This player works great for any bought or rented movie. I tried to play a home movie burned onto DVD-R (both Memorex and Fuji) and it will play for a while, between 5-45 minutes until it freezes and will not play any further. Even when you turn it off and fastforward to where you left off. It does not work past this point.

I bought my Panasonic A310 around Christmas 1998 for $500 after selling my Beanie Baby collection. In the 4-year warranty period they replaced nearly every moving part on the machine from constant movie watching. Been out of warranty (and college) for several years now and no problems.

I've not seen it accept a CD-R or RW disk of any format or brand that I've made, ever. After trying many brands I have had consistent luck with Maxell DVD+R 2.4x disks and cramming up to 2.5 hours on those using Showbiz to compress, DVDit PE to encode and Nero at 2.4x to burn. Verbatim "purple" bottom disks work equally well. Ritek 2.4x silver top disks work pretty good with only occasional jittering (but perfect for labeling). Memorex & Maxell DVD+RW's did not work at all.

The interface system is as intuitive as it is intelligent. Second best remote in my collection, excellent control and layout, menus are subdue and clean.

At the time I got it you could opt for the Dolby Digital decoder part to be either in the receiver or the DVD player at an added expense of $200 or so. Now it's standard in even the cheapest machines. I got a player with the decoder built in and the receiver is "ready." Problem is, if the player conks out, I need to get a new receiver too since practically no new DVD players have discrete output anymore. If my receiver conks out first, I can get rid of 5 pounds of cable in my system in lieu of an optical cable.

Overall this player makes me proud to be an early adopter.

Decent player at the time, but isn't up to current disc demands. Has trouble playing some DVD-R media toward the outer edges although the same media plays perfectly from beginning to end in other units. Verbatim DVD-R and Memorex DVD+R appear to work great in the unit.

Mine was manufactured in July 1998. I have not been able to play any type of VCD-R on it. I have to burn a VCD-R on a CD-RW. The VCD-RW works every time. It is a good DVD player.

using DVDXCOPY
Verbatim DVD-R discs work
Imation and comp USA brand CDRW's have worked for VCD

Been excellent DVD player, but my problem is the player is very picky- If any of you could give me direction: I had ripped some of my kids DVD's using DVD copy plus, I tried authoring them with DVDTOOLBOX, then burning with Nero.. It burned on the disc in correct file structure format; however, error message "wrong disc type" comes up when played in this DVD player (DVD works fine in computers)...Iam using the same verbatim discs that work with direct DVDXCOPY..so my problem is in authoring I guess...any suggestions would be appreciated-
My email is afacetiousguy@hotmail.com
Thanks

Notes:

Purchase price was $999US back in October 1998.

CD-RWs that work are true silver bottomed discs (it appears silver to the eye, not just claimed on the packaging).
CD-RW Examples: Sony & Ricoh

Independant Channel RCA output
Optical & Coaxial Output (most newer Panasonic only use Optical)

Beautiful Phaser-esque remote (Newer remotes are cosmetically lame)

DVD-Rs recorded on the Pioneer 9000 series recorder play flawlessly on this unit.

I rated this unit high for a number of reasons:

1. Superb reliability - 4+ years of heavy-duty use, 5 moves (including via plane; not counting carting it over to friends homes). These older gen units Die-Hard! (see price)

2. Excellent playback - DVD quality is near-perfect. VCD playback is second to none (Artifacting is dropped to a minimum where present).
Layer-change pause is rare. Only present on SOME pre-2000 DVDs.

3. The aforementioned (universal) remote - Not only nice to look at, but VERY comfortable to hold. and funtional. Basic TV functions (Power, Vol +/-, Channel +/-), All basic DVD functions plus joystick control (never gums up or acts 'sticky', underneath a sliding panel it houses 17 more buttons! (0-9 & >=10 numeric, Clear, Hardware (Action) Menu, Repeat Mode, A-B Repeat, and Play Mode) and it takes 2 AA batteries (preferable to AAA IMHO).

4. External Stereo Headphone Jack + Volume Knob - Useful when not connected to a stereo (like when carted to a friend's) and loud volume not appreciated by neighbors at a late hour.

5. Full Playback Control on Unit - Jog Shuttle and all playback buttons icluding track skip & scan options.

6. Discreet 5.1 channel, Optical & Coaxial connections: I get a choice! Yay!

7. Display Dimmer - Less distracting and saves nano-pennies on your power bill!

8. Black Finish - I can't stand grey/silver/mirrored because I watch my DVDs primarily in the dark and do not hide my components in a cabinet, thus I do not want bright or reflective distractions while watching my DVDs. (Not fond of silver TVs either, but would put up with it if I had a Sony XBR 34" Widescreen... mmmm... drool!)

Why is didn't rate higher:

Lack of CD-R and MP3 playback

No built-in DTS Decoder

The definate lack of an on-unit joystick, preventing menu navigation without the remote.

In Conclusion:

All in all a fantastic machine. The only reason for me to buy a newer machine is for Region-Free/PAL, CD-R, MP3 & SVCD playback capabilities. If you can live with those limitations and can find one of these old biddys for a decent price (even a 'little' higher than current players), you won't regret it.

Neither cheapo Fry's GQ brand Cd-r's nor imation Cd-r's work on making a VCD. Cheapo Fry's GQ brand Cd-rw's don't work with VCD either. Maxell and Memorex Cd-rw's do make good VCDs however.

Well....after many different tries.....I've come to the conclusion that our old A-310 just won't read DVD-RW or +RW...

I've now tried just about every brand of DVD-RW and +RW there is...no go....so forget about that...

Now...the new Primco $.99 2x DVD-R's that are hitting the computer show scene do work !!! but !!(there's always a but)

recording at 2x shows that max bitrate is about 6500/sec which is excellent anyways, especially if you are coming off a digital source....

if you record in 1x mode...then 8500/sec works just fine...

as for me...my digital source material looks just the same if I do 6500 or 8500 sec...but with Sat recorded video...I usually do VBR depending on the length of the material...

Pioneer/Apple/Sony media work fine at 2x and any bitrate...

Since Dish and DirectTV broadcast in 480x480 mode anyways, I always record in this rez and can have 4-5 hours on a single dvd at 2500-3500/sec VBR !!!

Let's keep these reports coming in !!!

Configuration:

MPEG 2 produced in Videowave
Authored to DVD with MyDVD
Burner is a HP200i
Fujifilm DVD+R

Produced a simple DVD+R to test the burner and MyDVD and it worked with default
settings. Don't know for sure whether that is mode 1 or 2, sorry. I would investigate
more, but MyDVD clashes with my other video software (MPEG 2 codex issues). Too much
production work to do, so MyDVD has to go away for now anyway.

Bought in '98 for $580 !!! Still suprised at what it can do and read...

As for CD-R compat that I've read....you HAVE !! to use "pure silver" media for VCD's and SVCD's etc... the off-color silver ones don't seem to do it...also...when recording with CD-R's, write at 8x max because the writing layer gets too dim for the A-310 to read....the slower the better...

CD-RW's work great but I've only had luck with Memorex or TDK RW's.....writing at 10x works great but have problems at 2600/sec SVCD's....write at 4x and no problem..

Now've I've got a A04 DVD-R/RW writer !!!! Primco RW media is not even seen !!! immediatly after the disc goes in..."no disc" is shown....but Primco RW media doesn't even seem to work in most players anyways...

CD-Recordable.com DVD-R media (dual sided and single) doesn't even load...it tries but no go....

got a free Pioneer -R blank with the drive.....it works great but I encoded a video clip that was shot with a pro DVCAM and encoded it 8 different times and found that around 8500 is max for bitrate...

If I try 8500 constant bit rate(CBR), it starts to fall behind and get's jerky but catches back up...if it's at 8300 or below...then no problem...

but if I encode with Variable(vbr) and have 8500 max with 7000 ave. and 4500 min... then all looks great!!!

it can handle 8500 in spurts but not continuous...

I'll be writing more about this latter this week as I'm buying a bunch of different media to try out...

but as it's looking...DVD-RW is not even an option..

Had good luck burning VCDs from Prime Peripherals CD-Rs. Player sometimes refuses to read the disc. Just eject, and try again. Got mine on ebay. All audio CD-Rs work.
When burning VCDs, make sure that your standard CDROM in your computer can read them (the file structure.) If it can't, your DVD won't either.

Good Luck!

Tried out the X(S)VCD/miniDVD and the SVCD samples found on this webpage.
The XSVCD sample played without sound and after a few seconds the playback turned choppy.
The XCVD sample played fine.
All three SVCD samples worked (although a bit choppy)but no menu or stillpicture. (I forgot to try out the audio and subtitles though. More on that later).
No miniDVD compability.
(All samples where tested using CD-RWs)

I would like to clarify my previous post. I said that Memorex CD-RW's do not work. They do not work for Audio CDs. They do, however, work for VCDs and SVCDs. Princo CD-Rs, on the other hand, work for audio, but not for VCD or SVCD. CompUSA CD-RW (SKU#274833) do not work at all and Prime Preipherals CD-R also does not work at all.

Audio VCD and SVCD
Princo CD-R X -
Memorex CD-RW - X
CompUSA CD-RW - -
Prime Preipherals CD-R - -

Playback in SVCD is perfect. I did have a problem when fast forwarding, but when I set Non Interlaced in the TMPGEng encoder, it worked.

Will play DVD-Rs, but you have to be careful of the brand. Pioneer media worked fine, GQ worked okay but had some video glitches. Meritline's DVDPro media didn't work at all.

I encourage others with this player to post brand-specific results of their DVD-R tests. Let's find the least expensive media that works well with our player!

I paid $12 for 20, but on the web site, you can get 100 for $22.
The cd plays continuously, but when skipping to other tracks, sometimes you have to either press play, or go back to the track and try again.

Plays Silver CD-RW without any problems (Prime Peripheral and Memorex were used). Does not play CD-R, not even direct copies of CD-DA's.

What works:

CD-DA (commercial)
CD-DA (copies or compiled) on CD-RW *only* which makes playability elsewhere limited.
VCD (MPEG-1) playback is smooth, with FF capability.
SVCD (MPEG-2) playback is jumpy in both audio and video. (Not Recommended)

[shameless plug] For one third the price, the Apex AD-5131 is far superior, playing just about everything that could be thrown at it, despite being a junky unit.

I have tried DVD+RW discs from HP and Sony, tried burning images using MyDVD (Sonic), Gear DVD Pro and Nero using HP DVD-Writer dvd100i. Nothing has worked. The disc does not even spin in the A310 player. Tried patching the disc with HP's DVD compatibility utility - still no luck.
I used a variety of CDRW discs and had no trouble with any VCD I have produced. CDR have been troublesome.

Plays music CD-Rs. Get "NO DISC" from VCD recorded from VHS formatted in NTSC. Plays VCD fromatted in PAL. Copy a NTSC VCD to CD-RW and the CD-RW works everytime. I was told by lady in Panasoic customer service that it would not play PAL VCDs but it plays them with no problem. I have not tried a PAL VCD-RW up to now. I may experiment with that soon.

Liked the player when I first bought it in late 1999, now it doesn't keep up (it's out of production anyway so your here cause you already own one ;-) ). Hoped it might read DVD or DVD-R but no joy ... Pinnacle's compatibility chart gave me hope but my testing using a Pioneer -A03 burner and Pioneer DVD-RW media fails with 'No Disc', Meritline DVD-R almost works, so some premium media might work, the failure mode is either a hang reading the DVD or broken up video/audio on playback (The same DVD-R plays fine on a computer or Sony DVP-NS400D), 3M CD-R in VCD format fails but CompUSA CD-RW (SKU#274833) in VCD format works fine. I'll report back here if I can get DVD-R to work reliably with 'better' media.

This is a rather old DVD Player that I've had for several years. I have tried using VCD's with the following success/failure:

VCD - MPEG1 Video - CDRW - Works Fine
VCD - MPEG2 Video - CDRW - Very jittery playback
SVCD - MPE2 Video - CDRW - Very jittery playback
* Seems to be more of the MPEG2 causing the
* problem than the VDC/SVCD.

I could not get any CDR disks to work. Only CDRWs.
