I agree with the other reviews that this player has great video quality and features for the price. I would like to see support for AAC audio and the latest version of Divx. I can't think of any other weaknesses, this is a great player. Contrary to what DVD man wrote, the upscaling limitation to the DVI output is not a flaw. The DVD consortium has asked all manufacturers to limit upscaling to the DVI and HDMI outputs when playing commercial DVD's because of copyright issues. The Zenith DVB318 and LG DV7832NXC manufactured before Dec 2003 are the only two players I'm aware of that permit component upscaling. I'd like to see a hack that enables component upscaling because my HD television doesn't have a DVI or an HDMI input.

This is a quote I got by email from Oppo Support after complaining about picture freezes with both movies and my own recorded material:
If the discs are DVD-R discs, then this could be a compatability issue with these discs. We are most compatbile with DVD+R media.

Additionally, if your films have been backed up using a DVD Recorder, you may also experience these issues due to the VR format not being properly decodable on the DV-970HD at this time.

Best Regards,

also,
As both DVD players utilize the same decoding chipset, the errors in the DV-970HD are also present in the OPDV971H. We are investigating this issue, but do not know when a release will be made.

also,
I played a DVD that I bought ("To Catch A Thief") and it turned out lousy. Perhaps there were some settings that I needed to make on the Oppo unit but I felt I had to be a technician to do it (gamma setting?).

This DVD player has played everything I've thrown at it. One problem I had was with an xvid film that had switchable subtitles that didn't show up and showed a kind of halo. Other xvid/divx films with switchable subtitles work fine so I suspect this could be a disc problem.

The only question I have is has anyone tried playing mkv files? Does anyone know if this player will support this film format?

Got tired of my Phillips DVp642 bulking at alot of my stuff downloaded and burned on my PC's. I used my DVD players to copy downloaded stuff to VHS just so I can watch up to any part I want and toss the tape aside and come back to it a week later and pick up where I left off after having played 27 other vhs tapes. I mainly didn't want to have to burn complete DVD's all the time and liked the idea of being able to play DVIX straight up. Well this OPPO takes just about everything I throw at it. Ignoring the Phillips, I have a Cyberhome and ilo (DVR) and play an awful lot of things. The Cyberhome you can tell when it hangs unless you are monitoring it, and it will hang and yet play the same thing if you skip to it, and ilo is a step better but still misses a lot. I've played AVI's and MPEG's straight up on the OPPO with no problems. I don't even bother checks the codec anymore I just try it first, and know about 90 percent of the time it'll play it. Right now is playing something that was jumping like crazy on the ilo and is smooth as can be on the oppo. Shipped direct from manufacturer, included both a dvi and hdmi cable (I only requested the H but I can use the dvi with an older monitor as long as I got it for free! Well worth the money if you playback from stuff you create on your own PC.

Excellent DVD player. Picture quality over HDMI is simply outstanding. It has played everything I've put in it. Even discs that would not play on any other domestic DVD player worked fine. In recent reviews this machine is supposedly better than all machines this side of $3k. The player is well built and has some great little touches like a flexible DVD tray that would be nearly impossible to break.
There are some issues that still require fine tuning, such as the picture is slightly to one side playing PAL discs on some displays. But firmware upgrades are frequent and Oppo listens to their customers so any issues are usually resolved quickly.
My only gripe is the small buttons on the remote and their layout. I would have preferred a black machine too but the silver looks OK.

I've been using this player with a low-cost Samsung LE-27T51B LCD TV via DVI and I'm very impressed.
The upscaling is great, the DivX & Xvid compatibility could be a little bit better. (bigger than 1,2Gb files won't play, subtitles could be better alligned)
The sound of Oppo (DTS, DD PL II) is better than I expected.

Excellent picture quality, and the ability to play almost any file type, on almost any media drew me to the Oppo. I have not been disappointed.

I have played mp3, XVID, DIVX, MPEG1, and MPEG2 files off of CD and DVD. I have also played SVCD, VCD, and (of couse) DVD's. The upconversion through DVI is excellent, although it's component out is not as good. Picture and Sound quality is far beyond my expectations, even for a $200 player.

Now if only it had a firmware that allowed you to "bypass" DVD usage restrictions...

I am very happy with it and have it connected to projector with DVI cable.

Only a few problems
- Tray too soft as I feel it could break
- was skipping and/or stopping when playing Fujifilm 8x DVD-R disc. It happened on 2 copies of the same disc. Will make onother copy and try out.

Other than that it looks goreat and sound just as good, with the bonus of being able to convert.

bye...

Comments:
I bought the unit directly from the manufacturer's website and it included the promised DVI/HDMI cable.

Plays everything I've tried so far including Divx 5 with ACM audio that my Philips dvp642 chokes on. Also
plays WMA audio CDs. A nice bonus.

I'm using it with a Sony Wega 27" HDTV. It's 4x3 but has a 16x9 mode for wide screen input. 1.85:1 widescreen DVDs look best.

Things I like:
Region free remote hack works exactly as noted in the comments here.

1080i output is fine!! Even divx files look good
at 1080i and a quality DVD looks fantastic when upconverted.

You don't have to make multiple selections playing divx with external subtitle files like with the Philips dvp642. Just select the divx file and hit the subtitle button when the video starts to play if you want subtitles. Very intuitive. :)

Audio delay setting is nice if you happen to have a divx you want to watch once and erase where the audio
is out in front of the video a bit.

Video output options include a "wide squeeze" setting
so that those home made burns formatted at 4x3 with letterboxing that don't look right in full screen, letterbox, or wide screen mode can be smushed back into shape. (You give up a bit of screen real estate but if
it's a good quality video you can zoom one step without much distortion.)

Minor annoyances:

The disc tray contributes to the sleek look of the unit by being machined from a chunk of plastic. Works fine but you sort of have to hook a finger in the disc hole and pluck the disc out. Just a bit awkward.

When first setting up the unit with DVI/HDMI connection
you have to hit the DVI button on the remote about a dozen times before your TV wakes up and shows the setup screen. A bit disconcerting as you start to suspect you have a dud video cable.. then it kicks in.

Once you get the setup screen you're golden though. I just selected the screen resolution I wanted and used the defaults for everything.

In a nutshell: So far I'm very happy I bought this player. I was using a Philips 724 DVD player with progressive scan and component cables. If a DVD looked good at 480p it looks great in this player at 1080i or
720p. So far everything is just as I expected from reading the reviews and comments.

Unbelievable picture quality on my HD LCD display. The drive mechanism is completely inaudible during play, which is also nice. The remote is something of a weak point, but it doesn't bother me now that I'm used to it.

The customer support is truly incredible, as others have mentioned. This company actually listens when you make suggestions for improving the firmware!

I use this player to play MP3 files off of DVD frequently. The sound quality is great, and the interface is ok, but there is still some work to be done in this regard. My comments to Oppo have been well received and I am confident that they will continue to expand the player's features in this regard.

Unlike other players I've dealt with, this one has had no problems playing Divx/Xvid files. In fact, it plays simply everything I've thrown at it! No matter what format the disc that you insert is, this player will figure out some way to let you watch it. I love it.

Been using this player for about 2 weeks now, pretty constantly, and have been pretty damn impressed so far.

Lets get one thing straight first, if your not interested in using the DVI output on this player, look elsewhere. It's perfectly fine through Component, S-Video and Composite (though the Component lacks the upscaling ability), but that's not what this player is all about. This player is about hooking up your DVD Player directly, digitally through the DVI and upscaling at the player end to get the best picture quality possible from the SD source on HDTV sets. There are plenty of Component Progressive Scan players about, you may wish to look for one more focused on that.

With that out of the way, the DVI output is excellent. There's no HDMI unfortunately, thought they bundle a free DVI-HDMI cable if you order through the official page.
Upscaling modes include 480p, 540p, 720p and 1080i. Choose the best one for your set, but for most of us with 1280x720 or 1366x768 sets, that'll be 720p.

Picture quality is superb for both PAL and NTSC DVD's. Good upscaling, good deinterlacing, just all-round hits the mark there. A recent firmware update has fixed most of the earlier complaints.

DivX/XviD playback is as standard nowerdays, but I was impressed at how well it coped with this! Much better than my old Cello DVD8105, no complaints with the playback quality, and support for subtitles and multiple audio tracks, as well as standard Mpeg files.
No support for HD files, nor OGM/MKV, though that's really uncommon.
Conforms to the 'DivX Home Theatre' specifiation, though you can use any standard Mpeg4-based AVI file with this. Also supports VCD, SVCD, JPEG, MP3, WMA, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD.

Plenty of options for sound output. As usual, support for Dolby Digital and DTS through the optical output, and also features a Coaxial for older systems. Separate 5.1 analog outputs also avaliable, as well as traditional Stereo Red/White outputs downmixing the 5.1. You need to use one of these options to get sound for the DVI usage, the player comes with a basic stereo cable for this, though you may have your own setup.

Mine was Region-Free and Macrovision free out of the box, though you may need to use the region hack. No HDCP here, so you can use it on non-HDCP sets. Supports forcing PAL or NTSC onto your DVD's. Firmware upgradable, with regular updates on their site.

Bottom line is, if you got a brand new HDTV, and want to make the most of your screen, but don't want to have to blow a months wage on a super-expensive player, you can't go wrong with this.

Note - A player has emerged in Europe called the BBK DV-971H. This appears to be the same player, rebranded.

With the most recent BIOS update, the DVD setup menu has much more control over color/display settings. This is very helpful when I have an occasional rip of a movie that has the colors skewed.
It has played everything I had put in it.
I use coax digital out, and it works perfectly.
They always answer my questions if I email them, and it's not a BS automated answer, it's a real human answering me.
I read that this little puppy rated better in Picture Quality than other players MUCH more expensive. The only DVD player on hometheaterhifi.com that did better, was a $3,000 Denon system. For $200, you just can't beat the quality (on DVI, because no upconverting on component).

This is a good player. Basically what everybody's said, but it still suffers from the same problem that my philips dvp642/37, which is primarily for foreign anime. The text still gets cut off, and the only other option I see in fixing this is to zoom out 1/2, but in that case, the picture and text will be too small to watch and read.

Recieved teh DVD player yesterday and it looks like just what I was looking for. Tho someone posted that it was region free out of the box, mine was not, so I had to put it in region 0.

Took me a second to figure out that I had to hit "DVI" on the black remote to get it to switch modes...so pressing that a couple times put it up to 1080i.

One odd note: the companies website http://www.oppodigital.com/ mentions that the lastest firmware is version OP971-8-0628 releases on June 29, 2005. I wanted to check the firmware on my unit to see if I needed to do the upgrade, and it turns out that my unit has a higher number than the websites most recent version. My unti says its firmware is version OP971-9-0628B

Not sure what the changes have been.

One thing that is unfortunate about this unit is the manual's lack of information on some of the features. For example, what is the TrueLife setting?

A glance at the more info section of the website for the unit explains some of the features, including TrueLife. Unfortunately, some of the features described on that page, don't seem to be able to turn off. The page on the site talks about Cross Color Suppression, Directional Correlational Deinterlacing, Film Mode or Inverse 3:2 and 2:2 Pulldown, TrueLife Detail Enhancement, Noise Reduction, and Aspect Ratio Conversion. The only two items that seem to be able to be turned off are TrueLife and Cross Color Suppression.
Would be nice to be able to trun off Noise Reduction. And for some reason, if you have TrueLife turned off, you can't select the Cross Color Suppression item...it just stays listed in whatever state it was last.

All that being said, this seems like a great unit. My previous player was the DVP642 from Philips, a player which I wouldn't recommend for anyone with an HDTV.

Comments:
I just wanted to correct the previous two posters glaring incorrect info on this player.

First, it's region-free out of the box. There's no need to perform any hack

Second, it does NOT to 480P over component. That is a known defect of this machine. It performs 480P / 720P and 1080i ONLY over DVI. Component performs only 480i.

I am not sure where those two posters received their very wrong info from, but I wanted to set the record straight, and hopefully they will do their homework a little better next time.

Media Compatibility: This player so far played everything I put in it. Great compatibility. I have tried DVD video on pressed DVD, DVD+R and DVD-R, VCD on pressed CD and CD-R, SVCD on CD-R, Divx/Xvid on CD-R and DVD+R, MP3 on CD-R, JPEG on CD-R and DVD-R.

System Compatibility: Tried NTSC and PAL DVD and VCD with the video output going to an NTSC TV. The player automatically recognizes the system and converts PAL to NTSC.

Region Compatibility: Tried region 0, 1 and 6. No problem playing each.

Picture Quality: Great picture quality when connected with a Samsung CRT HDTV with component video. This player does 480p over component with HDTV up-conversion using a Faroudja DCDi chipset. I also tried it with a computer LCD monitor using DVI connection at 720p. The picture quality is even better.

Sound: I used the optical output and my home theater received did the decoding. It worked very well. The player has both optical and coaxial for digital audio output, and stereo and 5.1 for analog audio output with built-in Dolby and DTS decoder. I have not tried the analog audio.

Build quality: This is a solid player. The DVD tray can be bent without breaking, a major plus for me because I have small children in the house. The video and audio connectors are gold-plated.
