| This player DOES, in fact, play XVCDs (whoever said it doesn't is simply wrong); I have made nearly 200 of them at bitrates ranging from 112audio/930video to 224audio/1300video and played them without any problem. I haven't tried really high bitrates, but the latter is still 50 bps higher than the VCD standard. It will play the MPEG-2 files on SVCDs (if you know where to look for them), but there's no fast forward or reverse, no zoom and, at least in the case of the one SVCD I tried, it stopped playing about 3 minutes before the end (my software dvd player had no trouble playing the disc in its entirety, so I can only assume it's a problem with this unit, and not with the file). The unit also plays all MPEG-1 video and MP3 files stored on CD-ROMs flawlessly. |

| I have a Phillips DVDRW228 and am using the WINTV PVR250 to capture (this card supports hardware encoding - very nice and fast), ulead videostudio 6 to edit and ulead dvd moviefactory to author. the Phillips uses DVD+ media. I have had no problems other than dirty discs causing a scanning/reading problem. The Mintek is not the fastest or fanciest player but it is reliable - especially for $60! No difficulty reading either DVD+R or DVD+RW media that i've created. I will replace it when i can afford to but as a entry budget DVD deck, it has been fine. There is a Firmware hack for this player that allows the Macrovision to be turned off and it also allows Region assignment. I have switched the firm ware several times with no problem (from hack back to factory and back...etc). If you do decide to hack this player, be very careful. I did a lot of investigation before i decided on this. Start looking on this site - it's where i began my search. Also, do a search on google for your player by 'Mintek 2580' and you will find more important information regarding the firmware hack. |

As others have said, this player does not natively play SVCDs...
you have to go into the menu and select the file and play it.
What others havent said is that 1) you can just burn mpg to
the disk and select it and 2) that includes VCD mpg (352x240),
SVCD mpg (480x480) and DVD mpgs (704x480). The (704x480) mpg
produces a really good result for home movies/video. I was not
able to fool the player into playing a DVD mpg by burning a noncompliant
VCD with the DVD mpg (gets "PCB" and does not play).
When you do select the file to play it, you lose the ability to
FF/RW/freeze frame. I did not test the player to see what the
maximum bit rate DVD mpg would be supported. This player
will also play jpeg and mp3 through the file selection process. |

Plenty of features but got confirmation from Mintek Digital that they do not make this model anymore and there isn't a recent model that will play DVD+Rs. None of our DVD players are specifically designed to play them.

This little gizmo is getting a bad rap! Almost every person complaining about VCDs, SVCDS, etc. is burning them wrong. The problem is you, not the little dvd player. Mintek even provides help on how to burn correctly....
To ensure that all files are shown, make sure you are recording (burning) your CD using the following options in your recording software.
NOTE: Certain options may not be available in your software.
ISO-9660 - If given the option to select a disk format (HFS, etc), make sure it is set to ISO-9660.
No Multisession - If given the option, do not burn the disc as a multisession disc.
Disc-at-Once / Track-at-Once - Disc-at-Once recording style is the most compatible, as all data is written to the disc in the most organized fashion. Avoid using Track-at-Once.
Finalize CD / Close Disc - Setting this option ensures that the data written is most compatible with consumer devices.
Leave Disc Open / Leave Session Open - If this option is available to you, make sure that it is not enabled. Most consumer devices, including Mintek players, cannot read discs which are open, or contain open sessions.
There ya have it.
P.S. For reals guys, for $70 you don't even get the right to complain. |

This plays store-bought DVDs fine. Some DVDs that our friends have burned play fine and we can use the pause button, nothing else. BUT, when we view a movie with the VCD format, first a lot of folders appear on the screen and we have to select Mpeg then SVCD and it will play. The problem is when we play the second disc it stops about 5 minutes before the movie ends. We tried turning off the player and then inserting the second disc, but it still cuts off the end. This is very frustrating. I noticed someone else posting here also experiences this problem.
Where is the Mintek forum referred to above? |

This was OK at first, but now this absolutely SUCKS!
Any CD-R or CD-RW I burn, it cannot read. Even the ones that used to work, do not work anymore. It plays DVD fine, and yes I've tried CD Lens Cleaners, and Air Duster Cans. Nothing is working. VCD quality is great though, and there is only limited SVCD support. It can play the svcd but thats literally all it can do. No fast forward/reverse, no zoom, no menu support, NOTHING.
I reccomend to NOT BUY THIS PLAYER, and spend $65 at Wal-Mart on the Apex AD-1200.
Just my 2 cents
-DJKOOLAiDE
P.S. the DuraBrand (Walmart brand) CD-R's DO NOT WORK in this player. |

This is also a follow-up on my earlier post.
The DVD player will record fine to VCR, and after disabling Macrovision on capture device, it records and plays back fine on the computer. The 9/10th of a screen problem was cleared up.
I also tested a VCD created by Nero on the unit, and it plays fine, and has menu support. I have not tested a SVCD yet, but I did test a VCD created with 160x192 screen size mpgs, and did not allow Nero to correct. The result was a jumbled image. |

| I have not yet tested the complete capibility of my Minteck 2580, but the results that I have seen are fairly good. I can play music CD's with no problems. I can play Mpeg-1 with little problems - depends on the screen size of the mpg. I can play Mpeg-2 with better results - screen size again. I have only had problems with one DVD - DBZ Cooler's Revenge - and that was with the beginning comercial (for Blue Gender) freezing up my DVD player. I can play images as long as they are jpeg. With the CD-R's that I play, one problem has happened - it does not always recognize how many files are on the CD. For instance, on a CD-R with 10 files, most of the time it recognizes all 10, but sometimes it leaves out maybe 6 of the 10. I just take the CD-R out, and put it back in and the problem is usually resolved. The DVD player also allows me to record from it to my VCR without any problems. But, like I posted on the forum, when trying to capture the video from the VCR to my computer, the file has 9/10ths of the screen blocked out. I have not used any hacks or upgrades for my DVD player. |

| I got this dvd player for christmas and a friend of mine explained to me what a vcd was and brought one over. It didn't work at first it brought up a file menu and he said he must have burned the vcd wrong. But it helped me figure out that you don't have to make a vcd or svcd for this player. It will Read Files with a .MPG extenstion which is really cool. I never Heard of a DVD player that could do that. If only it could read .AVI |

Followup to my previous posting.
I now notice that even DVD-Rs have the same problem as DVD-RWs on this player. Specifically, only the first 2 GB are read reliably; the rest of the disk gets progressively garbled. Just in case this was a fluke problem on my unit, I went to Best Buy and tried the one on display there--it had the same problem! This is unconscionable since even my old Toshiba SD-1200 player (purchased well over a year ago) can play DVD-Rs if they are made in just the right way, but this Mintek model can't. I guess the Mintek technical support people were correct: This model is not really compatible with DVD-R or DVD-RW. |

So far I've only used a DVD-R disk from cd-recordable.com, and a DVD-RW disk from Memorex. The DVD-R disk is read perfectly. The DVD-RW disk is also read perfectly for the first 2 GB. Over the rest of the disk, the quality steadily degrades until it eventually becomes totally unwatchable. This has happened consistently on 2 different burns of the DVD-RW disk.
Incredibly, Mintek technical support asserts that "Mintek products are not compatible with the DVD-R and DVD-RW formats." This they say even though the player has a dual-focus laser, does explicitly support CD-R and CD-RW, and appears to work perfectly with DVD-R and not-so-bad with DVD-RW. |

Used name-brand and generic DVD-R, worked fine. DVD-RW works, but I had to burn the disk and erase it once before it would work. Maybe it was my imagination. I don't use VCD or MP3 or other stuff, sorry.
Bought my unit for $99 at Best Buy storefront. (Not on their web).
Sidenote: menues and setups look oddly similar to my apex unit. |

| So far so good, plays everything I put in it(CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, Kodak Picture Disks), but had one episode where put in a CD-RW of JPEGs which it had previously read without problem, but it kept "loading" like it was having trouble reading disc. Overall, a great bargain for $80 with lots of cool features like zoom and multi-angle viewing, and a very funtional remote. |

This will play SVCD, but you have to open the Mpeg file with the onscrean file browser.
Anything opened with the file browser, including SVCD and MP3 content, cannot be paused.
Has karaoke pitch control on the remote, and it works, but it has no microphone inputs like the 2110.
Also supports Photo-CD and will play Jpeg image files as a slide show.
DVD-R support seems to depend upon the media. Pioneer plays fine, as does the stuff from CD-Recordable.com, but Ritek suffers from playback glitches and meriteline usually wont even load.
Digital audio out is only coax.

I used Snazzi to perform 5 min.MPEG1 capture from DVD in SIF quality 4MB/s. Snazzi ignores Macrovision so picture is pristine. Burned resulting MPEG file(160mb) to CD. Loaded into Mintek and pressed play button on file. Played nicely with no skip. Perfect A/V sync (Snazzi does perfect A/V sync). Quality is near VHS quality in 4MB/s mode. Only problem is at this capture setting probably can fit about 15 to 20 min. max on 1 CD. Next, I'm going to try SVCD software encoding to see if the Mintek can play SVCD disks as well.
I think the Mintek 2580 at $79 is a great deal! Best Buy can't keep enough stocked. Selling like crazy (see Wall Street Journal write up). Plays regular DVDs perfectly too. |
