Got a final reply from Rac Enterprises. The new player will not play a Vcd. They know it also. I do not know what else works. Sent me back the money I paid for it. Wish their was another place to buy the original.

I wrote in a earlier review on Feb.19 that Rac Enterprise presently has the Mintek 1600 DVD Player. I received it a few days ago. It would not play any VCD. I shipped it back today at my expense. Rac did not supply a proper return address label to ship it back and UPS did not have a tracking code from them to send it back. I will be satisfied if the next unit is ok. I will update this site to let you know what happens. It might be that a faulty unit was sent to me.

I have bought a few DVD players to see if there is a big improvement over my currebt Mintek DVD 1600. I returned all of them. To my surprise I found a place which sells them. After buying all 4 of them in the Summer of 2003, they still are holding up. We had one where kids and Adult started to jam in the DVD and also force the tray where it got mis-aligned. I had take it apart and fix it myself. It works like charm.
I would like to know who sells these players still? Can't find them anywhere?
My vote still reminds 10 out of 10!
Just gave one the family today, was saving it for a rainy day. I was going to buy a Cyberhome 300 today, but passed on the deal for the family. I think they'll have more fun with the Mintek DVD 1600 as I am having.
Just two remain in my collection.
The best media that works in this device:
Verbatim 8x DVD+R works the best
Verbatim 4x DVD+RW works also
Maxell 4x DVD+R, DVD-R, 4x DVD+RW, DVD-RW
SONY CD-R, Memorex CDRW
VCD, SVCD
KVCD, SKVCD
MVCD, MiniDVD works on CD-R or CD-RW
DivX, Xvid when converted with DIKO as VOBs
I still to this day whay a lot of you have so much trouble with this unit with your blank media recording.

I originally bought this player for VCD's and SVCD's. It always played everthing I threw at it. My problem now and has been since I started burning DVD's is that it will not play DVD+R or DVD-R discs. It just comes up as no disc on the TV.
The interesting thing is that it will play DVD+RW and -RW discs. I have tried Memorex (Ricoh and Ritek) and Fuji (Ricoh, I think) without success. I burn everything with a Sony DRU-530A at 4x.
I have had this player for about 3 years. Any one have a clue what is going on here?

This is our family's 1st DVD player and since I had to convince my wife to switch from VHS to DVD, I had to go with the cheapest one I could find. I was pleasantly suprised with this player as I've never had a single problem with it nor have I had a DVD would not play in it. Even my own burned DVD+R's have played without any issues.
I like the fact that there is an individual subtitle track select button, an audio track select button and a video select button on the remote. There's also a FF and RW as well as a separate chapter forward and a chapter reverse buttons too. FF and RW move at 8x maximum speeds. The menu button is very handy to bypass all the junk and get you to the menu screen.
As for durablitly, my 18mo broke off the front of the DVD tray, knocked the player off it's shelf onto our hardwood floor, yet the player still keeps on ticking. My remote is now cracked all on the edges and has a large 1/4" hole/crack in the corner of the remote, but it still keeps on working. Note: hardwood floors are tough on electronics if you have small children ;)
In short, a great player with a great price. |

| Never had a problem with burned media as long as bitsetting is turned on. Cheap media, expensive media, generic media. It doesn't care, just be SURE and turn bitsetting on!! |

Back again, I've gotten a lot of email about what media works with the Mintek 1600.
Here we go:
Maxell DVD+R
Memorex DVD-R
I am currently sticking with Maxell DVD+R media, I get very good results from adding SVCD(MPEG2) to DVD-ISO and I'ved tried both VCD(MPEG1) with SVCD(MPEG2) to DVD-ISO works great! I can't see anyone having trouble burning a DVD+R or DVD-R to use on the Mintek 1600.
Make sure you have your system clean (HD, files an etc.) Install plenty of RAM no less than 768MB I use ECC double bank 168 DIMMS and no less than a PIII 500 MHz when you burn with Neo Ultra 6.x. Also make sure that your L2 Cache on your CPU is being seen by Windows XP or 2000? Use Tweakpowerpack or edit your registry to enable the 512 to 1G Cache. You need all the tweaks you can do on your PC. Results will be great!
So far all the Mintek 1600 players that I had purchased back in June 2003 work great even the one that was giving problems started to work 100% again.

Have a Lite-on 811s. To view a Memorex 4X DVD +R, you MUST use the bit setting utility available on the Lite-on site to change the book type to dvd-rom. Then it works just fine on the Mintek. The Memorex 4x +R is a RICOHJPN-R01-002.
Memorex 4x +rw works fine as is. It is a Philips.

Plays Raw ReplayTV files with a bit of help. There is no FF or Rewind. HQ ReplayTV files totally choke. Medium and Standard will sometimes freeze. To fix this, push the setup button on the remote, and then push it again.
It is very possible that it will not be able to recover from some choking on medium or standard quality, but I haven't seen it.
The problem with the no FF, and intermittant (but fixable) freeze is that you cannot simply play it back into your ReplayTV (Manual Recording) while you are away, because it might freeze. So these two problems both add up to a slightly irritable setup for me and I now have the *perfect* dvd player for ReplayTV raw mpeg files, the Aspire Digital 1100. |

This *was* a great player, but yet only after a year of owning it, the whole front circuit panel has died. It won't turn on (using the power button or remote), and I assumed even if I did get it to turn on, none of the buttons on the front panel would work anyways (open/close, etc).
I guess I got my $50 worth out of it, but this is insane. |

I own 4 of these players and have posted here before a while back.
Only 1 out of the 4 has acted up, so with a quick reset and a wait or two solves the problem.
The other 3 works great, I can make anything from the PC and dump it into the Mintek DVD 1600, VCD, SVCD(they all work, don't know how some of you are having so much trouble)
AVI-to MPEG1 also known as VCD I use NERO to SONY CDR but at 8X speed
KVCD MPEG1 I use NERO to SONY CDR but at 8X speed
SKVCD MPEG2 I use NERO to SONY CDR but at 52X speed.
When I say SONY CDR 48X ones can be burnt to 52X
For those of you who are having so much trouble, just reset this player and once done it will work again. To reset it just press certin key codes set it back to default. Some how along the way it gets re-programmed and makes it hack up, don't ask, but after the reset it works! There are web sites that tell you how to do it, just search with google.
This player also plays everything out there even SKVCD and KVCD without popping sound, like with the other players on the market.
DVD-R work great, I haven't cleaned my player yet. Sound is also excellent better than the others on the market.

ok I have been trying to get my Mintek DVD-1600 Player to run DVD-R Burned DVDs
I had tried DVD+R and recieved ''No DISC'' after the loading screen for a few seconds. when I tried the DVD-R on my player it just sits with ''Loading'' but nothing happens, now so far I have tried 3 different types of media ''Sony DVD-R'' KHypermedia DVD-R'' and the other was "TDK DVD-R" is there a type that works best on this player, also I have burned them with Clone DVD and DVDXCopy
What am I Doing Wrong

| Tried 3 of the 4 DVD formats (didn't try the -RW) and none would read. Same disks worked fine in other players. Discs were Memorex -R and Fugi +RW and +R. Pinnacle Studio 8 to burn discs |

| Bought this early this year. Under pressure to settle a debt, I was forced to give it away. Last month I bought an AMW v101. Plays everything but would freeze up towards the middle or end of any video disc. Fortunatly I was able to re claim the original 1600 that I had lost. Damn glad to have it back. It is one of the older models, and does it all. Won't make that mistake again. |
