Bought this unit for $79 (no rebate necessary!) at Circuit City, but will be returning as soon as I repack it. Tuner falls to pieces with noise and distortion upon hitting record. Must re-enter video source through menu upon every new action. Runs hot. Tiny remote gives big headache. Waste of money regardless of low-cost. I could go on and on here, you get the idea...

I guess some of us don't bother to read the manual, the 1600 will record only +r and +rw, and although some might have a bit of LUCK getting -r to work, why get enraged when they do not? My unit works 100% with the +r discs, and formatting is very quick and painless. The picture quality is excellent, and altogether I find it to be excellent value for the money.

I bought total of 3 DVR-1600's, so there cannot be a coincidence. One after another have lost the recording abilities. As if it wasn't enough, they hardly play anything at all. I of course tried to clean the laser heads - no difference. I'm lucky if I can get any of them to play a DVD at first try. To achieve that, I usually have to unplug and plug the power cords. About 40% od disks won't play anyway. And I'm talking about all types: regular DVD's out of a movie store, DVD-R's, DVD-RW's etc.

Oh, one more thing: a person at Cyberhome who invented "formatting" of every disk before use should be hanged! Why other brands can do without it?? I've tried every single brand of DVD-R's. What happens is that sometimes the 1600 even detects an unformatted DVD-R (usually it just displays "NO DISK" message). When it does, I'm really happy and I put it on formatting. Well, for the past 2 months I succeeded with very few DVD-R's. All the rest just hang at 98% of formatting, the power cord has to be unplugged for some time, and the DVD-R is a garbage. If I succeed with that and actually start recording, I'm getting a "DISK ERROR" at one of the instances when I pause for commercials.

I repeat: it happens with every brand of DVD-R I tried and each one of the 3 DVR-1600's I purchased. Coincidence? I think not!

Too bad that I decided to return (actually to get a store credit and buy 3 Samsungs DVD-R120's instead) them to Best Buy after the 30-day return period. The Customer Service employees including the manager were very rude (it looked as if they were fed up with returns on that model). They didn't exchange, only suggested to contact Cyberhome. The whole repair procedure there takes few months... And so I'm stuck with 3 DVD players (not playing DVD's)/recorders (not recording DVD's - only wasting good disks)... I don't care that they are really cheap for recorders. They are not worth a penny as long as they don't do their job.

Beware - learn on my story - whatever you do, DO NOT BUY CYBERHOME DVD RECORDERS! However, to show that I'm being objective writing the above, I can say that Cyberhome DVD players are a very good choice for the money.

Works great - no coasters yet.

Macrovision protection can be bypassed by recording over coaxial cable from VCR

DVDs read well in my LG dvdRW drive on my win 98 pc

Live recording from video camera works great over analog (RCA cables)

Recording from TV works great

my biggest problem is friends wanting to record with it.

I just got one earlier today -- labeled MU1, and dated November 2005.

Tried +RW and -RW (both Fuji) and they seem to work fine.

Macrovision? No problem! I did the following screwy thing:

-----The connection setup-----
1) Connected an antenna to the recorder.
2) Connected the recorder RF-Out to the VCR Antenna-In
3) Connected the VCR RF-Out to the television.
4) Connected VCR's RCA output jacks to the recorder input.
5) Connected the recorder RCA output jacks to the VCR output.
-----Now, the process of recording-----
6) Put in the tape, but don't play it.
7) Tune VCR to any channel.
8) Set source to the RCA jacks (Video 1? or was it 2?)
9) Hit "record" on the recorder.
10) Press "play" on the VCR.

Works fine...at least for me. With this connection setup, I have actually recorded to DVD on one channel, recorded another on tape, while watching a third!

There is a new backend firmware update ( released Feb 3rd ) which addresses disc compatability issues . It's available on the CyberHome website as .nrg Nero file , or standard ISO for those without Nero .
It is version # c00000610 . I have installed but not tested it . Ironically i find that the discs recommended by CyberHome won't work in my machine , but most of the not recommended ones do !

I Just bought the Cyberhome DVD 1600MU at Best Buy in Traverse City, MI. for $99.95 I've been looking for a good Stand alone DVD recorder / player. I've had one in my home computer for one year now, and love it. When Cyberhome offered one for under $100 I jumped at it.
I have 2 Tivo series 1 Philips and a series 2 DTV.
Both TIVO's original harddrives where copyed by me "before" I added 2 120 gig drives ie. virgin images 180 megs each. Anyway the first 1600 crapped out after formatting 3 dvd +R's (it would get to 98% format and hangup). I returned it to BB and got another one. This second unit works fine. I decided to format 10 disk as soon as I got it home, with no problems!
I'm transferring my TIVO's programs using S-Video and Stereo inputs on the DVD 1600. Record is set to 4 hours so I can get 2 - two hour programs per disk. The picture quality in my 50" Zenith is excellent and the 5.1 audio (when present in the Tivo) is reproduced just fine (no farting). Once all programs are committed to DVD I'm clearing both hard drives for more video (I have 30 hours of TV UFO progamming). TIVO + DVD1600 a truely unbeatable combo. And for those who have Macro problems, that little problem goes away with the TIVO. For the money $99.95 each for a TIVO and a DVD 1600, it's the best money I've ever spent (divorce not counted)... hehehe!

I forgot to mention, in my last review, that this unit does not allow to insert chapters. You can only have chapters every 5,10 or 15 minutes. I personally don't like this. I did update Bios, but I still could not make copy of recored DVD+RW on my PC. If you need to contact cust support, cyberhome website don't give you toll free tel nr. You are on hold for at least 40 min. I finally got toll free tel. so use it: 888-302-2727.

I have been reading reviews posted on this model. I have the newer Model DVR1600-MU1 which is current update firmware. Yes there are some media types that can't record on this unit, but I have the same problem with my Pioneer DVD burner, HP Burner and Sony burner. Not all media is produced the same way. Use FUJI, RICOH, Ritek, Ridata and CMS Magnetics DVD +R and DVD +RW these work well. For the cost it is a good machine but don't record andy longer then 4 HRS (EP), use the LP and SP modes give good recordings I tried the SLP and it was fair.

I got some old 2X Compusa +RW media that works ok.

I really like the option for viewing JPEG files on CD media, it's great.

This is actually my third one. The first two I had to exchange at Target. The first one completely crapped out, and would not play or recognize ANY discs after 3 weeks. The second one would not recognize any of the discs I recorded on it, and would just say bad disc. It played pre-recorded dvd's just fine. On the third one, it has worked fine. I did figure out that all of the problems with the second player were due to using HP discs, both dvd +r and dvd +rw. I have had no problems with Imation and JVC discs. I did the region free hack in the hacks section posted by Tony on 12/26/05, but have not tried it because all of my discs are region 1. i have had problems trying to copy dvds due to Macrovision and just get the message that the disc is protected. Still hoping for a Macrovision hack or workaround.

Every feature looks fine except one. This dvd can not read my DVD movies recorder on DVD+RW, on my computer. After I insert the movie I get a question "Do you want to format disk?". Of course I do not, I want to watch my movie. The disk itself is fine because I can play it on my other DVD player. It looks like DVD+RW disk are readible only if you write on them on this Cyberhome. Computer burned DVD+RW are not. I will call manufacturer tommorow to check this out, but I don't think this should be likek this. The whole purpose of burning something on your media is to be able to watch it on your dvd player. This one seems to chave some issues with it.
If you have any comment or solution to my DVD+RW problem, please write to me.

I find that the cheaper products like Apex and CyberHome are better for people who like to experiment.

Unless you spend more money, you cannot find such a good DVD recorder. This is my first DVD recorder, bought on sale for $80.

Cable television recorded quite nice. I noticed no difference from the actual signal, except colors were slightly off, but that may be due to how I set up my television.

I download many divx, xvid movies and they play well. I had a problem with a couple, but they did not play on my computer either, so they were probably encoded wrong.

Also, KVCD works well. The quality is good for me and the movies fit on a cd-r.

Now, I plan to burn old VHS to to DVD, but so far everything is satisfactory, when taken together with the price.

I purchased this recorder as VCR replacement and to transfer all the kids VHS's to DVD (space saver). It was approx. $100CAD at Walmart.

It is the 1600 MU MFG'd on Oct 2005. First I replaced/upgraded the firmware with the latest from the cyberhome.com web site. I followed the instructions and it worked perfect.

User Interface:
Has an excellent on-screen user interface! Externally has lot's of inputs/outputs. Will output component p-scan. Best quality input is DV and analog s-video. remote is not organized very well.

Playback:

I'm using the component out (in Interlaced mode) and the picture quality is very good (clear, sharp images). Sound is also great through my TV. The following media work correctly on my unit CDR, CDRW, DVD+R, DVD+RW and pressed DVD's. I also downloaded some divX trailers from the divX web site and they played well (you must use the extension ".avi" as ".divx" is not recognized).

Recording:

Tuner recording produces about the same quality as a good VHS recorder (excellent for recording your favorite show's weekly with the timer on DVD+RW). I was having problems copying VHS movies for archiving, as the unit would display a copyright notice and pause. This was corrected/removed by the region code hack listed in the "DVD Hacks" section of videohelp.com. I am still getting some "dark/light" macrovision effects from some VHS so the analog video input does not filter macrovision (as it should) and I don't know if there is a hack to completely remove it from the analog signal. Recording from 8Mil analog video camera produces very good results. All DVD+R's I've recorded will play in my Sony DVD player after they've been finalized. I did notice that one recording had a "skip" in it when played on my Sony but not when played on the DVR1600.

Overall I would say this is a good VCR replacement (based on the MU with the latest firmware) and provides very good playback capability for the price. It is also a hackers dream as it is mostly software driven.

Just bought a Cyberhome DVR1600ME2 from Asda UK, build date of December 05, bios version 593/042s.

I can confirm that the region code hack described elsewhere on this thread works as expected and that the device does indeed record to DVD-RW (Datawrite) disks, although the disks would not format when the DVD drive was selected as the source. If you find that you cannot format your DVD rewritable disks then first try selecting the TV Tuner as source then retry the format procedure.

With respect to the devices features:

1) The output scart socket can be configured from the menu system to output RGB if required. I have not yet tested RGB scart input.
2) The TV tuner is basic analogue, and on my system shows faint wave distortions when recieving signals from my cable device, although I think this is down to the signal amplifier that I have connected inline. When connected directly to a freeview box the image looks perfect and stable.
3) When recording in LP mode (172 Mins) the quality is fine, the recorded image looked the same as the original when recording from the freeview digi-box.
4) No DTS or 5.1 surround sound. Sound signals are down-mixed to stereo.
5) Good selection of inputs for recording from external devices such as DV camcorders, VCR's etc.
6) Good DVD playback - I have had experience with Cyberhome DVD players before and never had any problems.
7) No automatic program recording system i.e. video plus.
8) Clear and simple menu system.
9) 1 year warranty from ASDA.

At this point I am happy with the system. Bottom line is you get what you pay for. If you want a simple DVD recorder to replace an old VCR or to enable transfer of videos, camcorder films etc to DVD whilst at the same time allowing you to play MP3/WMA files and JPEG photo's then for this price (£69.00) you can't really go wrong. Why pay £25-35 for a simple DVD player.
If you are a die-hard AV user with solid gold cable connectors, 60" home cinema screens and 'Pimp-my-Room' type surround sound systems then this is probably not for you!

I would like to know if these devices can be firmware upgraded to support dual layer disks and if macrovision can be disabled via a remote hack?

I bought this thing because I had had excellent experience with the play compatability of the Cyberhome 300 DVD player and, at $90, the 1600 was not much more than an average DVD player. The ability to play all DVDR's was boilerplate for me. (I record DVD+R's with book type set to DVD-ROM on my PC, so compatability should be excellent. I immediately found this thing will not play DVDR's that the Cyberhome DVD 300 plays with ease. Furher, when I went to the Cyberhome web site and found there was an EPROM upgrade available, I downloaded the two image files and burned the images to CD-R's. I did this with three brands of blank disks and the 1600 would not load any of them. All gave a disk error. As far as I'm concerned the thing is a piece of junk and it will be going back to Best Buy. Will try a Lite-On which seem to be better in terms of compatability.

It is real shit!
I bought it for $95CA in Wal-Mart.
1. A tuner gives a noise (pretty high level), video inputs do not.
2. I tried A-B point reduction (cutting) from the movie – it did it, BUT players (not only that one) did freeze (for short period of time) at those points.
3. DivX – not good (comparing to LG 530), but (o.k.) nobody promised it.
4. I record a movie, tried to edit its title (change the name), I got 100% done and after that the disk became unrecognizable even by cyberhome itself!!! I can not finalize it.

So…:
Pro: cheap
Contra: read above!

PS: I used DVD+R, DVD+RW disks.

Has anyone found a way around the copy protection of duplicating VHS or DVD ? The dvd won't even start recording and VHS seems to have lines going through it.

Any help would be great

Cannot expect anything else out of it. This is the first product I have seen that has atleast 4 different types of units, which are different in functionality / specifications / chipset. I know of MU, ZU, ME, ZC by now.

Looking at the comments, it seems that ME is the best one... do not buy any other!!!

I got an ZU unit, upgraded to latest firmware and not the unit has stopped detecting CD-R media. The unit has NTSC hardcoded and DOESN'T give PAL output, nor does it take PAL from analog inputs! Beware, it is NOT multisystem!!

Regarding support, you do not get anything other than automated reply.

I would highly discourage this product unless you strictly want a cheap DVD recorder.

A notice for anyone from the UK

If you use the german Firmware Upgrade from here http://www.cyberhome.de/de/Downloads-index-req-viewsdownload-sid-21.html then you will lose the ability to play DixX and XviD files. I'm gutted and am now going to have to either find the original Firmware, or take the player back to Asda and swap it :(
