For the money, this is an amazing DVD player. It plays just about anything you throw at it. You can mix and match different video format files such as mpeg1, mpeg2, avi and burn as a DVD-ROM and it will auto detect the format and play each file one after another, and you can use the skip button to skip back and forth between files.
The quality of avi (divx) playback is excellent. It also plays PAL in addition to NTSC.
The only negative is DVD+R DL discs. It has a hard time with them. Backups of commercial discs are usually okay, though I did have one disc that was very flaky. Discs burned using Nero 6.x though would not play at all. I wish the company would address this in a firmware update.
I bought it for $35 after a $10 rebate at buy.com |

For the price it is indeed nice. But recently I got problem playing multisession data DVD+Rs -- just first session is visible for the player, which sucks and forces me to reburn disks
Also it seems that there is no firmware upgrades for the beast so you get stuck with what you buy.
Set of features is quite limited but is sufficient to play your movies |

This is an excellent little DVD player. Its slim and plays just about anything you throw at it. Got it for $35 after rebate from Buy.com. The picture is crystal clear, plays NTSC and PAL movies burned on DVD+R. Thats right, it plays PAL videos on my NTSC TV.
Most cheap DVD players, when you turn them off with the tray open just leave the tray open and turn off. More expensive players will check the tray and close it if it is open before shutting off. The DP220 does the latter. Its a very well thought out design and inexpensive does not mean cheap.
I have been archiving VCDs on DVD+R. I rename the videos from the VCDs to *.mpg and place them all in the root dir and burn as a DVD ROM. It shows the root dir as the menu when you insert the disc and allows you to select and play individual files. Pressing "next" on the remote jumps from one mpg file to the next. I have also mixed DVD and VCD files.
I also discovered I can mix mpeg1 and mpeg2 on the same disc. I had some small DVDs (5-10 mins) and just renamed the main VOB file *.mpg and mixed it in with the VCD mpg files. AWESOME! |

| I bought this player for 38 bucks at 6th Ave on Monday. I really impressed with what it can do. It played all of my DVD excpet DVD+R. It's cool consider I only have one and that I record everything else in DVD-R and DVD+RW. Playing Divx is only a cherry on top of already good play. Best 38 bucks I spent |

I have to say that I am really really impressed with this player. I have owned 4 DVD players in my life, this one can play every disk I throw at it.
Disk Loading is fast. Stays reasonably cool, does not overheat unlike other players.
Unit looks good, does not have a display screen and is not too big.
Another good feature this player has is 1.5X Zoom. With 1.5X Zoom, the picture is still very clear on my 32inch Sony 4X3 TV. I get to view bigger picture (though I lose some picture in the sides, so it is a compromise).
Remote is also good. Small, and does the basic work.

This is the best DVD player I have used in my time. Better than my 5 disc $400 Sony DVD player or my Samsung VHS/DVD.
For those of you who think you need 5.1 surrounds and a whole switchboard on the back of your player, get real. Most people never use optical outputs or many other outputs other than the tried and true composite outputs (which in my opinion works super fine).
The main perk for this player other than its low price (I got it for $22.50 with shipping from eBay after registering for their card to get $30.00 off), is its ability to play DivX.
I have tried all formats of DivX and Xvid at many different qualities. I've played five year old avi's to the most recent released files.
I must say that the DivX subs are excellent turn on and off easy. All you do is press the menu button then highlight the sub, press the angle button, then select the movie you want to play (make sure that the screen shows the caption: "DivX subtitle select."
The only playback problem that I've experienced is that it does not play WAV, I have some files with WAV audio (though most files are MP3) this is not a big drawback at all. Maybe a firmware update may fix this.
Oh yeah...I have heard people complain that sometimes the video is blurry and the colors distorted. THERE IS A FIX. Once you open the video and see the weird colors and pixelation, press the P/I button on the remote. The screen goes black...press it again and the colors are corrected and everything is perfect.
And for those of you who think the remote stinks, this remote is one of the best remotes for a player in this price range. Most players below $50 use a dinky onesize fits all remote. This remote, though weird at first (you get used to the small shape after ten minutes) is sturdily built and shows that Norcent has put a creative touch on the thing.
If you are going to buy a DVD player, one that will last a while, save space (slim design), looks good, plays almost anything you through at it, and does not break your wallet, you have no excuse not to get this player.
For a DVD player under $30, a rare feat in itself, this player rivals those that cost four times more.
I back this DVD player 100% and brag about the great buy I made. |

overall this is a pretty good player. has alot of features for 44$. plays mp3 dvd's unlike alot of dvd players. you can burn a bunch of vcd files to dvd and it will play them back, you don't have to burn a vcd file to cdr. i noticed it doesn't play back every divx perfectly and i'm not sure about xvid. if it messes up while playing a divx file you should try turning it off for a minute or so and then retry, that fixes it in some cases.
you can also just burn vob files to data dvd and it will play them back. i really hope norcent releases some kind of firmware upgrades since this is a very popular player.
for technical information on this player just check out the norcent homepage:

| Just buy it ! It plays everything that I have flipped in , and best part is the price , also imagine a player that playes Xvid/Xdiv from DVD-RW . What other value for money can a person want. The only thing missing is a USB 2.0 and a IEEE port . There is a Samsung HT-P38 DVD/Divx player with that and 5.1 surround and 5 Disc Changer , but it costs $250 available at Circuit City. if you are novice and want good product at cheap price , donot think further. Enjoy ! |

Based largely on the reviews here, I bought a Norcent DVP220 from buy.com for $45.
Popped in an xvid cdr first thing and it worked beautifully.
Since then I've tried about 20 xvid and divx cdrs and dvdrs with no luck - not a one would play. I used gspot to try to find the difference between the one xvid that would play and one that wouldn't and I could not find much of relevance - different size, runtime, and screen size was about all.
Plays VCDs and DVDs just fine. I see what people mean about the tiny remote but I don't find it a problem. Plays mpgs.
I wish I could figure out what's wrong with it. It's a great price, if only it would actually play my collection.

Very interesting player; it plays most or all avi files (divx also) that I've tried, as well as mpegs and even asf(!!!) files. On ASFs it won't play sound unless it is encoded at 22Mhz (go figure). Perhaps a firmware upgrade would solve this (and the inability to region hack). Pal to NTSC conversion is good.
Player is slow to respond.

miniDVD/cDVD DivX XviD
|
| Comments: |
Uses the same ESS chipset as the DVP642 and therefor suffers from the bitrate spike problem when playing DIVX on CDR.It does seem less prone to bitrate spike then the DVP642. When you play the same file from a DVD there is no bitrate spike so I guess this problem is relted to players firmware and not the software used to create the DIVX file. Plays XVID O.K. Plays miniDVD as a DVD unlike the DVP642 which sees miniDVD as a raw mpeg file. Plays VCD and SVD well. Picture quality seems sharper than the DVP642.
I see why people don't like the remote. It's as well made as any remote but it's very small and has tiny buttons. The lack of a front panel disply is drawback but the DVP642's display barely qualifies for the description anyway. Overall I'd sy it's better player than the DVP642 and it's significantly cheaper. |

I love this player! I also have a Philips DVP642 DivX player and have had nothing but problems with it. I wanted so much to love that player, but it could barely play anything I had. There's two main reasons why I wanted a DivX player: anime and downloaded TV/movies.
Philips choked on so many things with that stupid codec message. Plus, it had problems reading various media. The latest firmware didn't fix anything.
This player is rock solid. It's so much cheaper than the Philips. It plays XviD! People said that XviD wasn't working but it works beautifully. I can throw old CD's, dirt cheap media, high-end media, etc. and so far they have all worked.
Picture quality is excellent.
At first, I thought it used the same chipset as the Philips because the file menu looks eerily similar but I haven't had the same problems on the Norcent.
Problems: There is no front panel LCD. I didn't miss it much after awhile. I read that the Norcent handled scanning better than the Philips but it didn't seem better at all. The Norcent is uglier than the Philips.
I haven't tried Q-Pel stuff yet but I'm not holding my breath on that one. If it does work, I will be in heaven.
SUMMARY: DivX player preference Norcent > Lite-On > Philips |

| Works great for a 45.99 player. Only disappointment is it is hit or miss with xvid. Some it will play. Some it plays badly. Some it won't play at all. Divx plays great. Nearly as good as dvd. Like everyone else has commented the remote is a joke and most multi-remotes will not have a code for this player. |

| I bought this for multi-system conversion and divx/xvid playback. Although it plays various divx files, so far it has not played any xvid files I have tried (encoded in different ways). The picture appears all pixellated and is basically unwatchable. If you want xvid playback, I'd recommend you spend a few dollars more (about $10 probably) and get the Philips DVP 642. Also, as David said, the remote is pathetic (it looks like a 2-year old's toy), and the player lacks a front display pannel (which the Philips has). I'm returning this baby right now! |
