CVD? $125 N/A 8 of 10 Comments: I got this dvd player for christmas 2 years and it has been working fine. Plays all my vcds. The funny thing about my player is that it plays svcds when burnt as a .bin/.cue image using nero but the problem is that it doesnt complete each disc. So about 5-15 minutes gets cut off from the end of each disc (email me if you know how to rid this problem). However, each burnt image was larger than the 700mb standard of a normal cd-r. This player also plays kvcds which are really handy when you dont wanna get up and switch discs. But 2 SVCD discs have greater quality than that of a KVCD. Im not sure if its my disc but when i play a vcd or kvcd or svcd burnt on a cd-rw, it plays good at first but then becomes all scrambled. I recommend this for people who are VCD and KVCD makers. For svcds, if the mpeg-2 is smaller than the max disc size, then give it a shot. Im guessing svcds work on some and some dont because there must have been diffrent versions of this dvd player but it remained named as just DVD-2110.

I liked the Apex that I had (1000) because it was smaller but I got it from a pawn shop and had to take it back. Anyway I don't burn anything but VCDs and it is doing that job great. I want to try Svcd but don't have the plug in on Nero.

Just got a Cendyne 105 (Pioneer A05) and was surprised all my tested media worked. Only my Apex Ad1000 plays SVCD, oh well. Haven't tried the Karaoke, can anyone recommend some?

N/A 9 of 10 JPG/JPEG Comments: This is the second DVD player I have owned. My first was the APEX 600A with hidden menu. I must say that the Mintek 2110 blows my APEX out of the water! The picture is much sharper, especially when it comes to black areas of the picture. Other than not being able to play SVCD, I have no complaints about this player. It's built well and has all of the features I need. And the price kicks ass too! TekWar

Turn the MIC LEVEL knob on the front of the player to the lowest level. 2. Plug microphones into the MIC1 and MIC2 jacks on the front of the player and switch them on. Microphones used must be mono and have an impedance of 600 ohms or less. 3. Insert a DVD or VCD Karaoke disc into the player and press the PLAY button. CDG and CD+G discs are not compatible with the player. 4. Use the VOLUME buttons on the remote control to adjust the internal volume of the player to 6 or 7. Then, adjust the volume of the TV or Stereo to which the player is connected to the desired level. 5. Turn the MIC LEVEL knob on the front of the player to adjust the microphone volume to the desired level. 6. Turn the ECHO knob on the front of the player to adjust the microphone echo effect to the desired level. 7. Use the number buttons on the remote control to choose the desired selection. 8. Some Karoke discs may default to a soundtrack that contains vocals. To eliminate vocals: Karaoke DVDs - push the LANGUAGE button on the remote control to select the appropriate soundtrack. Karaoke VCDs or CDs - push the AUDIO MODE button on the remote control to select the appropriate soundtrack. 9. Use the KEY CONTROL buttons on the remote control to adjust the pitch of the audio to best suit your vocal range. 10. When finished, press the STOP button. Switch off all microphones and disconnect them from the player. Note - If using the Digital Audio Output, sound will not be heard through the microphones. Connect the analog outputs (red/white) when using microphones.

I used the header trick for playing SVCD's i dont think it supports them because they would play but wont decode well, the screen gets scrambled and will skip.

CVD? $70 N/A 10 of 10 JPG/JPEG DivX Comments: I bought the Mintek 2110 at Best Buy because of it's Karaoke feature. The package included a good quality microphone. I have many Musical/Karaoke VCD's and DVD's I have purchased in different parts of the world. The DVD's I purchased are coded to play in "All Regions". The Karaoke feature is great. Set the DVD player volume control (on the remote control) to 7, set the mic volume and echo control on the front of the unit to midway, and voila! About half of the DVD's I purchased in other countries would not play on my Sony DVD player. This, in spite of the fact that they are coded for "All Regions". However, the Mintek 2110 played all of the VCD's and DVD's perfectly. The error correction logic of this machine is super! Mintek specifically states that none of their machines play SVCD. I paid 69.95 for this machine at Best Buy - What a bargain. Furthermore I will receive a 30.00 rebate by mail - making this machine almost free! Research has indicated that Mintek players are manufactured by Shinco in China. Shinco is the largest manufacturer of VCD and DVD players in China. With long experience in such a vast market it is no wonder that their product performs so well. The Sony goes to the garage sale.

N/A 8 of 10 JPG/JPEG Comments: Got this DVD player at Best Buy this past Friday for $40 ($70 minus $30 rebate) as one of their early-bird specials for the Day-After-Turkey-Day sale. This machine does play all of my VCDs, but, as most everyone here's already noted, it will not play any of my SVCDs at all. I tried Ken's trick with changing the heading of the MPEG2 files to MPEG1 with TMPGEnc and burning them as a VCD (see Ken Child's post below), and it worked just fine. Except for its inability to play SVCDs (I love to record classic cartoons in this format instead of VCD because of its superior picture quality), this machine does every bit as good as my Apex AD-1100W in my living room, even with the Kodak Picture CD feature. And it looks a lot better design-wise than that Apex model to boot. This one should not disappoint! JAW

I know for a fact it plays dvd+r and dvd+rw.Great vcd play back,and svcd plays also. Many people have put this dvd player down, but it plays everthing i throw at it. I even have it region free by updating the firmware. If you have a chance to grab this dvd player get it!!!!!!!

Brought it home and all my vcd's ran great, but it wouldnt play DVD's more than 10 seconds straight without skipping. I even tried 2 unopened dvd's for the first time in it, no success. I took it back to the store for a refund and there were 4 more by this model, and 3 1600 models, all returned for skipping problems. One would guess it to be a bad shipment but still i'm not going to take any chances. I use a Aiwa DVD player that runs great for both vcd & dvd in the emantime, but i'm still seeking a replacement for the one I returned.

CVD? $80 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: This player is awesome. Not only does it play MP3's and DVD-R's... To my surprise this sucker plays PAL formatted DVD's perfectly on my NTSC TV. That's right. I could not believe it. The quality is better than my old Apex that blew up but this one does not do well on SVCD's. That was not a big problem for me since I used that as an excuse to get my Pioneer A04 DVD-R drive. Since DVD-R's are down to $0.87 each ( http://www.supermediastore.com/dvdmedia.html )I will not be using SVCD's anymore.

There was also a store promotion to take 50% off any 3 Disney DVDs. Since I bought this DVD player as a primary player for the whole family, particularly for my older daughter, I could not be happier to buy 3 Disney DVDs at a discount. I came back to BestBuy and persuaded the saleman to give me a Sony microphone for free. I am really surprised by its image quality. Three weeks ago I bought an Apex 5131 from Circuit City for $100. The image is very dark, thus not viewable at all. I return that to CC the second day. It is very possible that I was just unlucky to get a bad unit of Apex 5131, and just lucky to get an exceptionally good unit of Mintek 2110. But I am more than happy to enjoy the excellent its picture quality. Although in some subtle scene, I felt that Toshiba DVD players I used before offer slightly better image quality. Toshiba's 4 level zoom is also better than Mintek's draconian 2X and 4X zoom. But I got much much more than I paid $80 for it. The karaoke is an instant sucess, especially for my daughter. I found that separate volume control for microphone and music is very good. Tune control is not very useful, as it changes music too much. JPEG viewing is very handy. I can burn pictures in multiple directories and control the display. The navigation is decent enough. Slide show will automatically advance every 3 to 5 seconds, or after you press arrow key. File navigation allows you to move up and down. Arrow key will advance 6 files at a time. I tried WMA without success. In navigation, the file HarryPorter1.asf does not show up on screen, thus can not be played. The only significant complaint is audio quality. I use coaxial digital out to my Denon receiver and NHT speakers. The sound somehow lacks clarity and spatial resolution. If you are a fan of classic music, you need to look at Toshiba and other Japanese brands for your primary DVD player. Considering the lack of progressive scan on Mintek 2110, it can only be a temporary solution or karaoke player or bedroom player, especially if or after you upgrade to HDTV. One word of caution, as I had bad experience with Apex 5131, make sure you can return it for full refund. I really do not expect Mintek or Apex's quality control is as good as Toshiba. All in all, I am more than totally satisfied with Mintek 2110 for $80, plus a microphone and 50% discount on Disney DVDs I happened to need.
