Comments:
Initially I had nothing but praise for this DVD recorder. But having owned it for a year some "issues" have started to appear. All the positives about this machine are true. Excellent picture and sound quality (both replay and record). Good playback compatability with different disc types etc.

- THis machine gets confused pretty easily.Quite often the machine will lock up with "self checking error". Often the cuplrit is only a thumbprint on the disc, but you can spend anything from 10 minutes to 1/2 an hour trying to free the trapped disc, cleaning it, the re-booting the DVD recorder. Often, after the self check error you get a "E99" error where the recorder still wont work. You have to power down the recorder (often by pulling the power cord out and leaving it off for a few minutes).

- After transferring a lot of VHS clips to DVD, I had some finalising issues. It appears the recorder doesn't leave enough disk space to write the finalising data, if you put a lot of individual tracks on the disc.
I spent all week transferring them. Now I am left with a number of un-finalised dvd-rs which won't play on any other players apart from the ES10. I have tried using ISO buster to rescue the individual mpeg clips but still have a long way to go retrieving them.

- When transferring from VHS to DVD, there is some video material the ES10 just doesn't like. Sometimes, on shot changes within a tv programme, the ES10 will go to a distorted black and white picture for a few frames. Similarly, on a credit roll containing a green freeze frame, the ES10 goes black and white. I am using a top of the line S-VHS player with a built in time base corrector. No matter what edit settings I set the two machines to, I can't get rid of this.

In addition, the ES10 confuses the "video hash" of a vhs machine in e-e mode without an aerial connection, as footage with Copyright encryption protection! It comes up with "cannot copy this material. not allowed". So you have to reset the machine, pause the vhs machine with synchronous footage.

- Finalising a dvd takes far too many key presses, deep in menus. This is very annoying.

I have been using this recorder for 1 year + 4 months; it WAS working fine, however, it started to show signs of trouble while powering on, then it just went completely dark on me - no power at all, not even the clock. I called their support and they want me to send it in. I dont know if I'll bother, due to the expense; I could just buy a new one. I wish I would have bought an extended warranty with it!

Comments:
The DMR-ES10 is a probably a better player than recorder. It supports all media DVD media that I have tried.

DVD+R DL will be accepted but only if DVD bit setting is set to DVD-ROM.

Old 2.6 or 5.2 (double side) DVD-RAM media is not supported, but recent DVD-RAM 4.7 and 9.4 (double side) from 1x o 5x is supported (at least the ones I have tested).

It very important to note that is a regular ISO image is burned in a DVD-RAM disk, the DMR-ES10 cannot play the movie. But you will be able to use this media once it has been formatted for DVD recorded use.

I use this recorder as a pass through of VHS tapes for recording them in my PC through with the help of an ADS Pyro AV-link.

In summary it was a great buy and it is compatible with 16x media after a firmware upgrade.

Sad story: after one year + 2 weeks, for no reason it will not power on any more; it goes dark, no display no clock.
I tried to unplug the power and plug it back on, it just will not power on as if there is no power supply.

Any clue? It was working beatufully until now!
Sunday is Wimbledon final! This is nuts!

warranty is 1 year only!

Excellent recorder, the DVD_RAM media acts like the HD found in newer (expensive) recorders, you can erase previous recordings freeing space for the new ones. Also writes DVD+R, DVD-E and DVD-RW but the time-slip (allows you to watch the beginning of a movie while you are recording the ending of it) and the manual chapter creation (which turns automatic at every 5mins). Erasing previous recordings On DVD-RW only free media space if the erased recording is the last one. DO NOT WRITE DVD+RW but read a DVD+RW previously recorded. DO NOT WRITE DUAL LAYER. Excellent image quality, recording from TV or VCR. The Brazilian version (DMR-ES10PL) accept Brazilian TV system PAL-M and NTSC (manual configuration). It writes on 4 compression ratios: XP(1h) SP(2hs) LP(4hs) e EP(6 or 8hs according to configuration). The DVD_RAM media is not compatible with the majority of DVD players. The trick is to edit no PC using TMPGENC DVD Author 1.6 and burn a DVD+-R. The popular (cheap) LG GSA-4167B writer can read/write DVD-RAM media (super multi logo). I’ve successfully recorded on DVD-RAM Panasonic (3x), DCD-RAM DotCom (3x) e DVD-RW Maxell (2x). The unit is silent because there is no fans, it works a little warm even when you are not actually using the unit.

Chris: Haven't noticed any volume level issues with my player during playback...

DJ: You don't need to finalize DVD-RAM discs to read them on your PC... But yYou need to have a DVD drive in your PC that can read DVD-RAM discs.

Once I'm done recording something on my Panasonic, I just take it over to my PC (which has a Pioneer 107D DVD player/burner) and upload the data for editing and authoring... Easy! :)

Has anyone had a problem with low audio output from recorded disks? While I record a program off the TV I have a full range of volume while the recording is being made. When I play it back I have to turn up the TV volume to the max in order to hear it at a normal level. Since I'm using all of the same outputs of the DVD recorder and all of the same inputs to the TV in both siutations, that leaves the recording as being suspect. Has anyone else experienced this?

Very good recordings on all DVD formats tried, no failures on grade A discs. (over 120 used so far)
For a cheap machine it offers excellent value and ease of use. And it must be remembered it is a cheap unit.
Pity chapter length cannot be adjusted but compared to other more expensive machines the picture quality at XP(x1), SP(x2) and LP (x4) is excellent. EP 6 or 8 hours gives adequate recording for throw-away recording such as soaps etc.
The FR automatic selection where you dial the record time required for the disc is very useful.
Found best media to be Ridata (Ritek purple GO4 x4)
and Ridata Extreme (Ritek G05 x8).
Tuner quality good in UK and although given as Region 2 seems happy with all regions tried so far.

Has handled all discs I've put into it so far. Got it for recording off TV and for transferring old VHS tapes to DVD. I've had Lip-sync problems doing the latter. On finalized disc the sound is hitting my TV before the picture is. Only very slightly out but it's annoying. It also does it when i've hooked up my Pioneer player to it and copied from DVD to DVD-R.
I wanted to throw all my old VHS tapes out after I'd copied them but reluctant to do this now with the lip-sync problem on all the discs. Any else experiencing this? I've tried using different leads- scart, av, svideo etc- to hook up the VHS machine to the DVD recorder but that hasn't helped.

My first DVD recorder so nothing really to compare it with. On playback it's at least as good as my last 2 players and one of those was rated no. 2 at the time by 'Which Magazine'.

I really only have one gripe and that's that I can't record movies that I paid for and recorded onto my Sky+ HDD. I guess I understand Sky's motive, why sell something once when you can sell it to the same person several times. If it was the Sky+ box refusing to output it through the high-res port I could understand that but it's the blasted Panasonic box which refuses to record it. Surely there's a fix for that annoyance.......

Other than that it seems to do what it says on the tin and, unlike others on here apparently failed to do, I read that off the Panasonic web site before I purchased the unit, so there were no surprises.

This DVD Recorder is the best cost/benefit. The quality is superb, especially in conversions from VHS to DVD. It converts from PAL-M for NTSC in all the inputs.

The built in tuner is far better than the cheaper models of dvd recorders avaliable here (Gradiente, Philips). The Timeslip function is a great feature.

Mine said Region 4 on the box, but it plays all my Region 1 disc. I fully recommened this one .

This unit is Fantastic. I use the Ram disk like a Hard drive and I can save the news, weather, simpsons or whatever and then just throw away the clips I do not want. If I record something to save then yes it becomes a little more involved.

RAM is the best but of course you need to make sure you have a DVD drive on your computer that can read it. I have the Pioneer drive at 2X and this works great to download the RAM disk or files and then Burn them into a DVD-VIDEO.

I have been recording my VHS tapes into the Panasonic onto a RAM disk and then I put the tab points in where I want them on the TV and then bring the Disk to my computer so that I can burn a DVD-Video. I found Tsunami's DVD author to work the fastest and with the best file recognition. It takes about 1 hour to download edit and burn 1 hours worth of video. I put in the Title names and even moving clips for the scenes.

Next I just bought the Hitachi 870 DVD Camcorder and this uses the RAM also.. Great unit and I can pop the disk into my Panasonic player or I can burn it to a DVD on my computer...

I can understand how for average people that RAM can be frustrating if you do not have equipment selected just for this but I guess with all the - and + differences it could be the same thing.

Thanks for the tip!

A high-tech gear still needs a low-tech solution!
Anyway, this baby really makes your life more enjoyable.

One thing lacking is the ability to auto-overwrite old section when disc is full under scheduled recording. You have to manually erase content to make room for the scheduled recording; otherwise, no recording will be made.

To turn off the autosetup when you power up, you need to hook up an RF source so that it can find at least one channel. I have satellite and found that the only way to do it was to temporarily hook the recorder up to the RF out on the satellite receiver. Run the autosetup. It will find either channel 3 or 4 depending upon the satellite receiver. When you are finished with the autosetup, just disconnect the RF cable and you won't have it start in autosetup again.

DVD-RAM

Comments:
Works wonderfully with the DVD-RAM discs. I don't worry about editing or chapter insertion because I do all the authoring on my PC.

To get the maximum versatility in this player (widescreen recording, flexible recording mode, etc.), using DVD-RAM discs is a must. In that vein, it's highly recommended that you have or buy an internal DVD reader/burner that can read DVD-RAM discs and do the authoring with your PC.

Minor quibbles:

- the recorder seems to respond rather slowly to the remote
- lacks some of the display features found on most players like remaining time, etc.
- doesn't indicate that it's set up for programmed recording when turned off (no indicator or LED)

Hi

Whilst I am pleased with the image quality of the recordings, I am very unhappy about the limited functionality.

When recording onto a -r dvd, there is no flexibility with regards to adding chapter points. The chapters are set automatically every 5 minutes. This is very annoying when recording music videos or boxing matches, as 5 minute chapters would mean that when skipping through a disc, you will often skip over an entire song or round of boxing, which is obviously not good.

Another very annoying fact is that when playing a dvd, it is not possible to see how much of the chapter or entire movie is left. I thought that this dvd recorder would also replace my dvd player too, but obviously it will not!!!

I was initially going to buy the Pioneer DVR 220, I wish I had now.

Regards
Matt

Unlike others, this one is slimmer and does not seem to have a fan!!!

If you like to edit your recording on PC and then store it on DVD-R, then DVD-RAM is good choice; Otherwise, use DVD-RW, from which the recording can be directly copied to DVD-R.

It does what it claims it can do and does a good job!!!

I was thinking about buying Sony 300GX. The fact that it now supports DVD-RW changed my mind.

I am happy with this baby. Video quility is very good even in 4-hour mode. Using 2-hour mode, you can not tell which one is original.

Used Maxell 2X DVD-RW and Kodak 4X DVD-R.

You can not mark charpter on DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD-RW.
However, charpters are automatic created when doing finalizing.

I just wanted to mention that I needed this unit to record directly off of the cable line, not the signal from my digital cable box. The tuner provided the best picture for any unit I tested!

SUMMARY:

***** WARNING: UNLESS YOU LOVE BEING INCONVENIENCED BY COPY PROTECTION AND USE ONLY DVD-RAM DISKS, AVOID THIS RECORDER LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! *****

ALMOST ALL THE ADVERTISED EDITING, CHAPTER, PLAYLIST, ETC. FEATURES APPLY ***ONLY*** TO HERE-TODAY-GONE-TOMORROW DVD-RAM DISKS. Way too many gotchas if you, like most people, don't use DVD-RAM disks.

PROS:

This hooker of a product has a beautiful picture via its tuner and recordings. "Flexible Recording" encodes at the highest-quality bit rate, to fill the disk. Sounds good, huh? Next, read the MISERY of this TRAMP of a product.

MAJOR, MAJOR CONS:

(1) WARNING!!! DVD+R AND DVD-R DISKS IT CREATES MAY NOT PLAY IN OTHER PLAYERS (AND PANASONIC SAYS SO IN ITS MANUAL). BOTH FAILED IN MY OTHER (NON-PANASONIC)PLAYER: THE MENU WOULD NOT APPEAR, ONLY A HIGHLIGHT RECTANGLE...WHEN SELECTED, THE AUDIO WOULD PLAY WITHOUT VIDEO!!!

(2) WARNING!!! IT WON'T CREATE ***ANY*** CHAPTER MARKS ON DVD+R AND DVD-R DISKS!!! HOW CRAPPY IS THAT?! IMAGINE A TWO-HOUR MOVIE WITH NO CHAPTER MARKS!!! THIS, ALONE, IS A DEAL-KILLER!!!

(3) WARNING!!! FOR BOTH DVD-R AND DVD+R, THE ***ONLY*** THINGS YOU CAN EDIT ARE THE TITLE AND THUMBNAIL...THAT'S IT! NO TRIMMING, WHATSOEVER. THE RESULTING MENU SCREEN ON SUCH A RECORDING (I RECORDED A TWO-HOUR MOVIE) IS A GENERIC-LOOKING TEMPLATE OF EMPTY THUMBNAILS EXCEPT FOR THE UPPER-LEFT ONE (THE RECORDER DOESN'T KNOW ENOUGH TO PRODUCE JUST ONE MAIN THUMBNAIL FOR JUST ONE TITLE). AS NOTED ABOVE, YOU GET ***NO CHAPTER THUMBNAILS*** WITH THAT!

(4) Remote's buttons lack ZOOM, and many are limited ONLY to the DVD-RAM disks Panasonic is PUSHING.

(4) Hollywood-appeasing, deliberately inconvenient BULLSHIT of a Channel 1 through 125-ONLY tuner with NO IR BLASTER (for your cable box, to switch its channels). Forget about recording HBO and Showtime programs you PAID FOR and aren't around to see...not only because you'd have to preset the cable box to the one channel you need, but for the possibility of the "COPY ONCE" issue, below.

(5) "COPY ONCE" PROTECTION BULLSHIT SCREWS WITH YOUR FAIR-USE RIGHTS. You CANNOT make a DVD-R or DVD+R of any such broadcast-flagged program...DVD-RAM ONLY.
