I also really enjoy this unit, though I have only tried a few DVD-R media so far.
The only problem I have with the unit so far is incorrect display of 16:9 DivX files. The pictures are displayed at the correct width but are letterbox squished along the top and bottom resulting in incorrect aspect ratio display. I've been through the display type settings (4:3, 16:9) and resolution without success. I'm feeding one of the old Sony KV34 Trinitron HDTV 16:9 sets through HDMI->DVI.
Any advice? I can give the player a 9 if I can fix this little problem.
Thanks. |

After using this machine for about 1 & 1/2 years, I can honestly say now, it's one of my favorites. Discovered all the machines's quirks, know what to do now to keep it functioning correctly.
Apparently the "Quick Start" power up mode keeps this unit in some kind of standby continuously, which causes problems like freezing and lock-ups. Once I disabled
the Quick Start mode, most of these problems previously described diappeared.
I've only had one missed Timer recording and one lock-up in the past year.
All the VHS to DVD transfers I did worked perfectly. Recently I shot some footage
with a Mini-DV camcorder, hooked it up to the 48VK, and transferred the video to
DVD-R without a hitch. And, the PQ was actually better than doing the transfer using a computer to do the conversion.
I think some of the earlier problems were due to using older, somewhat scratched DVD+RW discs, since I bought brand new DVD+RW discs, I've had no problems whatsoever. Also have used DVD-RW, DVD+R, and many DVD-R's that work perfectly.
Recording Broadcast Network channels through the ATSC/NTSC tuner delivers a quality picture. Even though this machine does not record in actual high defintion,
recordings upconverted through the HDMI port are very close to the real HD picture
coming through the tuner on my Samsung Plasma set. Can't ask for more than that.

Didn't have any problems with the EZ48VK until recently. It has "locked up"
a total of 4 times this past month, something I did not expect.
First time was a cable line signal problem, the machine was tuned to a digital station and froze. None of the remote functions or buttons on the unit worked.
Had to unplug and reset. Second time I was changing channels, again the signal
level dropped, the machine froze again. Unplugging and resetting didn't help,
so I left it unplugged overnight. It returned to normal the next day.
Third time was after inserting a DivX disc (CD). I played the video for a while,
hit "Stop", and the machine froze again. Wouldn't eject the CD, had to unplug it
and reset. When the Panasonic "freezes", the whole machine is inoperable.
Last time it froze after inserting a DVD+RW disc from another machine.
I unplugged and reset the unit 3 times, nothing would work. Couldn't eject the
disc. Machine would power on, spin the disc, no display on the front panel, and
none of the functions worked. It was "locked up".
Finally I looked in the manual about "emergency eject", two button presses while
the machine was off, after three attempts the disc finally ejected.
I re-formatted the +RW disc, after formatting the display read "this disc is
not compatible". None of this made any sense.
Apparently, the EZ48VK will freeze if the incoming digital signal is unstable,
if there's a drop in signal quality while changing channels, if certain DivX
discs are incompatible, or if a rewritable disc is a bit scratched up or made
on another machine.
My experience with DVD recorders is extensive, I've never had this many problems with any particular machine except for this Panasonic. Basically it's a great
machine when it's working properly, but when it freezes, it's a nightmare.... |

Tried to hook up and failed due to a specific limitation on how it outputs video/audio.
I want to go from Cable to Tivo to ThisDvdPlayRecorder then out to my TV1 via component and out to my TV2 (in the kitchen) via RF (cable style) on channel 3 (or 4). I want whatever is being watched in the livingroom to also be displayed in the kitchen via rf cable on Channel 3. The kitchen tv does nto have a line in, per se. The Panasonic player does everything except RF output of what is playing on DVD or Tivo. RF only plays what is coming in to the Panasonic via the cable. If you unhook the direct cable input (which is what I want) it doesn't output anything via the RF. Fiddled with it for hours and could not get it to work. Called Panasonic and got a busy signal forever... not even "you are 15th in line" or "your wait will be 20 minutes". So, I gave up and will try another brand. My old Sylvania met my needs with ease. Sigh. |

First impressions of DMR-EZ48VK: the machine is large much like old VCR's from the late 80's - early 90's. The display is large and bright, too.
The tuner is excellent, but the tuning system is weird.... it steps through both analog and digital channels sequentially, unlike other machines with digital/analog tuners. There's no button on the remote for switching between digital/analog stations. When a DVD is inserted, the display shows the time remaining on the disc in whatever record mode is chosen. So a blank DVD will show "SP 2:00". I haven't explored everything in the menu system yet, so far I don't see a setting to show the clock while in operational mode.
This unit has two settings for power : EZ start, and "off". Set to "off" mode, the machine takes about 60 seconds to power up and read a disc.
In "EZ start" mode, the time is cut in half to about 30 seconds.
The DVD drive is a bit noisy, you can hear the drive accessing its
functions during playback or recording.
The Auto Channel setup took about 15 minutes, and detected all available QAM digital stations from my cable line, in addition to the analog channels. The Auto Clock Set showed the wrong time, so I set the clock manually.
The remote works well, I was able to figure everything out without referring to the manual, however one glaring omission is the lack of an
"open/close" button on the remote. Loading/ejecting DVD and VHS is done via
the front panel.
In order to change inputs, one must toggle through the Input menu, which is TV, for watching RF input, Input 1 (rear), Input 2 (front) and DV.
I noticed a washed-out appearance to video inputted from my cable box, until I saw a Black Level setting in one of the menus. The Black Level is adjustible for both Input and Output modes.
Picture quality seems on a par with other DVD recorders I own, HD broadcasts through my digital cable line look very good.
One of the best features of Panasonic DVD recorders is the Flexible Record mode, allowing the machine to choose picture quality adequate to fit a scheduled recording outside the normal times of one-hour, two-hour, four-hour speeds, etc. You can set the desired length of FR recording in the menu.
The Panasonic has a feature called "Create Top Menu" after recording.
This is helpful for playing discs on other machines, as it creates thumbnails of recordings which can be named if so desired.
Disc titles can be named before or after recording, a handy feature.
Most Menu functions can be accessed from the remote using the "Function" button. The menu system is a bit cryptic, but not at all hard to understand if you're used to typical DVD recorder operations.
The VHS mechanism seems to work quite well, and the picture quality is quite good in either SP or EP mode. Unfortunately, digital broadcasts
cannot be recorded to VHS, a glaring fault in the design.
One thing I don't like about this machine is the constant on-screen display of channels and input shown in the upper right hand corner of the TV screen. It's quite annoying, and stays there too long for my taste.
Every time any function is used on the remote, this large black box shows up itself and stays on way too long. There is a setting in the Menu to disable it, however. Also, the "Dispay" button on the remote does not
show relevant information, such as Channel or Remaining Time. It shows other settings in the Menu not crucial to recording or playback.
One quirk I noticed, when formatting discs, the display will show "it will
take 15 minutes to format this disc", but in reality it's less than two minutes. So far I've used +R/RW and -R/RW successfully. Discs made on other machines seem to play without problems.
All in all I'd say the DMR-EZ48VK is a well-designed machine, I trust it will last long enough to warrant the purchase price. |

| I haven't used this unit as of yet, but I want to point out that the built in ATSC Digital tuner will tuner digital signals broadcast over the air and received through an antenna. The prior poster was trying to tune a digital signal from his cable box, which is a different signal and requires a different tuner. I don't know whether this unit is any good otherwise or not but his whole report was based on a false premise - that he could hook up this recorder to his cable box and watch HD channels. I suspect that he may have thought that he could record HD too, but that's not possible either. |

Gave it a nine, 'cause I never give 10's......But having said that, this machine plays ANYTHING I throw at it (stuff recorded on two other DVD recorders---a year-old Liteon model, and a four-year old phillips dvdr75 which died two years ago!): dvd+r, dvd+rw, -r, +r. Of course, retail DVDs look great too.
It has an awesome ATSC tuner (auto-set-up worked and found all channels), and receives dozens of HD channels here in the Los Angeles area. Timer function works great---no faiulures.
I've had it for about a month, and made over 65 recordings---not a single "coaster" ever.
I use the HDMI output (this machine comes with its own HDMI cable--a real value).
The XP (1 hour speed) looks very clean, the SP is very good, and the EP (6 hour) is a little pixelated, but not terribly.
I've copied DVDs to VHS, and I've made direct VHS recordings---all look as good as one would expect VHS to look.
Bought at Costco---I think I'll buy another one, so that when this one wears out, I'll be assured of complete compatibility and interoperability of all my discs. |

Horrible product.
I got the dmr-ez485v at my local costco for well under $300. I was incredibly excited because it has all the features I need. When I brought it home, I was very disappointed. I didn't even get to the recording functions because this unit wont even perform the most basic ones, such as simply passing my cable box's signal through.
I have a SA digital cable box, and my provider is Cablevision in Brooklyn.
I know this unit does not have a digital tuner, but it is supposed to pass through my cable box's digital signal through it and show HD channels correctly, just like when I pass the signal through my old VCR.
Again, I am not asking this unit to display HD channels by itself. I am asking it to display HD channels that my cable box is showing!
Every time I would turn this thing on, it would only show everything in analog, and a very ugly analog at that. It would stretch the picture over my wide screen Sammy, and the picture looked very bad. When I watch analog channels without this dvd writer in the equation, they look just fine. HD looks crystal clear also.
I wanted to plug this unit into HDMI2, and my cable's output into HDMI1 on my TV, so that I could switch between this unit and the cable. Unfortunately I couldn't even do something as simple as that. I started getting the dreaded "Your TV does not support HDCP", and "HDMI output is blocked" messages. Off course turning off the cable box and TV and turning them on again, doesn't help. The messages persist! Neither the cable company nor Panasonic can say anything smarter than "try turning off your cable box, it could be a sync problem".
Eventually, as a last resort, I tried plugging in my cable through HDMI1, but outputting the DVD writer through component cable. As soon as I did that, the signal was lost. I checked everything to make sure the connections are proper. It was. Still no signal. I got really frustrated, and decided to return this blasted thing, but lo and behold, I couldn't even take my DVD disk out now! Several minutes later, when I was almost starting to swear, I discovered that the whole unit was locked up. I pressed the "reset" button, and only after that I was able to get this piece of junk to spit out my DVD.
I am pretty sure the unit was not faulty, since I saw similar reviews on amazon concerning older models of this same writer. I also very much doubt that I made any mistakes. I am a young man, and quite tech savvy. This is by far not the first time I have to hook up equipment to my TV. I have built several computer systems all by myself, which is much harder than hooking up a DVD writer. I am very upset and disappointed since this is the only unit aside from the crappy Phillips that has a USB and SD input. On top of this, Panasonic is said to have the best LP mode, which I will not get a chance to test out since this unit doesn't even offer basic functionality. |
