even makes them anymore. I am looking for a new system.

Other than most guys here, I was successful with DVD+R DL at my very first try using Nashua media.

Besides that, I normally use DVD-R media of many brands and haven't come across any problems so far.

(I'm using a Plextor PX-716A DVD recorder)

Bought the unit because it's a 5 DVD changer, but I was disappointed at how slowly it loads and initializes DVDs; also mentioned here is that the remote controller is a piece of junk because you really need to point it precisely to the unit to work.

Good, but I expected more.
The video and sound quality are great, especially for a non-progressive DVD player.
The five-disc DVD changer is a great feature.
I've been disapointed buy the remote wich has to be very precisely oriented on the player to work.
Disk reads and disk changes are very slow.
The menues are prety complicated and not instinctive.

Pretty decent player. Have had no problems playing VCDs, CDs, or MP3s burned onto Memorex or TDK media using Nero.

Plays VCD and XVCD without issue. Will also play SVCD and XSVCD if you apply the VCD header trick. Will not play "normal" SVCD or XSVCD as picture and/or sound is jerky. If using TMPGEnc, re-multiplex using the "MPEG-1 Video-CD" type ("MPEG-1 Video-CD (non standard)" does not work for me). Have tested up to 2500Kbits with great quality. Recommend minimum of SVCD or XVCD 720x480 at 2300Kbits or better if you don't have MPEG-2 encoder.

Best quality I've tested - XSVCD 720x480, 2-pass VBR at 2500Kbits using the VCD header trick, of course. Encoded using TMPGEnc. Burned on Memorex. Difficult to see the difference between this and original DVD although the sound was not as good.

Plays MP3Pro with slight sound degredation, but worth it for twice the song capacity.

Random function works with MP3s and CDs. Random also works with CDs across multiple trays but you must select the sequential function before random. Have not tried random function with multiple tray MP3 or MP3/CD mix. Have not tried sequential with MP3 (not that you really need it if you load your CD-R to capacity).

Drawbacks:
- Disk reads and disk changes are very slow.
- Sequential function does not work with DVDs. Only works with VCD variations and CDs. This really sucks when you have a DVD movie on more than one disc.
- Sound is good but not great.

This player is junk, if u want true xvcd or xsvcd or even some of the higher quality vcds forget it. I aint performing the header trick on hundreds of disks. Get a Lenoxx 2003 if you are on a budget to get something that will play anything. A JVC xv-r85 would be my second choice as it will play a few more that a jvc xv-500 or 502 or a fa900 will not. However, those three JVC's are still better by miles and miles than any sony, toshiba, phillips, panasonic and some other off brands will not even try. After JVC blows out these models they will no longer support vcds, svcds, or in short anything but a dvd. This is the story that i got from all the manufactures. So, if u want a cool dvd player you had better get one soon or u will be sol without the paddle. You will have to order something from out of the coutry before much longer and that will be a major hassle.

MP3 files encoded in "Stero" with LAME (possibly other encoders as well) skip. I have never had an MP3 encoded using "Join Stereo" skip. If you encode with Joint Stereo you'll be ok.

Otherwise a very good player. I bought it because it doesn't take up much space considering it's a 5-disc.

Looks like everybody complains about MP3 problems. I do too. BUT it seems to me I found a cure: convert to WMA (192x44xCBR) and it plays with no hitch. I converted about 2 hundred "bad" MP3s on cheap CD-RW so far and very happy - no skips or other abnormalities. I use dBpowerAMP converter.

Contrary to what I saw on another review, I * HAVE NOT * had any success getting this player to play MP3-DVD's.

My test mp3 dvd's were burned w/ a Pioneer A04 at 2x onto TDK & Maxell DVD-R's (the two most reliable, compatible media for DVD-r) with both RecordNow Max AND Nero. Tried on both DVD-R and DVD-RW.

Anyone else with any success with mp3-dvd's? Does *ANY* 5-disc changer play mp3-dvd's?

PROS: Seems to be reliable, over all. Decent menues, etc. Have had very good luck with playing other DVD's I've made. Good price: Circuit City $140 - $30 rebate = $110 for pretty decent 5 disc changer.. not bad at all.

CONS: It is true that this DVD player (as well as other Panasonic DVD changers in this line) has a small remote with rice-size buttons. Really, it does make a difference. Also, not progressive-scan.

I've got this unit and I was surprised how crappy is for the name Panasonic.
MP3 on CD didn't play properly with Memorex media,
it plays OK with Kodak media.
It plays DVD R+, not the DVD RW (used Sony DRU-500A)
Plays VCD OK. Sound is terible on both DTS and DD 5.1
(I intended to replace my Pioneer C503)
I did return it!

DVD+WR, burned on a PC, DOES NOT WORK.

I tried burning on an HP DVD 100i using Memorex DVD+WR, but it wouldn't read in the Panasonic DVD player. Reading other reviews here, I found that people found success using either HP or Verbatim DVD+WR disks when recorded in Mode 2 on a DVD Recorder stand-alone unit, so I tried to burn a DVD+WR on my PC using a Verbatim disk.

Again, it DID NOT WORK. PC burned DVD+WR = no, at least with Memorex and Verbatim disks.

Plays XVCD very well at 2500kbit. So it's 35 minutes of film on a 700Mb CD at constant bitrate.

Can random all 5 cd for cd audio. Use option cd sequencial and random at the same time.

Doesn't play svcd at all but with xvcd at 2500kbit and chapters made with vcdeasy, can't ask for more. There is not much difference between the quality of the DVD and the XVCD with my TV 27" JVC.

Sometime with Audio CD with random mode, the player skip the end of the tracks to the next one but it's rare. Maybe he doesn't like the music...

The player is slow with the autorun when you power it up and to identify the cd.

Good quality for the DVD even with scrated one.

I recommend it for anybody that appreciate XVCD instead of SVCD.

I was looking for a svcd player, took several svcd movies burnt on different media (TDK cdr to SKC cdrw). Could not get any of them to run, the picture is crisp and clear but stutters non stop. Went home did the "header trick" http://www.vcdeasy.org/modules.php?name=_Guides&id=VcdTrick#vcdtrick and tried again. Works like a dream, it plays the svcd disc once you change its header from mpeg2 to mpeg1, the thing is that it is still actually mpeg2, the player runs fine, picture is near dvd quality. So if you don't mind the extra 5 mins it takes to perfom the header trick on the cdr you get everything you want. It runs with everything from crap princo discs up, encoded in vbr or cbr.

Note: I purchased in Australia for $320 from yardleyhospitality.com.au online, so you do not have to get ripped off by local dealers anymore (heaps cheaper and delivered to your home) In Australia the macrovision is disabled and it is mulit region chipped by panasonic.

You cannot lose

This player is nice for it's handling of the disc changing. BUT, although it doesn't play a SVCD it acts like it will!

I was unable to test this player in store before buying it. (the sales guy actually screwed up the floor model when i asked him to hook it up to a TV....) <- That was at Best Buy btw...

Anyway, After driving an hour to get back home, i throw in my SVCD test disc that seemed to play when it was on the shelf, only to find that indeed it does TRY to play it, yet, it stutters like no tomorrow and thus is unwatchable. Whoever said that this will play SVCD's is WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG!
**************************************************
IT DOES ***NOT*** PLAY SVCDS!!
**************************************************

This player sucks and it's going back to best buy. And they better take it back!

Avoid this player at all costs if yer looking for SVCD ability.

I bought this thing specifically because I read it could play SVCD but someone out there is wrong. I tried two different SVCDs ripped from two different computers with the same results. In one case the the video played like it was in slow motion fast forward and so too did the audio. In the other case the video played ok but the sound was all chopped up. I know both of these movies are ok because I can play them in my single disk player no problem.

I don't recommend this machine for SVCD at all.

Did not play any svcd I created like I wanted. Instead, I create xvcd with resolution of 780x480 and 2200 bitrate so I can store 40 minutes of video on a 700 mb recordable cd.

VCD works very well but of course, the video quality is not good. Burn only xvcd!

Some difficulties on mp3 encoded long time ago. Did not find why! New mp3 work well. Fast player when changing tracks.

I hate the autorun when you put on the player.

The cd sequential function works but takes 5-10 secondes to switch disk when read vcd. Did not test with DVD.

Good player for audio CD but random works only for a cd... no random for 5 audio cd.
Random works very well for MP3 cd.

Really good player if you do not want to play SVCD.

Very good player; played everthing I created from home movie/MPE DVD's to MP3 on CD-R and CD-RW. All created on Vivistar RS111 drive and used generic DVDs and CD's for burning.

Displays CD/MP3 title and track text on television.

Didn't play Kodak/JPG pictures that I could see (but I would rather view pics on a computer anyway, so no big deal to me). Seems like an very good, reliable player for its price.

Major Drawback: Will only play audio CD's sequetially. In my opinion, it should also play DVD's sequentially so that a movie split onto two different DVD's will continue to play without interruption.

Every DVD-r I've created plays great in this DVD player. I don't use it for MP3 so I can't comment on that. SVCD doesn't work at all, and I thought it would. Since SVCD doesn't work I went out and bought a DVD burner instead and I love the combination of burning DVD backups and playing them on this player. My really really old toshiba won't play DVD-R so this has become my main DVD player. I like the 5 disc changer and that's the main reason I bought this. If you want to be able to play SVCDs and every imaginable format don't buy this, but for anyone who is looking for a solid 5 disc DVD player to play DVD-R I highly recommend :)
