Here is one nice thing I haven't seen mentioned. The E20 is an excellent way to capture video for use on your PC (my Panasonic DVD-R drive in my PC can read DVD-RAM discs).
I use the E20 to record something onto a DVD-Ram disc, I insert the disc into my PC and simply drag and drop the Mpeg2 file to my desktop. No finalizing and no DVD ripping needed.

Howdy,
let me start of by saying I'm a tweaker. Pc's that is...
they are quirky... just like all modern electronics are these days. Hell, I looked around my place and can only
find one consumer electronic device thats been around longer than 5 years. I've had a rash of hardware failures in the last month. Amongst the dead were, two....that's right,
two Ilo dvdro4's. One was my back up, both died stuck on
hello. I've been using the 04 for about a year...and yes, I returned 2 previous units. Well I've kind of gotten used
to the dvd format .... so, let me throw in my two cents.
Dvd burners are unreliable at this point in time, too much
of a headache to use. PQ , media, lockups, ect. make them a real chore. Vcr PQ may not be great... but has tape
ever failed to record during a one time only broadcast?
Well as far as the Panny Es20 goes, opinions vary but like I said I'm a tweaker, and I've gotta say.... the Es20 may not be perfect but the PQ is far better than the ilo dvdr04... even in 4hr mode. On the other hand, I prefer dvd+rw
because ive got a bunch of them already. And the menus
have a few two many layers to wade through for basic functinality.Overall thats, a fair trade off cause the
picture quality is the most important feature for me. 4hr mode
looks as good as vhs tape, the images are sharp and contrast is good. If your comparing the Es20 to higher end units, you may not like it... but it functions much
like a vcr, if it your first unit thats cool. The other consideration for me is longevity. That remains to be
seen. With the rate of failure for electronic across the board,"that I've experienced". Id say, user reviews
are a consumers only protection. Cheers. |

I've been running this E20 over 2 years without mishap. The only times it has locked up were with a bad DVD-R, testing a DVD+R (without bitsetting), and when trying to use Memorex DVD-RAM discs (don't bother). It likes OptoDisc, Panasonic (of course), and FujiFilm DVD-RAM discs.
When used with a Panasonic computer drive, it makes editing easy. Using the non-cartridge discs, you can use a Toshiba drive to read them (but not a Plextor, have tried it).
I did finally start using pretty much only RAM discs for TV recording -- works like a 5GB HDD recorder.
The main thing is: It's still working after 2 years - when the cheapo Terapin VCD recorders that I started with lasted a brief period.

the panasonic dmr20 is a pile of crap. after a short while it will stop recording on the media which it previously recorded, givving a u11 error, it gets worse, the dvd ram media will not record or erase as it shows a disc protection error. i have had two as panasonic swapped out the first one. panasonic should hold there hands up and admit there is a design fault with this machine.
i will NEVER buy panasonic gear again! |

Whats any better than owning one of these recorders, well owning 2 DVD recorders, using the DMR-E20 and their older DMR-E10 is great for editing back and forth with the Ram Dics. plus using the Sampo 631CF DVD Player with the Serial Copy Mangement removed, backups are a breeze from any DVD's out there. Plays any VCD's or XVCD's I have made, up to about 3000 bitrate also.
Frys, Circuit city, best buy are selling this now for $499.
Would have given it a 10 if it would have had the 5.1 DD decorder built in it like the DMR-E10 does. |

as for the dvd player it has never burend a bad disk, wish it had regualer svcd support & a macrovision hack but other than that a very good unit I paid 1000 @ sears right when it came out over a year ago

| This is a fairy good DVD writer. I really like DVD-RAM media this drive uses. Writes on every disk type I tried. DVD-RAM (especially cartridge 9.6GB type) is a bit expensive, but you get two free disks with the recorder. No problems at all, except that when you cut out something from a recorded DVD it freezes for a sec when playing back (test version DMR-E was seamless!) Workin in pro audio and post business, I always found the quality very good. Flexible rec used for most disks. Unfortunately you cannot turn off menu on DVD-Rs, and the menu's design is a bit boring. |

Had am E20 for arund five months now, got a good deal £460.00.
Tried some Maxell discs (£5.00 each !!!) only 3 worked, then tried some cheap unbraded type discs from dvd-and-media ann have used over 50 not one has failed so far.
Bit puzzled about some of the comments here though,
1. 2 people say it does not have a DV/Firewire input, mine does on the front and i has auto dubbing from the Firewire works great with a cam corder.
2. One commnent says has menus bit only on ram, menus work on both dvd-r and ram on my machine.
The quality is great in 1 and 2 hour modes the four hour is a bit grainy but still watchable and great for tv recordings in ram still beats the old vcr.
My opinion is go and buy one, cant fault the machine except the way you have to enter titles it takes ages, i have now devised a system on my Philips pronto to give me a virtual keyboard rather than having to go left right up down just to title a disc.

Great DVD writer with good features.
Especially like the timeslip. Can start recording and then start watching at the same time, either from the beginig of the current recording or completely different recording.
Nothing bad to say about it. |

This is a pretty good unit. I purchased it almost a year ago and for the most part haven't been disappointed.
Unlike other users, every DVD-R media I've bought works fine. I've recently been using PRINCO bulkpacks and haven't had any problem. I used to use COMPUSA brand discs, until I found cheaper priced discs. The same with any CD-R. Recently, I've been using PENGO bulkpacks. This unit seems to have trouble playing SVCD's. Sometimes they will work if you do not fast forward for rewind.
The 1 and 2 hour recording modes offer the best clarity. Anything above that you can see distortions, especially in the black parts of the screen.
The main draw-backs to this unit is that most of the features are geared toward using the DVD-RAM disc. With these discs you can edit out commercials, shorten scenes, move scenes, etc. You can't do this with DVD-R.
The other draw-back is the built in Macrovision protection. I've managed to get around this using a DVD Decoder, purchase from Lik-Sang.com for $39.99. This little baby took care of the copyright protection on some DVD's and almost all VHS. I coupled this with a Sima "Video CopyMaster" (purchased from Best Buy, $49.99) and have been able to copy all VHS and DVD's that I rent from the store. |

Got the E20 for £300 about 5 weeks ago. Absolutley love this machine !!!. Everything Panasonic make is superb and once again I am more than pleased with another excellent product. Love DVD-Ram, the editing features are superb. Have tried 3 makes of DVD-R: Mirror (8 out of the 10 tried worked, 2 kept throwing up U11 code) Office World own brand (10 out of 10 tried worked) and Data Safe Generation 4 (10 out of 10 tried worked). Time slip is excellent and the quality of recordings are great. I have just got Digital Freeview TV and in 2 hour mode quality is nearly upto original DVD quality. Have copied a few DVD's via a Panasonic A360 with Macrovision disabled. Records single layer films perfectly, but have trouble with recording dual layer DVD's layer changes as it makes the player stop recording !!! (I think maybe my A360's mod chip is going potty as it keeps saying cannot play this type of disc when playing DVD's). Other than that the only faults are the slowish load times of DVD's and the slightly noisy drive mechanism. Overall 10 out of 10.

First off, I should say that I am not an audio/video expert by any stretch of the imagination. I bought this machine so I would never have to use another VCR. I work nights and record all the television shows that I would miss otherwise, and I went through 3 VCRs in about 10 months. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to, I guess. I finally got fed up and decided to find a replacement.
I paid $499 (U.S.) for mine, and after using it for over a month I am very pleased with the machine’s performance. The picture quality (in SP mode) is as good as the original broadcast. LP mode is a bit fuzzier, but it’s not distracting. You really have to look closely and compare LP to SP to notice much difference. I don’t hesitate at all to record in LP (unless I’m recording something I want to keep around. If I’m recording any old tv show that I’m going to erase anyway, LP mode is fine).
Like I said, I bought this machine to replace my VCR. It has editing features (for DVD-RAM) that I will probably never use. As mentioned in other reviews, the remote control is a bit unwieldy, but you get used to it. Timer recording has been straightforward and easy to program. I have been using the same DVD-RAM disc (Panasonic brand) since day one with no trouble. As far as DVD-R, I have only used Memorex, which are sort of pricey, but they work well.
Bottom line: I would buy this machine again, although I would like to have the newer (more expensive) model with the built-in hard drive. You can’t even compare this thing to a VCR. It just blows it away. Obviously, the picture quality is superior, but one thing I’ve really noticed is the increase in sound quality. I put a tape in the VCR the other day, and right away I thought “that sounds like crap.” Once you get used to DVD quality, everything else is garbage.
WHAT’S GOOD:
Sound and picture quality
Reliability has been perfect
DVD-RAM format is like having a small-capacity hard drive
Simultaneous record and playback
Bye-bye VCR!
WHAT’S NOT-SO-GOOD:
Be prepared to spend some time studying the manual.
I really can’t think of anything else to complain about. The only problem I’ve ever had was due to the Auto Clock set feature. One day I got home from work and discovered that my timer recordings had not been recorded, but they were still scheduled. After a little investigation, I learned that the date had somehow been set back one day. I ran the Auto Clock set several times, and the date was still set a day behind. I don’t know if this is a glitch in the machine or a glitch in the Auto Clock setting system, which is somehow broadcast with PBS signals. Once you use the Auto Set feature, it updates itself every day, which is how mine got screwed up. To make sure this doesn’t happen again, I set the clock manually.
I have to admit I was initially reluctant to shell out $499 for this recorder when you can buy a VCR for 50 bucks, but I’m glad I did. This machine is worth every penny, and the price will probably be dropping soon, as this model is already somewhat outdated. Unless you’re a professional with a true need for top-of-the-line equipment, you can’t go wrong with the DMR-E20.

I have to begin by saying that I am nowhere *near* as critical of the LP speed as some of the people who have posted here. I have found that at viewing distance (approx. 7-8 feet) on my Sony Wega 32" TV, I can't tell the difference between an LP picture and the original. Perhaps my eyes are not as critical as some people's, but I find the LP mode to be superior to S-VHS, which I've been using since 1992. As good as S-VHS is, I could always tell I was watching a recording. I can't say the same for LP.
The EP speed is almost useless. I say "almost" because I found that I was able to get away with recording programs that contained a lot of old black-and-white footage. Aside from that, I've never used it. I will say this though. If Panasonic found some way of making the EP speed the equivalent of the LP, it would be a real coup on their part.
I bought the E20 because of my good experiences with the Panasonic E10. I keep the two machines connected, so that I can record a program on DVD-RAM at XP or SP, chop out all the commercials, and dub to DVD-R in the SP or LP mode.
I've used a number of different DVD-R brands: Memorex, Ritek, Optodisc, Mitsui, and some off-brands. I've had mixed results with the off-brands. Some work and some don't. Strange to say, but I've recorded some off-brands on the E20, and when I try to play them back, I get pixel blocks about halfway through the disc. I eject the disk, put it in the E10, and it plays just fine. Go figure.
I had a problem with a Ritek disc which involved ejecting a partially recorded disc and later inserting it for additional recording, only to have the E20 refuse to read it. I didn't have too many Riteks, so I made it a point from then on do all my recordings on Ritek in a single session, i.e. I don't eject it until I've finalized.
The brand of disc I ultimately settled on is Optodisc. I get them from www.rima.com for $130 for a 100-disc spindle, though I see the price has since dropped. I'd had such good luck using the Optodisc DVD-RAM disc on the E10 that I decided their DVD-R discs were worth a try. So far I haven't had problem one with Optodisc.
I bought a Prospec DVE-773 from Japan Direct (www.japan-direct.com) for about $360. (It's now selling for $229.) I plug it between my Pioneer DV-700 LD/DVD player and the E20, and it kills the copy protection of every DVD (and VHS) I've tried so far. Between the Prospec DVD-773 and Netflix...well, I suppose you can deduce the rest.
I see that A&E/The History Channel is starting to issue some of their programs on DVD+R. My next order of business will be to order one and see how it plays in the E20.

I find the E20 to be OK in the one hour mode. The two hour mode is very grainy and flickery. A bit rate of 4.5 is just not good enough to bother with. I am hoping the HS2 has better quality in the two hour mode. I could never figure out why they would put a variable bit rate function if you cant get a little more time out of it. many movies are 2 hours and 10 minutes.
No Firewire in this machine or Optical audio out.
Princo DVDRs seem to do good. I hve not tried the Ram functions.I would appreciate anyone who had a E20 and now has a HS2 to let me know if the quality of the video encoding is any better.

This little beauty works fine for me with all brands of DVDR I've tested, even cheap Bulkpaq ones. I fed 10 to it, and it worked fine with every one.
No problems with any CD media either, including the cheapest of the cheap.
No SVCD compatability at all as far as I can see, but it does play anything MPEG-1 based I've tried, including some high-bitrate XVCD and KVCD discs.
If anyone ever does find a way to disable macro and/or perform a region hack, PLEASE let me know :-)

Useful and interesting description of the inside. As the new DMR-HS2 has a hard disk, I asked Panasonic if the E20 could be upgraded to include one. I wasn't surprised when they said no.
I still wonder though. As there is provision for a slave drive, that leaves the operating system and remote. |

Well I have posted a comment here before, but I thought I would pass this information on.
Got a Blank DVD-R stuck in the machine and after 1 hour of trying to eject it would not come out.
So with a little background in electronics I decided to take this machine apart to get the disc out, here is what I found out while inside the machine, by the way got the disc out machine back together and works perfect.
It has some type of computer motherboard inside
Has one Panasonic Dolby digital decoder chip
Has one Panasonic DTS Decoder chip
Has what looks like some type of CPU chip also
what looks like 4 video Ram Type chips, explains the delay burning the source material onto DVD's.
It also has a DVD-R/Ram Burner in it just like one for your computer has a IDE hook up from the Burner over to Motherboard, power connector just like in a computer, even has the pins for Master and Slave and hookup for your audio for a computer(not Used) also. Its mounted in the case very closely like in would be in a Computer CPU tower.
Be interesting to know if you could disconnect this Burner and replace it with a DVD-R/RW or a DVD+R/RW Burner and to see if the operating system that panasonic is using would see it.
The door in front that pulls down when you eject is not part of the burner, its a seperate door made onto the front panel.
Oh yes the reason the blank got stuck, had a small scratch on disc that I did not notice, so my advice would be not to put any blanks in that are not in perfect condition.
Also I have a Daewoo DVD player that on display can show what MBPS the disc is playing, here is the breakdown.
Its a variable bitrate on the DVD-R's you record, here are the ranges of about 10 discs I tried.
1 hour - 6.5 to 9.2
2 hour - 3.2 to 5.0
4 hour - 1.2 to 2.5
The 2 hour mode is in the range for your typical single layered commerical pressed disc which ranged from 3.0 to 6.2.
The 1 hour mode is actually a little higher than the dual layered pressed commerical discs, highest I got on a Dual layered was 8.9
I have used TDK, COMPusa DVD-R's and now on my 4th 25 pack of Primediscs that I got for $1.60 each and they look just as good as the TDK's. |

| I have been very happy with the DMR-E20. It performs well and is fairly easy to use once you figure out the remote. I have tried several types of media: Verbatim, Memorex, Tdk, and even generic CompUSA discs, they all have worked well. As others have stated it will not copy Macrovision or CGMS protected discs directly, but if you use a "Black Box" etc then it will. I have a region free, Macrovision free hacked DVD Player (Apex AD-1100W) so I have not had that problem as yet. With newer DMR models coming out you should be able to find the DMR-E20 at a discounted price. |

I purchased this to compliment my video business and hope these comments will save you the "grief" I have been through.
The DMR-E20 is an excellent choice and does what the manufacturer says it will do. Although it does not have firewire, the quality is excellent and the slight loss of the firewire advantage probably will not be noticed by most end viewers. The one and two hour settings are preferred.
The media choice is another issue. I tried spindle packs of Princo, Legacy and other generic media. What a let down. Princo delivered approximately 10% reliability when played on a typical users DVD player; the rest I had to redo on other media. Something about the Panasonic writer I'm told.
After much soul searching and experimentation, I settled on Verbatim 4.7 2x speed General Part # 94077. The quality issuse is much more important than saving a few bucks on media.
100% satisfaction! The combination of the DMR-E20 and Verbatim will let you sleep nights.
Enjoy your Panasonic. |

Fantastic peice of kit, using a home theatre pc as source so no problems with macro,
tried Bulkpaq media £0.43 ea and had problems would either bomb out during recording, refuse to record, not finalize or the finished disk would not play completely in any player.
Swaped for datasafe £0.89 and no problems.
To ensure perfect quality , get the length of movie say 87 mins and set up the source dvd paused, then set the timer in FR mode to start recording 2 mins from current time, set the record time to the duration of the movie. This will maxamize the bit rate and fill the disk. A movie less than 2 hrs and more than 1 will set a bit rate higher than just recording on SP, so the copy will look gorgeous.
Can also be used to get very near SP quality if the source is
When the unit comes out of standby and starts to record hit play on the source and leave it. It will turn off when finished.
