I forgot to add that the 970(as well as all Oppo's) play NTSC or PAL DVD's and can be made region free with the remote hack:
1.Select 'Setup'
2.Then enter 9210 on the keypad(a secret window will popup)
3.Then enter 0 and hit 'Enter' |

I have the 970 hooked up to a 42" plasma using HDMI and the picture is superb(compared to my old Toshiba using component). The Oppo 970 is a great DVD player for TV's <50",if your TV is over 50" get the 981.
Where I think the 970 stands out is when used as an audio player, this machine is truly audiophile quality:
Supports 5.1 ch DVD-Audio & SACD,HDCD,RAW audio-only output,DVD-MP3.
Oppo also has great support whether it's on the phone or their frequent firmware updates. |

I love almost every aspect of this DVD player. The upconversion to 1080i (or 720p) are great, preserved the screen proportions that don't make the actor look thin, detail & colors are vibrant even with low bitrate xvid files, handles lipsync problems quite well, and price $150 at Amazon with free shipping is reasonable.
The only two minor complaints I have are the tray is too flimsy and not being able to automatically stretch 4:3 source to 16:9 TVs.

I heard so many good ratings for this DVD player so I ordered it last night and will test it out.
I can see already this play will out preform $1000 DVD-players in terms of picture and sound quality. It looks like their support service is execellent as well.
I was reading this article and couldn't believe it. What a great dvd player:

Tray is a little flimsy feeling and doesn't come all the way out of the player.
Access to front-panel memory card readers and USB port is very nice with flip cover.
Front display doesn't have a dimmer feature (has a front display at all though).
Can play DVD-Audio and SACD format audio discs.
Is actually DivX certified and can play DivX VoD files. |

I have been using the OPPO DV-970HD for a couple of weeks now and I am very impressed. The player has read every type of writable media that I have thrown at it with no problems. DivX/XviD compatibility is the best that I have yet seen in a standalone player. It will not play high definition files (HR-HDTV captures) but I have never encountered a standalone player that could. It stutters a bit on divx files that have a maxed out bitrate (6000 kbps) but other than that it performs wonderfully.
I am a bit dissapointed with the performance of the player's USB port. Although it will read DivX/XviD files from a flash drive, the files are unwatchable as playback is very choppy and the audio is out of sync. The same files play flawlessly off of a DVD+/-RW or CD-RW disc.
The image quality is also very impressive. I am using the HD upscaling feature via an HDMI connection and everything looks wonderful. Lines are incredibly smooth compared to other upscalers that I have seen and it upscales 4x3 video without distorting the image to fill the screen. This means that you can watch standard 4x3 TV shows on DVD and take advantage of the upscaling feature. It will also upscale DivX/XviD files in addition to regular DVDs.
A final feature that I like is that if you are playing a non-anamorphic widescreen disc, you can have the upscaling turned on and zoom in using the player to make the image fit your screen. Other players force 4x3 images into 16x9 mode or maintain the 4x3 image when zooming, making it difficult to view a film in the proper aspect ratio or make it fit a 16x9 TV.
Overall, this is the best player that I have ever owned and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who plays a lot of DivX/XviD files and/or is in the market for an affordable upscaling player with HDMI out. |
