I brought this recorder to convert all my VHS tapes to DVD.
It records very good but it takes it time to load up the DVD's It also takes time to finish writing the recordings to DVD's.And it also has had no problems recording copyrighted VHS tapes or recording TV programs that it states in the manual that it will not record.
I have tried every type of DVD disc it says it can record to and they worked it also plays MP3 discs.
I had this thng for 10 months and after sevral recordings on DVD's the lens reader locks up and gives the U61 error meesage. There are other reviews that say it does the samething after 67 recordings.
I got this DVD recorder from Wal-Mart for $175.00 after taxes and they don't sell it anymore I'm trying to find a replacement a good replacement DVD recorder that does the samething.

PLUS: One great DVD recorder. Excellent video quality at 1, 2 and four hours, Flex record a big plus. Ability to play first title without a title menu. Extra features when using DVD-RAM. Quiet fanless operation, remote can control some TVs. S-video inputs and output. Thin and good looking. Very quick to format DVD-R and DVD-RAM.
MINUS: no pause on front panel, no open/close on remote,
REC MODE to close to REC button, no zoom playback. Works best with DVD-RAM and DVD-R can use DVD+RW to record but does not like reading DVD+RWs that have been recorded. DVD+R DL must be recorded with 2 steps. No digital tuner or IR blaster.

I think this is the BEST replacement for you VCR sold.

Bought this recorder to transfer VHS recordings to DVD. Generally I am very pleased with the purchase. Picture quality in both record and replay is very good.
Built in TBC is better than using the VHS player's TBC.
Recorded VHS's using noise reduction and TBC are excellent, and actually improve on the original.
Won't record macro vision encoded VHS tapes. Only had one failed record and that was on a cheap disc. Disc tray feels weak, the noise of the laser assembly sounds tinny as it tracks across the DVD.
Finalising is made easier, as it gives you a yes/no prompt after recording.
Picture quality a slight improvement over the ES10.
Only cost me $299 NZD so generally Im very pleased with the purchase.

Good overall features, however annoyed about no Multi-Regional function. I paid AU$250 (about US$211) for this Recorder yet it cannot play DVDs from other regions.

Is anyone aware of a DVD Hacks Code that I can use?

I have a DMR ES10 that puts chapters in every five minutes. When the disc is played on another dvd player there is a few second pause at each chapter. In the manual it states that that will happen on non compatible players. That sucks. Panasonic could not give me a fix.
Do most DVD recorders do this.

I'm quite shocked!

First, the picture quality is GREAT, which is what I was lookig for! And it's simple to use

(BIG) HOWEVER, the XP (HIGH QUALITY RECORDING SETTING) IS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR "SCHEDULED" recordings. You cannot hit record spontaneously and record at XP quality...you have to "speed" through a fast schedule recording to record something at XP QUALITY.

What is up with that? That's pretty ridiculous!

Two things:

I'm assuming this is the case with ANY DVD type.

I have only tried DVD-R, DVD+R, AND DVDRW.

I have NOT tried DVD RAM (but i'm assuming it will do the same thing?!)

Still, this is troublesome to me and I think i'll look into purchasing the Pioneer DVR-640H-S (which I hope has on the fly recording at very high quality unlike the Pioneer ES15S!

Plays DIVX and XVID fine - had a minor issue with a DIVX which uses a 'ms' audio codec. I used VirtualDub to fix this issue (direct stream processing for video, and full processing mode for audio, using the LAME MP3 codec with highest setting.) and the new version of the DIVX played perfectly - with no degradation of video and no obvious issues with audio.

On region 1 dvd - the quality is not quite as good as my old toshiba - but once you watch a few you cease to notice it - its also possible its my 50hz tv

I've only used the DMR-ES15S to record so far, so can't comment on playback. I needed a DVDR that would record Closed Captioning, and searching on-line, this was the only brand/model I could confirm handled it. So far it's done a great job with the 2 dozen recordings I've made, & the internal filtering is much better than imagined -- a 2 hr recording on a single layer disc looks good, where normally anything over 1 hr 45 min starts to show some serious degradation & artifacts. The max you can record is 8 hours on a single layer disc - it will handle DL but only 1 side at a time - not continuously. I really like what Panasonic calls Flex Recording, where you fill in the length before recording, & the DVDR will adjust the bit rate accordingly. Burned +RW discs look just like a regular DVD to your PC, so content only has to be copied.

As mentioned, it does record CC, which can be de-muxed to a separate file & converted for subs using SCC Tools including General Parser. As long as you don't re-encode the mpg2, the CC stays with it, though cut edits with Project X will strip it out. Recorded CC shows up great on TV, *If* your DVD player supports it.

Cons: The DMR-ES15S only records 4 gig to a blank - I imagine this leaves room for editing & menus etc., but it would be nice to be able to fill a disc using a higher bit rate for more quality.

One slight design problem is the door that covers the front inputs -- it opens in an unusual way (you pull it towards you) & we almost broke it off at 1st. Another is that while it does have coax pass-through (for cable/ant etc) you can't use it for playback. And the remote could be designed more intuitively.

My biggest complaint is the owner's manual, My only real problem came during upgrading the firmware: At the end of the process the tray is open & you power the DVDR off, only the power button is right under the door for the tray -- have someone handy with small hands if you're are big like mine.

Probably a better recorder than most in its price range, but still not so great. Anything over 2 hours is useless. Playback of retail DVD's has mosquito noise and block noise that doesn't exist on the disc. Flimsy drive component, no zoom controls, and if there's a time search I never could find it. By model number it looks like it might be a successor to the ES10 or ES20 -- it isn't, by a wide margin. It records black levels too dark from VHS tapes. Recordings made on this machine abound with artifacts. Spend $50 more and get something better. After a few recordings and playings you'll grow highly irritated with this model.

I returned a AKAI (excellent quality picture and no trouble to understand the manual) because my other dvd payers will not play disks recorder on this region free machine. Then, after much research, I when for a safe quality machine like this one. Very good price. The manual needs MUCH improvement. Very difficult to understand. So far it work very well. DVD-R do not needs to be formatted but dvd+r need to formatted, both need to be finalized. I have not tried yet the dvd ram it came with the recorder. I will give and update in the future. Rating could be higher, but because of the manual, I give it an 8.

I meant to say A-B Repeat (looping) and not Auto Repeat. Come to find out the ES15 does not have A-B Repeat! I thought every DVD player/Recorder had that useful feature. Hey Panansonic! Find the twit who decided to leave this simple yet useful feature we've become accustomed to out and wack him/her in the head!

Also, I tried recording on two Dual Layer disks last night and the deck wouldn't take them. It said I must format the disks beforehand, which I did, but it kept saying the disks needed to be formatted even after it formatted them. I never had a problem recording on the same dual layer disks in two computer drives. No answers to this problem on the Pana site. I haven't tried any other disks but HP/Sony DVD-R work.

The ES15 is a nice unit, but it's not fine tuned enough for the market. I think it's going back.

To Moonbear?, I think a future firmware update will correct the issue of the es15 not playing dvd+rw's recorded on other units. Otherwise, this recorder seems great. It replaced a liteon lvw-5005 that died. Liteon has the right idea, but the quality is junk. I always wanted a better quality dvd recorder with multi-format recording capability and firewire like the lvw-5005 and the ES15 fits that bill.

One problem I haven't figured out is how to do Auto-Repeat on the ES15. Like starting from one point of a recording then ending at another point and repeating it. The manual only mentions chapter playlists but it only works with DVD-RAMs.

Anyone know how to do Auto-Repeat on the ES15?

All positive reviews of Panasonic DMR-ES20 prompts me to get this unit since it's got 1394 port and DVD+RW compatibility. DVD+RW was the main reason I went for Philips DVDR 615 last year.

HOWEVER, the format of DVD+RW discs that I burned on PC can't be recognised, which are all standard DVD-Video, and the DVD recorder offers to format these discs. I tried to set the book type of those DVD+RW to DVD-ROM but this DVD recorder still can't play them. The same DVD+RW discs play fine on my other units, namely old Philips DVDR 615, Sony DAV-FX10, Philips PET 1000, Sony DRX-810UL DVD Recorder, Matsita CW-8124 (in Mac Mini).

Since DVD+RW is the new format that Panasonic just added to their new models, it's likely they are still not 100% working unless it's formatted on their recorders and used to record TV programs.

DVD+RW was the show stopper 1 year ago, and today it is still the same. I'm returning this unit tomorrow.

This is a very nice 2006 Panasonic Model that just came out. It does all I want and does it WELL. I've tried several other brands in various price ranges and returned them ALL, even the Panasonic ES20. The main problem with that unit was the RF interference that the internal fan/power supply caused. This unit has no such interference problem AT ALL! Audio/Video is always in sync, PQ is excellent at the XP and SP modes, and still quite acceptable at LP recording mode. For the price, this unit is working out very well and I am a very tough customer to please! So far, I have had ZERO finalization problems and all recorded discs play great in various players, with no stutter. I think they finally got this RIGHT.
