I bought this unit because I wanted to transfer my VHS collection to DVD. I have recorded in 1 hour, 2 hour and in 4 hour mode. The recordings in 1 hour and 2 hour mode look as good as the original tapes and recorded TV programs. You can record in the 4 hour mode and almost everybody won't notice that it was recorded from the TV or VHS, but comparing the recorded video with the original, you can see the video is a little softer than the original but still good enough to keep.
I have recorded in 6 hour mode and it's good for instructional programs but I would not recommend it for movies or TV programs. You can see some pixcelation in dark scenes and in fast moving scenes.
The TV guide is awesome but it took me a while to program it correctly. I just go to the TV Guide search what I want to record, press the record button and that's it.
Editng and titling is tedious and time consuming. But editing is precise in cutting out scenes or commercials and in dividing a program.
I give it a 10 for it's video quality, precise editing and TV Guide recording capability. |

I love this thing. The do-all, play-all machine.
200GB HD, HDMI upconversion to 720p/1080i, Divx playback, built-in SD card reader, built-in EPG, DVD-Audio. I'll go over the big things quickly:
HD: Up to 355 hours of recording. Start playing while still recording. 1 second quick on to record. Copy DVDs to the HD and vice-versa. Watch a DVD while recording to the HD, and vice-versa
HDMI: Will convert anything coming through any of the inputs to HDTV, whether it's the built-in TV-tuner or a game-console attached to svideo. Outputs audio and video complete with DVD-audio surround sound. And there's svideo in the rear, unlike the LG, which only has a front svideo input.
DIVX: Will play all the popular Divx codecs (including 6.x), including multiple audio and subtitle streams.
DVD: Will record to anything, and does so in high-speed from the HD. In as little as 2 minutes.
EPG: Will download listings for tv/cable/digital cable/satellite. Comes with an STB controller to schedule recordings on both boxes. It automatically names the recordings from the listings.
Things I'm not fond of: 1) The STB controller was annoying, as it always switched the STB to the same channel on startup. I only use the built-in tuner and EPG now, and schedule the recordings manually for digital cable. 2) Panasonic still doesn't allow playing of MP3 or WMA from a DVD. CD's only folks. 3) No proper zoom control. The play-only models have a beautiful zoom control with 0.01 increments, plus or minus, which does wonders for Divx files. This one has none whatsoever. 4) You can't copy music to the HD. Only movies or jpegs. 5) No eject button on the remote. Luckily, a code from an earlier player works on my Harmony universal.
So, yes, this is a wonderful machine, if you can live with it's little quirks. It comes closest to being the only machine you'll ever need. |

| I've had the unit 3 months and have been unable to down load TV Guide as advertised. It used to record well and play dvd's well but now the unit is very slow to respond to commands and locks up quite often. I've asked for a repair from Panny. I'm not happy with this unit. I hope the repair lasts. |
