VHS playback over HDMI... used this a bit & worked OK for me to a Panasonic CT-26WX15 TV.
BUT, if you set a record to HDD time, when the record to HDD starts, the VHS stops displaying over HDMI & you get a message to use another(analog) output. Guess they only can support one Analog to Digital video conversion at a time?
I can't stand this kind of quirk in an almost-really-nice product, it's going back to the retailer on their customer satisfaction guarantee.
HTH.

Low rating because of VHS performance over HDMI. The image is underscanned and has irritating and distracting noise bars all around the VHS picture. DVD is fine and VHS is fine over component. Unfortunately, Panasonic HDAVI automatically switches the composite input to HDMI every time you press a remote function and every time play starts!
it's a design defect - I had 2 Panasonics that did the same thing. An LG was fine.

| The only problem I am having with this unit is the control of my DirecTV receiver (HR10-250). I have about 80% of the channel listing. So, to record from the channels I am missing I can do a manual record to solve the problem. Also, I added this device to my Harmony 880 remote and I can now "eject" the DVD from the remote. This is something missing from the original remote. Overall, I am pleased with this unit. |

Excellent video quality using XP & SP Mode. For VHS->DVD FR mode is best. Speaking of VHS->DVD, this is a very strong feature of this recorder. It analyzes your tape prior to recording so you end up very little garbage your DVD. Although the preferred method is really VHS->HDD->DVD. Even still, VHS->HDD is very intuitive and requires very little user input.
DV->DVD via firewire also works very well and requires very little user input.
The only negative is that you cannot copy ANY widescreen (16:9,letterboxed) content to DVD+/-R, RW, or RL without it either cropping and zooming or vertically stretching your video. The ONLY way to get content in it's original aspect ratio onto a disk is to use DVD-RAM.
Ah... finally a way to drum up DVD-RAM sales. Ok, I'm game....I picked up a DVD-RAM drive for my PC and a couple of blanks. If I play from the DVD-RAM everything is fine. When I load the DVD-RAM content into my DVD authoring tool on my PC it again gets stretched vertically. Oh No! Turns out DVD-RAM uses something called CPRM. Now what? IfoEdit? Yep....I used IfoEdit to restore my content back to 16:9 and now my videos look great again. So much for CPRM.
The main reason I chose this model is for easy transferring of my home video from mini-DV (recorded in 16:9 aspect ratio) onto DVD without spending hours rendering on my PC. I had still planned to use my PC for editing and adding chapters so the IfoEdit solution is no big deal. But still, it's my content.....just because I record my home videos in 16:9 format I shouldn't be penalized by the paranoid movie industry.
I understand they don't want you to copy a widescreen movie from HBO or something and put it on a DVD. However in the age of dvdshrink and others who does something like that anyway?
This little cat & mouse game is the only reason I don't give the unit a 10. The unit is a great addition for hobbists. However, the average user may have to take a class to get the most from this unit. |

| Confirmed with Panasonic that there is a problem with Directv only concerning the TV Guide listings. Once there is a solution, they will be sending out a firmware update. |

Excellent overall but the TV Guide schedule is not currently working for Directv subscribers. Panasonic is aware of this but I am not getting a definitive answer as to when it will be fixed which is extremely frustrating.
Note that you cannot record directly to DVD+/-R DL wit this machine but you can record from the HDD to the dual layer disc in High Speed which more than makes up for this issue.
VHS to HDD and VHS to DVD quality conversion is as excellent as the source footage as long as you keep it XP or SP in both cases. |
