Comments:
I have been looking for a dvd player that could support xvid, divx, svcd, vcd, mp3, mpeg, and dvd-r's without freezing or issues. Plus I wanted one that could play multiple xvid on dvd-r. I went to circuit city and tried many divx certified dvd players and many showed no disk on xvid and the ones that did play xvid didn't play svcd/vcd. I didn't have a chance to test the Onkyo sp404 before I bought it, but after 2 hours of trying different players I just bought it and wished it was a good one. It also has the HDMI(cable not included) which I need the HDMI or so I thought.
My setup
Onkyo-SP404
JVC I'Art 65 inch HDTV
JVC receiver(5.1)
Altec Lansing medium towers
BIC rear surround bookshelf speakers
Profile center channel
MTX 12 inch powered sub
The SP404 US models do not have a optical out only regular and single digital out. Supplied in the box are standard rca cables.
I am no expert at dvd players but I feel I have a huge amount of experience with playing xvid, divx and dvd-r videos and I have been through many dvd players in the past 4 years.
The Onkyo is the hands down best player I have tried, so far had played 100% of my xvid files on cd-r and dvd-r, I even on purpose picked out some discs I could not play in other players that did play xvid and they even played perfect, no skipping, freezing or sound issues at all. This dvd player is the hands down champion of multi format dvd players. Picture quality is excellent and it auto converts to 1080i(there is a setting in the menu to set it so you don't have to change it every time. I have both connected on my tv(component and HDMI), because I don't like the surround sound on when I am trying to sleep and the digital coaxial cable is setup to play through the receiver and the component is to tv). I can do side by side comparisons this way also and the quality of picture in 1080i with the component is really close the the HDMI to the point the HDMI is not really even needed), does it well and the pciture quality is amazing. For some reason even the sound quality is better with this player over my Toshiba hdmi player. Also another feature that is rare in this price range is the options for picture adjustments for fine tuning the picture (sharpness, brightness, contrast, gamma, hue and chroma level). Plus options for surround sound systems setup. The remote is easy to see and layed out well. I would give the player a 10, but it doesn't have some of the latest things like usb etc and the dvd tray is a little flimsy. But is does support some odd formats that some don't like WMA.
Overall this is all I could ask for in a dvd player and I am very happy with it. I will add some more comments when I have used it for awhile. After playing 30+ xvid, dvd-r and svcd movies I have not had a single hang up or pixel issue which is great and I even had some movies play that I couldn't get any player to play. In the next few days I will download some test files from here and see what it can and cannot play.
