Bought this fine unit at a Fry's Electronics for $179.99. Not to bad of a price I suppose.
So far I have been able to play VCDs, SVCDs, backed up DVDs (DVD-R), CD-RW, audio CDs, MP3 and JPG on a DVD (Yes!) and MPG2 files on both CD and DVD. All work fine. Won't play Divx or WMA files, and heck knows I tried.
I have used Nero 5.5 and 6 and DVD Squeeze to burn the media. Media used so far has been GQ CDs, Apple DVD-R, GQ DVD-R, Verbatim CD-RW, Ritek CD-RW, Memorex DVD-R, and regular pressed DVDs.
You can use it to view JPGs on a CD or a DVD. Nice. Like that a lot. It has a great little slide show if thats your thing, zoom, transitions, thumbnail mode, etc. I can see this being handy for the time honored task of showing off your vacation pictures to your friends that are too cheap to get their computer fixed (odd that its always broken when you stop by with vacation snaps).
The On Screen Display feature is handy. It shows you track info like disc time, track time, track number and the like. I have been spoiled by visualizations with my music (thanks iTunes...) so I was a little disappointed at the choice of the OSD or a blue screen. Music sounds good, clear for the size of the speakers that are on it. Some of the DSP audio settings are strange, maybe its just me but I can't think of a time when I have wanted the audio on a movie or an album to sound like its in a bathroom or a cave! It will show most of the folder name but only the first 14 letters of the file name. The OSD is not available in this mode. Drats! It would have been handy to see the tag.
The battery is odd. The arraignment is: Wall plug cord, transformer, cord, battery charger unit, cord, battery. Annoying that I can't use the unit and charge the battery at the same time. (I think a bit of wire and solder will fix that... Warranty? I laugh at those things).
The unit at the store has seen better days, so I take that as an indication as to how it would hold up if you gave it to your kids or a pro hockey player. The power socket was damaged so you had to 'jiggle the thingy' to get it to power up, and the screen would change in brightness as the hinge was moved so you better not crank on it too much. Treat it nicely and it should last. It would be nice it it had a video in so the screen could be used for a field monitor (once again I bet some wire and solder will fix that. If it works I'll tell everyone.) A contrast knob would have been a nice.
The laser has a habit of staying on for a bit after you open it so don't look! It only happened once or twice so I would not worry much.
The settings menu has a country choice but it must be disabled. I tried to use it to view a region 6 DVD and it told me that it was the wrong region. Oh well, the region hack works (press '1' a lot during start up) so its not all that bad. I'm sure someone with more time than sense will figure out if this thing is user upgradeable. Rock on software mods!
All in all I'd say that if your looking for a budget portable LCD DVD player this is a good start. Sure, it might not have component video out, or even S-Video (Hear that Mintek?) but its cheap. Better than that, you can show it off to your friends on a fishing trip and look like the big shot you are.
