| This played everything I ever put in it but now its shot. Most dvds being commercial or burned just spin and don't start and when they do start to play, will eventually hiccup and pause after 30 min or so. I got my moneys worth though, Id buy again if they were around. |

Like Joey J, I was anxious to find a cheapie player with versatility to handle home-made VCD and SVCD with a variety of CD-R media. Bought two units today at Wal-Mart, who in Canada, has them on sale.
Works with all formats I tried, including VCD and SVCD, an audio CD and of course a full-length DVD of a commercial movie.
With the demise of the VCD compatibility of the Apex players (AD 1100W and AD 1200 both sought in vain for the last week at many outlets who have only the new, VCD-stripped functionality).
These are for gifts so we can share family picture albums (converted to VCD) as well as archived episodes of several TV series that we enjoy.
The price turned out to be much lower than for the Apex models, at least with the advertised sale price that went into effect Sat, Oct 19. Thanks to afore-mentioned review, I had the confidence to pick up these units right away. At the local store the pile was shrinking every moment, so I'd advise potential purchasers to act quickly in case the stock is limited.
We'll check out the rest of the promised functionality after the gift recipients have a chance to exercise their new equipment!
P.S. I'd written a letter to Apex customer service and wonder if they'll reply, saying they might not be aware of how many customers have bought theirs relying on the VCD functionality and the broad CD-R compatibility, while overlooking the shabby constructiuon, appalling quality control, problems with non-functioning disc trays, dark picture and highly variable sound volume. Suggested without VCD the market will shrivel up real fast. And I was about to buy three of them, had they not dropped VCD support.
The advice gleaned from this site and other usenet messages, recommended buying Apex only from a "full returns accepted, no questions asked" dealer, because of the likelihood of multiple "DOA" purchases that would require exchanging it for one that works -- often several times!
With any luck, this brand will prove to be reliable. We'll see -- warranty is one year.

Purchased December 18, 2003 at Fry's in Dallas. It was literally the last one they had at that location. The first 4 weeks (30 days) I owned it, everything played flawlessly. That includes rented and burned movies. Starting around the 37th day into ownership, it started to hiccup during playback. Usually around 45 min to 1 hr into watching either a burned or rented movie. It would pause for about 1-3 seconds, and start playing again on it's own. I called Frys, they said "Sorry, it's beyond our 30 day return policy". I've called and emailed Norcent in California numerous times, leaving msgs both ways, and they haven't responded back.
Fast forward now almost 2 months into owning this thing, and the problem has gotten much worse. About every 15 minutes into playing either an original dvd, rental, or copied movie (on any brand/type of media), this thing freezes and starts back up again.
I hate this player. Worst out of several I've owned. |

When i try to fast reverse vcd or svcd with chapters right on the chapter mark time, the unit stop and then i need to press play again, and the video returns to begin. I can fast reverse without any problem if i try it in another points of my (s)vcd's, just on the chapters maks the machine stop. Some help?? Anyone had this problem before...?? Thank`s
Anyway, it is the best player...plays anything you put inside...it is region free, have progressive scan output, auto voltage..and very cheap. Better than 300$ Pionner dvds. |

| I bought this a year or so ago and it has worked perfect. I was hesitant because of the price (you only get what you pay for) but this unit is well worth the price. I have friends that spent $150 to $200 on their players that don't compare to this player. If you leave the tray open and hit the setup key on the remote this brings up a menu where you can change some settings. Hit the next key on the remote and your into the region menu. Cool. Another feature that this unit has is the ability to install a harddrive. The newer versions don't support this. I highly recommend this dvd player it's awesome. |

This DVD player DOES NOT PLAY XVCD !!!! Skips and stutters constantly. Very disapointed! The reviews posted on this website said this DVD player plays XVCD, main reason for buying it. Tired of converting SVCD to XVCD, wanted a player that does both so I can play my existing movies. If your looking for a player that does play XVCD, this is not it. Now I have to return this crap to AMAZON. It does play SVCD and VCD just fine, and the price is good. But not what I was looking for.

| I just went out to Walmart and picked this little baby up for $48 CDN (on sale). My Apex 1500 just died, which I loved. This one is playing all of the VCD's and SVCD's I have with no apparent problems so far. It also played a regular DVD I bought with no problems. I did notice a couple of annoyances though. First, there is no LCD display, but I guess that is partially why it is so cheap. One other problem is that it doesn't play all of my MP3's that I have burned on CD's. Just seems to skip some of them, even if the bit rate is the same as some of the others that play. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the MP3's are VBR which may be not compatible with this player. The remote is also pretty sensitive to any angles except for straight on. If it is more than a few degrees off on an angle it doesn't work. Other than that is it great. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap dvd player that plays almost everything. |

| I had it for 2 years and everything I tried worked... except the other day I rented "Daddy Daycare" and it just froze with a black screen. I tried it on my friends Norcent 300 and the same problem, tried another copy same thing!! Tried in on a JVC dvd player no problem. |

Won it at an X-Mas party, proply stopped working in less than a week, during which time it caused inetreference and had bad pic quality.
Retuned to Walmat for another. new unit worked like a charm. found out it also could be mad region free and disable macrovision too!!
to my surprise it will also play Div-x Mpeg too!!
Free..can get any better than that. it was selling for $89 CAD, now discontinued. =*( at least I cant find it.
if you can find one, scoop it up. you wont regret it. |

| This is a good player. It plays everything i've thrown at it and it even played some anamorphic r2 and r3 dvd's after i used the remote code. My only problem is that the player noisy SOMETIMES while loading the menu's or special features but it's very quiet while playing the movie itself. Also there seems to bee this very slight slo mo-juttery affect on some dvd's of mine, but this could be the discs fault or whatever. Overall, a great player. |

This is an update of my previous post on 12 July 2003.
Two weeks ago I bought a Pioneer DVR-A06U DVD burner and have burned at least a dozen DVDs so far, using DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW media, mostly Sony and Maxell. Plays everything flawless. Got some Ritex and DVD-Pro media coming in this week and I hope they're as good as everybody here's been saying!

Hope can disable MacroVision, but not.
Hope can have music slideshow, but not, only has
special effect between slideshow.
Hope can play MP4. Don't know.

| Excellent player. Plays all my VCD's, SVCD's, Jpgs, mp3s and even raw Mpeg files flawlessly. SVCD's with menus play perfectly as well. I heard good things about this unit from this web site and decided to pick one up from Walmart for $79 Canadian. They only had 2 left. I would like to pick up another one as a gift but have visited Walmart 3 times since purchasing my first unit and unfortunately this model seems to sell out as soon as they restock their shelves. I will keep trying to obtain another one. Excellent player! Highly recommend it! |

| Well i got this player last chirstmast fror 88$ canadian at wal-mart, got to say compared to the pioneer player my parents have this one is better. Picture is really good, you can skip all the crap on DvD's like the warnings and that stuff when you load it, which the pioneer we got doesnt do. Plays VCD's extremly great, never had a problem with them, plays cd-r and cd-rw. Hopefully this player will last me a while. |

I bought one of these babies when my Apex AD1200 suddenly stopped playing my home-burned VCDs and SVCDs. I was so impressed with its performance I went out the next day and bought a second one.
My VCDs, SVCDs and JPEG files performed beautifully on the DP300, including an experimental SVCD I burned the other day of two five-minute MPEG2 clips with a bitrate of 8000kbps VBR. One clip was sized at 720x480, the other at 352x480, and the DP300 played them without even a slight glitch or blip. Have not tested any DVD-R/W or DVD+RW in it yet, for I'm currently unable to make any of those. But that may be changing very soon!
I'd give this player a "10" if not for the fact that you cannot remove the on-screen display during such functions as repeat or zoom. But for the measly $50 the Norcent DP300 is a great deal and will not disappoint. My love affair with Apex products is finally over! JAW |

A great player. Small size, no skipping, Pal/NTSC easy. I got it at amazon, US$59 with shipping and I got a 10.00 coupon as well. Its a serial #HE1122472...
My Hong Kong vcds both 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 play fine, Sony CDR 700 plays fine, Maxell DVD+RW from england play fine, Odd dvd+r (I think) plays here and nowhere else, Region 1&2 play fine.
I used this hack from the remote:
1. Power on the unit (on/off button on dvd player)
2. Press 8888 (8 button on remote 4 times)
3. Press next button
a new option on the menu appears at the bottom entitled "Version"
select "DVDREGION" and select "0" to turn off region code.
Worked like a charm!!!!

| I purchased this dvd player in response to a lack of vcd and svcd by most major brands. We had 2 Sony dvd players that would barely read vcd's. So I bought this to take care of watching the movies I download. I have had no problems and at all with using it and it plays perfectly. Another feature that I think is very nice is you can burn mpeg's onto a cd in whatever order and they play fine once selected from the menu. As for the top of the line models, i won't ever buy one again, this dvd player is wonderful for about 50 bucks. Even if it stopped working, I would rather buy 4 of these than 1 high end model that only plays dvd's. I would definitely recommend this player. |

Has played just about everything I have thrown at it. XVCD at 3500Kbps. XSVCD VBR at 8000Kbps max, 3000Kbps avg. Of course, plays VCD/SVCD without hickup. Plays VCD menus well from Ulead MovieFactory (Demo) very well.
Have tested following media without failure (4x written only by LiteOn 48x CDR/W):
1. TDK 80min (certified plus).
2. Verbatim 80min (Sam's 100-pack).
3. Maxell 80min black.
However, doesn't play MPEG4/Windows Media (.asf/.wmv) files.
VERY nice unit, especially for the price. Have bought three (one for mother, in-laws, and personal backup/test unit) from amazon.com ($39.99 with rebate + shipping).
