I have about 40 DVD-R & DVD+R Home Videos from my camcorder that I made on my PC using Pinnacle Studio programs. I purchased this model in hopes of easily converting some older home videos from VHS & SVHS over to DVD Format. But I also wanted to be able to play my PC created DVD's. I got errors on all I tried (both +R & -R) on this machine, even though I can play them on 7 other DVD players I have access to. I figured something might just be bad with the unit I purchased, so I returned it last week. I picked up the newer model (DMR-ES40V) yesterday, and got the same bad result. Very frustrated with Panasonic now, and I just returned the newer unit.

Comments:
To anyone who wants to used the burned DVDs from this recorder in their PC or Mac to edit and reburn, you might want to pass on this model.

After making a call to Panasonic, they told me that none of their DVD recorders are intended to make disks for use on PC. Neither my home computer or my work computer would read the burned disks (I tried a DVD-RAM disk and a DVD+R, finalized). My colleague's computer did, but it was very peculiar. It had 9 VOB which totaled about 8.5 GB of memory...but it was only a 4.7 GB disk!

I didn't want to give this recorder an extremely low score for the simple fact that it is a great recorder! It provides high quality recordings, has lots of great features and is very easy to use. Unfortunately, the one thing I need it to do, it can't.

I just tried an experiment. I put used DVD Decrypter to rip the burned disk (in the computer that could actually read it) in IFO mode. When I examined the files that were ripped, it only included 3 of the 9 VOB files and weighed in at around 2.8 GB. This leads me to believe that (for some reason or another), the recorder creates 1 or more "phantom" VOB files when burning the disk. I could easily use the ripped files (which was in fact the entire recording) to edit and burn to a new disk. So, it IS possible to use the burned disks in your PC, but ONLY if you have a drive that is capable of reading them. How do you know if yours will?? Let's put it this way...save your receipt!

Although the DVD portion of this recorder will
play both DVD+R and DVD-R, the documentation
claims that it will only record on -R media.
I've not tried recording on +R media.

Comments:
I like it. It has a very solid feel. This new model will record on +R disks.

Recording in LP mode is a little blocky. EP mode is TERRIBLE. I can't imagine why anyone would want to use that. This isn't much different than on my Toshiba DR2. I've heard the JVC might be better at these lower speeds, but in SP, the picture on the Panny looks great.

Much more intuitive than my Toshiba DR2. Remote is nice, complete, and fairly uncomplicated, considering it operates both vcr and dvd. Labelling is easy, and I particularly like being able to save labels. Scheduling recordings is a snap, too.

I was in for a big surprise when I called up the disk menu. The thumbnails are animated and have sound (silent stills on the Toshiba). Pretty cool.

The Panny also seems to load faster than the Toshiba.

The machine lacks firewire. The Panny's CM Skip only skips forward (the DR2 also skips backward 10 seconds in case you over-skip). The Panny's skip seems to only work on disks recorded on it (it will play but won't skip on DVD-RW recorded on the Toshiba). I'm still experimenting. Maybe it just doesn't like finalized disks.

I've "shared" DVD Ram disks with both machines without a problem. The Panny won't read a DVD-RW disk recorded on the Toshiba unless it's been finalized.

On the VCR side, the rewind is blazing fast. There is a trick mentioned in the manual that allows you to run the vcr through the component connection. I've never seen a vhs picture this clear.

Be sure to read the manual to learn how to dim the front display (default setting can be seen from space), and learn how to deactivate the rf connection so you don't have to push the vcr/tv button every time you turn on the machine.

All in all, a well made, well designed machine with options to record/play just about every format except DVD+RW.
