Bought this for bedrooom usage mainly for testing home made DVDs using computer/DVD recorder as well as playing commercial DVDs. Mine is the Mk2 version, out of Asda and was priced at a modest £29.97.
What an absolute bargain!! Cannot fault any aspect of playback in sound or vision. It loses one point for build quality (which isn't too bad but could be better), but at this price there is nothing to lose by buying one.

Best bargain ever, does what it says on the box (and More). Plays Bulk Paq, Infiniti, DataWrite, Datasafe, and some real unbranded cheapos in + and -.

| I bought this when I saw the price purely as a CD/MP3 player. I connected it up in seconds and for such a cheap bit of kit the sound really does deliver!. The menu is very basic, just choose the MP3 folder you want to listen to and select enter, then click on the song you want to hear first and off it goes. Sound is spectacular, and so far I'm just using phono leads! |

Played everything I have thrown at it so far, apart from a badly scratched VCD which it did its utmost to play, and it got further than any of my other low price range DVD players.
Put in a CD rom computer catalogue for PC World Business direct and it recognised and played the jpegs as a slide show - no problem
Must be one of the best value players on the UK market.
I have the Mk 2 version (no endorsments on the box from any magazines) and wish I had bought this last year when it was more expensive than the Thomson model I got which no longer plays DVD+R.
Superb - should really be priced at least 3 times what it is!

This is the new mk2 version of the 1002.
MUCH slimmer than old version, much nicer looking.
Functions exactly like old model but far more tolerant of DVDR media.
Old 1002 region hack works fine.

A Good all round player, has some trouble with seamless branching, Abyss SE pauses for 5 seconds every time the seamless branching happens.
Same with the new Star Wars, after the opening scrawl the player pauses for 2 seconds.
Other than that not too bad. Well worth the money |

Decent DVD player - more reliable with DVD+R than the 'other' Pacific (the one with the blue LED bar lights.)
No good for music CD's though - not sure if it's just this player, or all, but there is a slight 'click' every 10 secs or so on (original) CD's. Not faulty CD's, amp, speakers, cables, etc - must be the player.

Just got this player today from Asda and at now at only £35 a real steal.
Not had time for excessive testing but played everything do far DVD-R SVCD VCD MP3 CDR, would highly reccomend this player and if you don't like it you can of course always return it, no questions asked. |

Bought the Pacific 1002W from ASDA (£34.75) about a week ago, what an outstanding player. Plays all my DVD-/+ R RW, except for my mirror platinum DVD+R discs, love the MP3 on DVD support!!
I originally had the Pacific 1001 also from ASDA, took it back as it had difficulty reading some of my DVD-R (Mitsubishi) discs, I had to retry abour 5 - 6 times, to stop the "bad disc" error from appearing. I put these same discs into the 1002W and they worked straight away.
I can't recommend this player enough, go and get one!! |

This is a marvellous player.
I have a umax yamada 6100 which plays more but that is a bit fussier sometimes.
This plays all dvds thrown at it even with labels on - yes i had NO problems as i virtually always use labels!
How anyone can say bulkpaq orange or datawrire red doesn't work is beyond me!
All dvd-r i have tried work on this except dts sound but the picture plays.
Stunning player - just needs divx/xvid to make it perfect.
Only problem is there is no 'auto' for playing back ntsc or pal. It must be user selected which can make for jerky playback.. Picky yes but it is virtually standard in the uk otherwise! |

An excellent piece of equipment and apparently now Britain's best-selling DVD player. I can't recommend it highly enough. Neat size and cool retro 1980's styling which reminds me of a JVC VCR I had in 1981.
I bought my first 1002W from ASDA about six months ago and haven't found a brand of CD-R it won't play. I use multisession discs a lot for testing short clips on TV while editing and just keep adding to the same CD-R until full.
I just bought my second 1002W two weeks ago. The first has a slight fault -- some interference when connected via the S-video socket. But this is not an issue for me (so haven't returned it yet, and may not ever) and there is no such fault on the second unit.
If ASDA started selling a similar DVD recorder it would kill the market for VCRs overnight. I'm hoping a future player will support MPEG4/DIVX/WMV. |

| Having brought a DVD recorder for my PC in order to transfer my home video's onto DVD, and then found that my old DVD player would not play them back, I was in the market for a decent player at a reasonable price. I usually prefer to avoid the cheaper models, but in this case I've not been disappointed. My DVD+RW's work fine, the picture quality is good, I've seen none of the earlier reported issues. Basically I'm well pleased and all this for less than 40 quid. Hopefully they will come out with a similarly priced DVD recorder soon and I can dispense with my VCR. |

I've had this player about 30mins (£40 from Asda) and already I am well impressed.
Dead easy to set up - free scart lead included. PLays all my media (DVD-R DVD+R VCD and MP3) WITHOUT ANY FUSS.
Hacked in seconds using the 1,3,6 .... code listed earlier in this post.
If you're looking for a DVD Player to buy cheaply - this is the one. |

Asda for £44.87. Bought this to replace my now failing Acoustic DVD551. Such support for a cheap player and picture quality better than my acoustic. Bought one today from Asda £40 1year warranty as I was sick of my samsung dvd235 (2 month old) not being able to decide if it plays svcd or not and didn`t like mixed ratio dvd-r compilations I have made from music vids and the total lack of features on it such as a simple goto command (very good original DVD player though). This plays ALL the svcd`s that the samsung won`t, plays all my vcd`s many of which are old (2 year plus) and plays my music vid compilations. CDR media is mainly datawrite and medianca burned at 40x on LG CDR with nero 5.5. dvd-r media is bulqpac orange or datasafe burned at both 2x and 4x on pioneer 106 with nero 6. I was impressed with the amount of features on such a low price player, the menu preview on complitaion scvd`s is super.
I only marked this player down as it looks like something from the 80`s and the remote has room for improvement, but for £40 you can`t expect perfection. |

| Plays pretty much everything, like others have said it is noisy with dvd-r but only at the start, also seems to have some problems with skipping near the outer edge. So I deliberately do not use the full capacity, say 100-200 meg unused, and when backing up files I stick a dummy file like an avi which it can't play as the first file, gets around the knocking sound. Also noticed some menus came up invisible when resized with instant copy (still worked though), learnt not to touch the menus. |

| Just got a 1002W from ASDA to try and play BULKPAQ DVD-Rs burnt on my optorite drive as my current cyberhome 402 kept freezing toward end of films-found this does exactly the same thing in the same places. I know it's not the discs as they work fine on other people's DVD players. This seems a lot like my cyberhome repackaged-the menus are very similar as is the multi-region hack |
