questions for those of you who own this:
how fast does this recorder finalize discs, say a 45 minute video that has been run straight from the camera into the recorder.
i heard mention that the recorder doesnt like non-panasonic cameras, is this true? thanks |

| I'm owner of the Panasonic DMR-E60S and I'm very pleased with the purchase. This model is almost equal to DMR-E100, but no HDD and not so expensive as overpriced E100. Excellently build unit. Durable with the recording and playback (2 month already and never failed so far). Esthetically correct and user friendly design. If you'll decide to buy Panasonic brand and do not need HDD, this particular model, with all its useful options, is the way to go. |

Oops. That last comment should have read, "I have already burned EIGHT discs..."
I have now burned about 20 discs, and still no coasters! [Knock on wood.]
I have noticed one occasional technical problem with the CompUSA discs that I've been using. Every now and then (about once every 15 recordings, or so) when I try to record using the timer recording mode, the DVDR turns on to do the timer recording, but then it fails to 'READ' the CompUSA DVD-R disc, and it does not record.
For me, it's not a big problem because I am dubbing from my TiVo, so I just reset the timer recording and try again. However, for those of you who are recording directly from your TV signal (broadcast, cable, satellite, etc.) in the hopes of watching the program later, you might miss the program and not be able to watch it later.
I suspect this might be because the CompUSA DVD-R discs are not 100% compatible with the Panasonic DMR-E60. Many folks here at DVDRhelp.com have indicated that the lower-priced DVD-R discs (and even some of the more expensive DVD-R discs) have some compatibility/reliability problems, so I suspect the problem lies with the CompUSA discs and not the Panasonic DMR-E60, especially since I've read about disc compatibility/reliability problems with virtually every brand and model of DVD recorder out there. But it is something to watch out for.
Still, I rate the Panasonic DMR-E60 a 9 out of 10. The Flexible Recording mode is an incredibly useful feature, that other manufacturers are going to have to incorporate into their new DVD recorders. |

Okay... First update.
I have received my Panasonic DMR-E60 (Silver). There were no defects that I could see, so I hooked it up to my video system. [I connected it to the outputs from my TiVo, and then I sent the DVDR's output to my TV's inputs.]
I have already burned six discs and amazingly I am 8-for-8! ...No coasters, so far! I am using fairly inexpensive DVD-Rs that I bought at CompUSA. They were about 75 cents each after the rebate. Having read many comments about how the reliability of DVD-R discs is hit-or-miss, I am very pleasantly surprised that these cheap discs are working very reliably so far.
It has only been two days, and there is still plenty of time for things to go wrong, but so far I would rate this Panasonic DMR-E60 as a 10 out of 10.
This is my first DVDR and it's just great to be able to save all of my programs to DVD instead of VHS!
Up next... dubbing my old VHS tapes to DVD. |

Hello All! I am a newbie to this forum. I've been reading your various posts and comments for two weeks now as I was trying to get some first-hand input on the various DVD recorders available. I found your comments very helpful and I just made the plunge and purchased my first DVD recorder! [From the comments and reviews, I decided on a Panasonic. The vast majority of the top-rated DVD recorders here were Panasonics. I decided on a DMR-E50 or DMR-E60 because I don't need a DVDR with a built-in harddrive, and these two models seemed like the best value.]
I purchased online, which worries me a little because if I have problems I cannot easily walk back in to the store to return the DVDR. Riskier yet, I purchased an open box unit, but I couldn't resist the price and I received assurances from the salesperson that the full manufacturer's warranty would apply to my DVDR even though it was an open box purchase. I even called Panasonic to verify and the customer service rep at Panasonic verified that their manufacturers warranty (one year on parts & labor) fully applies to open box purchases. ...We'll see whether they stick to this if the DVDR has any malfunctions.
I purchased a Panasonic DMR-E60 (Silver) from SoundCity in New Jersey (actually their online store is called Audio Video Shopper). I have made electronic purchases from SoundCity in the past and have never had a problem with them...let's hope that continues.
The price was only $287 ($269 for the DVDR plus another $18 for shipping and insurance). SoundCity said the unit has no problems whatsoever, is cosmetically perfect, and is not missing any parts or accessories that come with the factory-sealed units. (Why then were they selling it for only $269? ...I'm keeping my fingers crossed.)
Anyway, thanks to you all for the multitude of insightful comments and info you have posted here; it certainly helped me decide which DVD manufacturer (Panasonic) and models (DMR-E50 and DMR-E60) to look for.
I will let you all know how things turn out. |

To my surprise, good quality even with LP on RAM. Overall impression is good. But not excellent.
a) 1394- Cannot detect my Sony DV PC-1.
b) Is there a way to copy DVD-R with this machine alone without hitting the computer?
c) I do not find the SD and PCMCIA slot useful at all.
d) Anyway to transfer the RAM to DVD-R?????
It would be nice if this device can interface with computer as the Philips'. |

| OK with A-brand(TDK, Verbatim) DVD-RW discs. No component out and no progressive scan for european modification of DMR-E60 but there is very good SECAM to PAL converter. There is no real NTSC to PAL converter, NTSC discs can be transcodered to PAL60 signal only. Unfortunatly it doesn't play wma files at all. JPG files can be read from SD card, PC card or DVD-RAM discs only but not CD-R/RW. That's a pity. mp3 files can be read from CD-R/RW discs only. |

I have this unit about a month. I have no problems using Sony TRV-340
Digital Camcorder. Input to Firewire on DMR-60. Use Panasonic DVD-R
Media. Hollywood quality video. Rcorded HBO movies also. Quality is as good as the reception on the TV.
If you use a DVD-Ram blank you can edit scenes. Cannot edit with
DVD-R. You must edit using the remote "pause" button. The same method you used copying VCR tapes.
This unit does not interface with a PC.
After editing a video on the ram disk, there should be a way to
copy to a DVD-R disk. |

| I have a panasonic dmr-hs2 ( an earlier dvd-r recorder ) and the firewire/i-link works with my sony digital 8 camcorder. I know that in a dmr-hs2 owners group people have reported that it has been hit or miss with various brands of firewire camcorders working with their panasonics. |

| I'm wary about buying this unit because Panasonic tech says DV input recognizes only Panasonic-brand camcorders. It's unclear from other posts whether owners must connect non-Panasonic camcorders for dubbing using S-video/RCA ports, or whether in fact Sony, etc., cameras can connect via DMR-E60's DV port, with only loss being stop/pause-triggered automenu for scene resequencing and deletion. Otherwise, time-slip and simultaneous record/playback capability of DVD-RAM is appealing, but that can be had on less-expensive models. SD card input for JPEG archiving would be nice, but PC is more practical for editing/printing. |

Burned about 9 discs after a week of ownership. Dubbing old Hi-8 via the ilink port manually. Like a dub station. Have had to redo about 3 of the discs due to skipping and jitters and freezing on playback. I've used 2 different brands of discs. But i'm also putting a label on them, which i know is a 'no-no'.
Wish there was a feature to bypass the startup menu and just to have the disc auto play. I did not know about the hackly looking main menu that comes up first.
talked to panasonic and they say there is no work around that.
so far, the unit was not too expensive enough to make me want to dump it. I'll most likely move it to another room and use it with one of my tivos. |

John,
Are you using the autodub or one touch dubbing ? If so, it will not work. Thats only for DV from a cam! I put something like that in a prior post. You will need to manually START and STOP recording. I had to do the same thing with DV out from old 8mm. The digital ilink signatire is not there for the unit to automate. This feature is what is referred to a GLOSS in the industy. It sells the product but does not really work :( At least not the way real people want it to.
Regards,
tester |

I bought this machine and I like it. However, the Firewire port has me baffled...
I'm capturing video through my digital 8mm Sony camcorder (which has a firewire port) into my computer's hard drive using Ulead's Video Studio 5 Special Edition. The computer takes the video/audio information and captures it through the firewire just fine, doesn't drop even ONE frame!
Now. I've got all this video on my hard drive, edited and whatever, and now I want to use the computer's firewire port to output the edited video onto the Panasonic's DMR-E60's firewire port to record onto a DVD-R disc. It doesn't seem to work at all.
Any ideas?
Anyone? Anyone?
Thanks!
John

| Got a U99 error code twice and unit went into RECOVERY. Contacted support (via email) and they said to bring in for service! This thing is about a week old! I think its going back to the retailer for exchange or for a different model. Other than the occasional U99 the unit works well. (as advertised) |

| Great player - works fine with Fujifilm DVD-R and IBM DVD-RAM. The DV Automaic recording is a bit of a sham. Since it only works with DV that is formatted correctly. It does not work if your input was from say old 8mm tapes and you are dubbing (using the Sony Digital 8). You can get great results on 4hour recording to DVD-R and the titling is EASY as well as finializing and creating a volume title. So far it does all that is reorted to do... I just started using it. The DVD I made so far actually PLAY in another DVD player! First time! Finally I think we are past the standards war and have compatability. |

| Had the machine about a week now, NO problems. Seems to play/ record and do all that it was built for, WITH QUALITY. First impressions are true value for money and a magic machine. The SD card/ Multi media slots combined with MP3 card slots also go towards enhancing the machines versatility and value for money. Shop round for prices, though. |

| Records on DVD-R & DVD RAM. I use DvdPro brand DVD-Rs at $0.78 each to record movies. The picture quality is equal to commercial DVDs. I have played back the DVD in my Sony computer an on A Sony DVP S500D DVD player. The Panasonic E60 has firewire, SD card slot and PC card slot connections. You can play DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, Video CD, Audio CD, and MP3 discs. Record time is one to Six hours on DVD-R or DVD RAM, Two to Twelve hours on double sided DVD Ram. My favorite feature is the Flexible recording mode. You can setup the recording for the length of a movie, say One hour and 26 minutes for example and the recorder will adjust the recording bit rate to fit the recording on the disc with the highest possible recording quality. |
