performance/quality in making 1 and 2 hour DVDs from VHS tape, or via firewire from DV deck or DV camera is excellent.
can write direct to dvd from dv camera via firewire without even needing tape in the camera e.g. for surveillance. dubbing via firewire from dv deck or camera (from tape) is accurate and easy with device control from the JVC unit(new chapter on pause etc).
not the easiest machine to use to do tricky things, but simple enough for straight dubbing. as others say, the manual could be better. |

| My primary reason for purchasing the JVC DRMV1S was to convert my VHS tape collection to DVD's. From that standpoint, the unit was easy to understand. Still, the User Manual was long and confusing. And calls to JVC didn't yield much in the way of help. Still, I was able to convert most of my VHS tapes with little or no problem. The built-in VCR player is a cheap unit and can be difficult to load tapes with at times requiring a shut-down of the unit to get it working right. But by far my biggest problem, and the one that finally got me to get rid of the unit, was the 'LOADING' errors I started getting. For some 'unknown' reason the DRMV1S would go into a 'LOADING' mode where everything would stop. You could be copying DVD's,watching a VHS or DVD(movie) and for no reason the unit would shut down and start blinking 'LOADING'.The only way to clear was to unplug and power-off the system. This would work for awhile, but you never knew when the dreaded 'LOADING' error would come back. Calls and emails to JVC got me no where. Finally, I returned the unit to BestBuy. That was back in August. I paid $446. I see now (Nov.) there selling the same system for $350. And one other thing, there is was a large number of 'open box'DRMV1S units for sale as well. BEWARE. |

I try for 3 weeks, easy setup, and operating control,
very confuse manual with some errors, some time you need to use you imagination to find some thing, 1, 2, 3, hours are good, 4 hours you notice the quality drop noticeable, I not try 6 hours yet, I use RITEK & PRODISC (4X) & TDK-RW (2X) not problem, I lilke the automatic recorder for record from you satelite dish, and the flexible recorder, so you can set the aproximate time you need for recorder,
60, 65, 70,75, 80,85 90 (minutes) and up til 480. I give 8 only for the hard and confuse to Dubb from VHS, and for the confuese manual, other way I give 9
(only I give 10 to the recorder that met all the feutures I want, and that one is not yet in the stores, (2 COMPONENT IN, 2 s-vhs in FR, AUTOMATIC RECORDER, DVD-R DVD-RW DVD-RAM, SATELITE TUNNER)
THAT IS A PERFECT DVD RECOREDER FOR GIVE A 10 |

I've used the DR-MV1S for a week now. I agree that the manual is confusing - I've had to keep it handy for what should be the simplest operations. Lots of vhs to DVD transfers (won't do copy-protected tapes though) with only one screw-up. The machine is extreemly sensitive to power spikes (it will shut off or just become unresponsive: ruining whatever you are recording).
The DVD picture quality on the 1, 2, and 4 hour hour modes is very good with solid blacks and no artifacts.
Shop around for the best price. I paid too much at Best Buy. |

| Bad manual with many errors, expensive service telephone in Germany, with service agents, who do not know many answers, all they do is, read the manual, they do not even have the writer. |

I got this machine as my first foray into non-computer DVD burners. I found it easy to set up (but the remote is very confusing). So far I've only dubbed from VHS to DVD, and the quality on the 6hour DVD is not good (smeary colors, some pixellation). The 4hour DVD quality is much better.
Supposedly this machine will slightly enhance the VHS, but I haven't seen much evidence of that. On the other hand, I'm working from 6hr videos, so there is only so far the videos can be enhanced.
The timer is easy to set, and so far I have had no problems. This machine is very sensitive to spikes -- make sure you have it on a good surge protector, or any electrical blip will and make it revert to the factory settings.
I've been using generic media, and Memorex DVD-RW, and have not found any problems burning. The editing of the DVDs is a bit kludgy -- if you're editing out commercials, you might try using your computer (if you have that setup).
I'm rating this at a 7, because the menus and the remote are very confusing (and the display is not the easiest to decipher). |
