This machine will do pretty much as advertised. Region and protection encryption hacks worked like a charm for me.
The biggest drawback for me is that it is just not built to last. The power supply consists of a tiny module with no heat sinking and it operates plenty hot! My DP-315 as well as a DP-300 purchased at the same time both failed in operation in less than a year.
Customer service was as bad as I ever hope to encounter, but after several months and several emails I did get warranty repair and return of the units. The DP-300 still has heat issues and we have to keep a fan blowing across it when it is powered on or it will freeze up. It has been back in service for about 3 months. The DP-315 was just put back into service and has operated correctly for a week now.
If it weren't for the ease of hacking and quality of performance while it is working, I wouldn't rate it as highly. Treat these babies with kid gloves and keep them cool and they might last longer for you. |

Playback of my MP3s burned on CD-R and DVD+RW was OK. The display of file names (aka song names)on TV screen was truncated filenames to 12 characters. JPEG playback was good and allowed for rotation of images.
It played all the cheap brand of DVD media I've tried. I used Nero 6.3 to burn the movies from DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink.
For my needs, this is the best player I've owned yet.

| I do not recommend this unit if you intend to play DVD-R or DVD+R. DVD-Rs played like dirty discs and depending on the disc were playing with an occasional skip to a total freeze-have-to-turn-dvd-player-off situation. I tried a DVD+R to find out it could not be played at all. I even had couple of incidence when a regular DVD skipped. I tried the system reset offered as a troubleshoot to disc skipping with no success. I have even contacted Norcent customer support to find if there was a solution to be told that copied DVDs cannot be played - not that I referred to copied DVDs to my email to Norcent. On the positive side (perhaps why I give it a 2) the "Region Free" hack does work. Overall I am rather dissatified with this unit and I am looking to replace it soon. |

I know this system has PAL/NTSC conversion. Does this means this will work in PAL TV's too ? Are it can only convert PAL movies to NTSC or vice versa ?
I know this system is hackable..

This is basically just a post to confirm that their is a resolution for the skipping issue:
12. Why does my Norcent DVD player keep skipping or pausing?
This is usually solved by performing a system reset. First make sure that there isn’t any disk inside the player. Next, press the setup button located on the remote, and then scroll to Preference page or Custom Setup Page. In that menu you will see the Default setting; highlight that and then press Enter while on Reset or Read. This will restore the settings to the original configuration.
From the norcent website:
http://www.norcent.net/main/support_faq.asp#12
I plan on purchasing this unit for a member of my family soon. |

| I gave it a 2 because it worked wery well for every advertised function for 6 months. I let it sit unused for 3 months and found that it would no longer recognize a DVD when I tried it. It will play VCDs fine, but DVD-R, DVD+R, or the commercial DVDs will no longer play. For $50 it should last at least a year. Am working with Norcent to get unit repaired or replaced. |

| The Amazon user feedback posts are correct. This unit hangs/pauses at least once and typically 2-3 times/DVD. The remote has a very narrow range of angles so it requires some care in pointing. Other than this the DP-315 seems to work fine. |

The only drawbacks I've found for this player so far are no mpeg 1/2 ISO playback and 16x9 PAL playback isn't in correct ratio. The best thing about the player is the absolute perfect A/V synch on everything I've played in it, even high bitrate VCDs that haven't synched correctly in any other player I've ever tried (various Apex, Digix, Classic, Panasonic, Sony and Toshiba models). Discs that stutter and freeze in other players play better with only minor problems or perfectly in this one. After a long day of testing it's still cool to the touch.
It plays PAL discs, but the output is NTSC only. MP3 playback was OK, but it truncated filenames to 12 characters and did randomly rename some files to MP3001 or MP3053, etc even though the original filenames were no different than the truncated ones. JPEG playback was good and allowed for rotation of images. Procedure for simultaneous MP3 and JPEG playback from the same disc is explained in the manual, but I didn't try it.
It's played every brand of DVD media I've tried - Fujifilm DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CompUSA DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, Ritek G04 DVD-R, K Hypermedia DVD-R and DVD-ON DVD+RW. Burned mostly with Nero Ultra 6 from DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink.
For my needs, this is the best player I've owned yet. |
