Willing to update the existing HD to a larger one, simply forget it.

Consider the following before you even try:

1. The firmware of the unit is not design to recognize Hard Drives larger that the one installed.

2. The power supply of the unit is also not designed to handle hard drives, which would draw higher currents on 12V and 5V than the ones specified.

3. The HD that comes with the unit is usually Maxtor standard size but slimmer, or let say low profile and also low current draw (something like this: 12V/0.6A and 5V/0.56A). To find such a HD is difficult indeed and even if you find one, let say 200MBt, or 160MBt the unit will write up to 100MBt for DMR-EH50 or up to 120MBt for DMR-E85H and then will stop as the rest of the HD does not exist.

4. And if you are still unconvinced, consider this: you can easily damage your unit trying to install a HD that draws more current than the specified. The first signs of something going wrong are typical bakelite smell as of something in the process of heating up or burning. Ups, do not panic, the power supply is handled to withstand this excess of high current for some given time, but not for long, believe me.

P.S.

DMR-EH50 is significantly faster than DMR-E85H in navigation commands execution. It just flies. Fast Record start is 1.5 seconds. Wake up on turn on is also almost immediate.

And by the way if you are not planning to use the TV Guide, turn it off, and you will never have any unexpected overnight hung ups.

Loved the unit for the first two months, then it broke. I wish I had headed the messages I read before the purchase, but I guess we never think it can happen to us.

Anyway four long, frustrating months of trying to get it serviced ended this week with Pana. writing me a check for the purchase price.

Now I'm happy I'm done with it. And I feel lucky to be rid of it, because I have zero confidence in their electronics based on my experience.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from this unit.

Had a few problems at first - one disk wouldn't eject and it said no disk. and burned a few coasters. I put a UPS on it and haven't had any problems since. I burn at 2nd lowest setting and get 6 hour long tv shows minus the commercials. The quality is still better than a VCR at this setting and I do cartoons at the lowest setting - looks the same as live to me. 16 Speed Racers on one disk. Remote sensor is all the way on the left side and I have to open the door on the stereo cab or hold the remote at a funky angle. If the remote was stronger or had better placement for the sensor - I'd give it a 10.

I bought this unit two ago. I still haven't tested all of the features of this product but the thing I was most disapointed with is that when you program the recoding times not only you need to explicitly activate the timer but this in turn blocks everything else but playing the already recorded programs. Why on earth do you need to explicitly activate the timer? I had a Panasonic VCR before and I don't remember I needed to do this. One would expect that with the technology development these things will work better and easier but Panasonic proved this idea wrong.

Horrible product from Panasonic. Unit freezes on some media for no reason and has to be taken into the shop to remove the disc.

Panasonic refuses to issue any firmware updates for this product like other makers have done to resolve problems such as this.

This is a flaw with all models of Panasonic DVD Recorders and Panasonic appears not to care - they just expect you to buy the new model...until new media is released that locks the unit and the cycle starts all over again.

Even no name brands release updates.

Hi,

I've been using the E-80 to save vhs home movies into dvd-r's. My question is, does anyone know why is it that when after the dvd-r is finalized, when you're watching the final production, it freezes for a couple of seconds between chapters?
Is this normal or are there any settings I can change to avoid this in the future?
I remember when I first used it to transfer some vhs footage it didn't do that. I might have made some changes to the unit after that.

Any help anyone can give will be appreciated

Thanks,

Using the online TV Guide Online[TV Listings]and with it's built in 80 GB it is amazing. As good as my Tivo was which died within a year. A little more work to set timers but no monthly fee!! Burned VHS to DVD without a hitch. PQ in XP mode is nothing short of incredible. Can't tell the difference from the source on my analog Sony TV. The thing that really won me over is even with a fan it's much quieter then Tivo ever hoped to be. You can't even hear it 2 feet away. Runs really cool unless your burning DVDs that will warm it up a little. Bought it at CC open box for $459.
The DMR-e85H are out now with 120GB hard drives so these are selling for a lot less now. Over all I love it! By the way did I mention it is actually made in Japan.

I have two E80H units. I got the first one in early January. It was very finicky and didn't like Verbatim Datalife discs. There was at least a 50% failure rate regardless of the recording speed. I was very discouraged until a friend recommended CompUSA discs. I tried them and no failures to speak of...maybe 2 out of 50 discs.
I added the second E80H to my system a few weeks ago. This unit is happy with either the Verbatim discs or the CompUSA discs. I haven't had a disc failure with it yet, though I've probably only recorded 15 or 20 discs at this point.
I had a lot of trouble learning to use the first unit. I finally began to make progress when I put the manual away and found a tutorial on this site. As has been said many times, the manual was written by a pack of monkeys, using random keystrokes on several typewriters over a period of millions of years. It is pretty much useless until you know how to use the recorder...then it makes sense. A bit late in the process for me. I do have trouble learning from manuals, so maybe others feel differently about it.
If you have a lot of VHS tapes to convert to DVD, you may find as I have that recording to the hard drive and then to DVD is just too slow and time consuming. Unfortunately it is the only way to do any editing. If the high speed record function was actually high speed, these units would be much more convenient. I'd like to be able to record a 2 hour disc in 15 minutes instead of nearly 60 minutes.
I have had some playback problems with a couple brands of players trying to play discs made with these recorders. I replaced my old RCA player right away because it skipped and stuttered on playback...the new RCA unit I purchased would play a few minutes and return to the menu on nearly every disc...I replaced it with a cheap Apex unit and it works much better, but I do get occasional momentary screen freezes when playing back some discs with the Apex unit.

A fantastic option for those looking for a TIVO-like recorder and a DVD burner in one. I haven't even used my VCR since buying this one. Even the extended play (104 hour recording time!) setting looks OK, but the standard SP (30-something hour recording time!) or excellent XP recording setting looks as good as the original cable broadcast did - zero loss in quality. Pause, rewind, play live TV. DVD-R's work great and you can select exactly which shows or scenes and exactly what quality you want them burned at (1-6 hours, I think it is, per disc). Schedule one time or daily or weekly show recording. Also uses DVD-RAM for re-writable recordings. Allows basic editing of scenes (ie: removing commercials or whatever) and scene and disc labelling. This thing rocks! When I get the time, all of my family VHS tapes are to be converted to DVD-R - I can't wait.

I intended on purchasing the DMR-E80 when it first came out, but I couldn't justify getting rid of my DMR-E30, which I still love. Besides, Panasonic is coming out with newer units that have larger harddrives and/or have faster transfer (copy) speeds...so I'll wait a little longer. To answer a couple of questions: *Dave, I don't have digital cable, I have Satellite. DSS gives the option of viewing a channel, make a purchase, or record program (set timer). If I want to record multiple programs, use this feature to tag the shows that I want to record, then I set the "program timer" on my DMR-E30 (in your case DMR-E80) to record from the selected input (L1 - SAT in) and come on when the tagged shows are on. I'm not sure if digital cable offers this option, if not purchase a programmable remote for your cable box, that will auomatically tune channels. *Darrel, you can backup your VHS Tapes! For under 90 bucks, goto www.interneeds.com, select converter/products and purchase a device called "vidtrackusa". It will allow you to backup any DVD or VHS Tape that you have...even to DVD-RAM, no computer needed.

Great replacement for the VHS recorder.
Too much hassel to record to internal hard drive, edit, and record to DVD-R.
I record directly to the DVD-RAM disc, then edit on my computer. The Lite-On HD-166S copys the DVD-RAM at about 6x
to my computer.
I use TMPGEnc Author to do the editing and add chapter points, then burn a DVD-R.
Note, the DVD-RAM will have a .VRO instead of a .VOB, you may have to rename it so Author will recognize it. You may also rename it to a .mpg and get it to work with other editing software.
Either way the compression and quality on the recorded DVD-RAM is just right.

This machine is a significant improvement over the E20, which was still a nice machine. The remote and the text entry screen are both easier to use. These improvements and the hard drive are enough to justify the higher price. It is available from several sources for around $530 (Look it up in epinions.com for a list by price; I chose J & R Music and was happy with them.)

The hard drive is nice for recording from TV and then deleting the commercials, but it's a significant amount of work. It's not worthwhile except for programs that will be watched over and over.

I wish it had Guide Plus or something like Tivo instead of VCR+ which requires codes and an external source of programming information.

I have had a DMR-HS2 since they came out, then I switched to the DMR-E80 when it came out. I probably do not need to say that they are the best on the market, but I will anyway!

Only two issues I have with them are this:

1. The guide or lack there of. GET TIVO FUNCTIONALITY! Or at least get an IR blaster to work(to panny).

2. Compatablity. DVD-R is OK, but DVD-RAM is not very compatable outside of the panny universe. It is a good rewriteable disk and all, but it is more expensive then comparable media and it is slower on the panny...even at the virtual 2x burn they now have.

I have overcome both of these to some extent. I have my DMR-E80 hooked to a basic PVR from Dish network. 1-year contract extension and it was totally free! I now setup the recording feature on the PVR then mirror it on the panny. This allows me to change the channel and have totally automated recording, and if by some reason the panny has a problem(it never has so far) the PVR will have a backup. Only problem I have ever had is my fingers slipped when I edited, and that was only one time...I swear.

Now for the compatability issue, well that is a bit harder. I have a liteon dvd burner that does booktyping so I can just copy the DVD to a DVD+RW disk with a DVD-ROM booktype and it is nearly 100% compatable....How compatable is that really you ask?

I can play DVD+RW's with booktype set on the DMR-E80.... Or DVD+R's with booktype set.

So for the money, until a company grows some (insert word here) and makes a PVR/DVD-R that allows editing, has a full guide and is not priced outside of my reach this is the best solution possible!

For uhu: Mine seems to "freeze" after the warning screen on dvd's made with xcopy also, but try this: When you get the warning screen, on the remote press STOP then PLAY. On my machine, she'll take right off. Also, the machine is advertized to NOT ACCEPT dvd-rw, however dvd-rw's burned with xcopy in my Sony VAIO play as well, if not better than dvd-r's. As advertized though, it will not recognize a blank dvd-rw...go figure! I'd been using generic COMPUSA dvd-r's, the ones with the silver face worked fine. Then I ran into a different lot with a white face, and the machine doesn't see them. What are y'all using with success???

Seems like a great dvd player and recorder. Picture playback is great. I do wish that it had both component video and digital audio inputs for my two highdef satellite receivers. Only other problem I am having is playing backed up movies made with dvd x-copy. The warning plays but will not play the video. Gets stuck. Other videos backed up with other programs are ok. Either that or try a crack to remove the addition of the warning.

I really like the DMR-E80H and scored it well. After using this unit for a while, I'm really glad I held out for one with a hard drive built in. It makes the unit far more flexible, in my opinion.

I've had good luck writing to Ritek G04 DVD-R's, TDK, Panasonic, and Memorex DVD-RAM disks have also worked flawlessly.

Compatibility with set-top units has not been much of a problem. All the remotely modern DVD players I've tried have worked with the DVD-R's burned with this unit. My vintage 1997 Pioneer DVL-700 combo Laserdisc/DVD does NOT like discs from the Panny encoded at the Panny's XP mode -- I'll try some of the other modes and report back.

Quality of the recorded image is quite good. I've worked primarily with the XP and SP modes, both of which produced very nice results. As expected, I see more MPEG Block noise on SP. However, it is not offensive or intrusive in most cases.

Panasonic seems to have geared their encoding mode for moderate-bright scenes. It also seems to be tweaked in the direction of 'action' scenes over 'still' scenes. There are some settings that can tweak this further that I have not played with yet.

Where you WILL notice MPEG block noise is on dark scenes and sudden changes to dark scenes. Again, on XP and SP mode it is not offensive, but I did notice it. Of course, in fairness, I seem to be "blessed" with the ability to see MPEG block noise. I notice it in commercial DVDs, digital cable, etc., so take that into account when reading this review.

I have recorded shows for my wife several times. When asked about the quality she said, "I didn't notice -- I was just watching the program." A telling comment, in my view -- the quality was good enough to NOT distract a viewer who was NOT specifically looking for problems...

I found the manual to be a bit awkwardly written. However, I find the unit itself to be very intuitive and LOADED with neat features. Panasonic really packed this unit with goodies.

The menus created during the DVD-R finalizing process are a bit, well, uninspired. They are, however, functional. If one is in to 're-authoring' their DVD's, the Panny menus can be removed in favor of something more sophisticated.

DVD-RAM is not the evil that some people make it out to be, either. If you have a drive on your computer that reads these discs (and they are becoming more common), you can grab the .VRO MPEG files right of the DVD-RAM and use the various tools available here. Panasonic sells a combo DVD-RAM/DVD-R writer for about 100 USD, and LG sells a RAM/+-R unit, too.

Editing on the Panny isn't bad, either. I was pleasantly surprised with both the flexibility and intuitive nature of the interface.

To this point, I'm VERY impressed with the unit and recommend it without reservation. I'm glad I took the plunge.

I bought this unit on January 1, 2004. I have been converting VHS to DVD, recording TV to the HDD and then converting to DVD video. I am quite pleased with this machine. I do want to point out the advantages of using the Flexible Recording option. This calculates the space required to write an entire "program" to DVD-R and uses an algorithm that utilizes the entire DVD-R. I use this feature for VHS that lasts over 2 hrs. and get a better quality DVD video than using LP mode.

I played SVCDs in it but it was choppy as hell and read like a vcd I have no clue there is probably somethign to fix it. I bought mine at best buy for $539, on an open box deal well worth it. Go for this one or wait for the latter models similar to this.

This product does exactly what I wanted it to. Records TV shows when I'm not home, allows me to archive them after editing out commercials. Easily captures my home videos and lets me do some simple editing.

It would be nice if it could play the DVD+R format, but I have another player that will handle those fine.

Great toy and made my VCR earn a spot in the closet on top of the turntable and dual cassette deck

I've had this unit now for about 2 weeks. I've been frustrated and disappointed with the manual. I've read much online about operatioons, but details are left out of every article, making assumptions about what I should already know about terminology and so forth. In general, I don't understand why Panasonic would depart from the simple operating methods of a VCR to the unneccesarily complex and difficult to grasp operation of this unit. The entire operational concept could be greatly simplified and this unit could be much more user friendly than it is. The editing capability seems to be imprecise and much more cumbersome than editing with an editing VCR. Directly recording to a DVD-R disc apparently leaves no option at all for editing, and recording to the HDD and then dubbing to DVD-R adds a great deal of time to the process, making it very inefficient. If a person has a lot of VHS tapes to convert to DVD, as I do, it is almost a hopeless situation when editing is required unless you are simply copying without any editing.
All in all, the unit is like writing on stone tablets compared to what I would have liked...a simple, easy to operate, efficient tool for transferring VHS to DVD, allowing editing just like my editing VCRS. It isn't, it doesn't, and I'm not very happy.

I've had this recorder for about a month now and I like it alot. I bought it to replace a 9 year old vcr. The recorder can record tv shows to the hard drive while watching a dvd. Also, unlike a vcr, the unit does not have to be turned off for the recording timer to activate. DVD-RAM price is not bad - Costco has them for $13 for 5 pack.

Video quality is very good at XP and SP. I use a 36" Sony XBR. Decent recording also at LP and watchable at EP.

Some drawbacks - I am still unable to edit files from dvd-ram (of content taken from the recorder on a pc - tried Adobe Premiere, etc. Other than that, I've transferred content from the hard drive to DVD-R with great results.

In all, I highly recommend this recorder.

Some last notes, I have burned about 100+ DVD's without any problems. I have copied 6hr VHS to 6hr DVD-R (didn't know you could even do 6hr DVD). XP mode 1 Hour is VERY nice, SP 2 Hour Great, EP 4 Hour Good, LP 6 hr only if needed) I've used DVD's from TDK, Verbatim, Memorex, and 2 others I forgot, All work fine, this is a 2x drive I beleive, the E100H has a 4x/120GB HD). I wonder if there is a way to upgrade to 120GB+ on the E80H. Anyone ask Panasonic? This unit is quieter than my Xbox when it is on. The DVD-RAM is only 4.7 not the 9.4 just like the DVD-R. Is it an EIDE drive in this unit? Anyways, love this unit, can you tell.

I have now burned close to 100 DVD's with this machine. Wife got it for me for Xmas. I was kidding about wanting it for Xmas but it was a great suprise. Convert all my VHS-C tapes over (50+) and Copied 6Hour VHS in LP (Looks a lillte worse than the VHS 6Hour but I dont care it's Kids stuff like Dora, Blues Clues etc..) Have been creaing 2-4Hour TV recordings to HD before I edited them on the Unit and Dub them to DVD-R. This will keep me happy until we get Dual Layer and 300GB drives in the next generation for the same price we got this for. It is awesome, Panasonic Rules. I also have the Panasonic DVD-S25, COBY DVD-515 (Cheap) that has the sme menus and it is really nice purchase as well. I also bought a new DV camcorder for about $900, it sucked in low light etc.. brought it back. I opted instead for a cheap Cannon ES8600 Hi8 and convert the tapes to DVD with this unit (2 Hours - SP) and IT IS GREAT!, now I don't give a damn about this over priced DV recorders, they are a rip off unless you have about $2000+.
