xbox unmodded = decent at best
xbox modded = heaven play's everything including avc high profile (low setting low bitrate not recommended)main profile is recommended its not the best but it plays
i still recommend XviD if you do want to compress your movies /series with decent bitrates > 2000 (i don't like the low bitrate stuff :P unless it has a low res i'll watch it ...maybe:P)
or try the latest dvd player from the xbmc guys it rocks !!!! gotta love the upsampling on a lcd tv ;)
in short its a cheap mediaplayer and a damn good one at that ( yea its a pc in a box ..) try finding a good avc standalone dvd player... goodluck |

i use the xbox to stream xvid/divx/mp3/mpg from my pc to the tv, using the "xbox media center" (xbmc) software.
the streaming is handled by windows file sharing or the even simpler, ccxstream software.
the xbmc interface is outstanding and the divx/xvid/mpg streaming is flawless, even with my old pc.
you can also rip dvd and music discs from the xbox dvd player, directly to your pc (using windows file sharing). the ripping software is named dvd2xbox.
xbmc also has a winamp style 'visualization' feature named milkdrop (its sort of like a kalidescope)
its pretty cool on a big tv screen

I have a launch day Xbox, so it has the Thompson drive. It is not modded, as is.
I had not had any issues with the drive loading at all, until I started playing many DVD-R/+R movies on it. Right now, my drive acts up now and then, either having trouble loading a poorly treated game (a rental), or some movie play back issues.
With DVD-Rs, I can play them 90% of the time the first try. Sometimes I have to shut the Xbox down with the disc in, then restart it for it to recognize the disc. On play back, I will sometimes see visual blips or stutters. At the most, this is 3 times in a movie, usually toward the end of it as the Xbox has been playing for a hour or so. If I rewind, and play that same spot again, the problem dissapears. Formats used most often for success are TDK, Fuji, and Sony (as they are often cheap at Best Buy).
With DVD+Rs, I can rarely play them back. The quality of the burn, and the disc, has to be perfect. Cheap brands (like CompUSA) of DVD-Rs will play now and then, but DVD+Rs never play. I also have alot of problems playing back Sony DVD+Rs. It takes more tries to burn a DVD+R that will play back than tries to burn a DVD-R that the Xbox reads. I avoid DVD+Rs.
Now...DVD+R DL. This is why I came to this site, and this is why I'm writting this. My Xbox WILL NOT play DVD+R DL. I burned a movie to Memorex DVD+R DL, it came out perfect, and plays in one other DVD player of mine, but not the Xbox. It does not do the straining sound that it does when it is having trouble reading something, it scans the disc, and just says that it is not a compatable disc. Very dissapointing.
I have done reading up on bitsettings (book types) to try and solve this. I have read that this can help the Xbox read DVD+R DL. It turns out, my DVD-R/RW DL PC drive cannot change book types, so I'm screwed there. I will just watch those disc on my other dvd player, and compress the movie to watch it on my Xbox.

| I have an Xbox v1.0 with the dreaded Thomson drive. While my drive, like many others, has become slightly iffy over the years it still works 98% of the time. I have seen many posts stating that the Thomson drives will not play DVD+R discs. I can only speak from my personal experiences, but I have almost never had a problem having a decent-quality DVD+R disc read. DVD+RW is usually okay, but with the occasional exception. DVD playback using the MS player is serviceable if not particularly exceptional. I don't watch too many DVDs on the Xbox as I already have a better standalone player. Still, a modded Xbox with the appropriate player software will do flawless NTSC to PAL conversion and play pretty much any media file out there making it a great choice for a cheap "Media Center" device. |

New information about the DVD drives shipping in XBoxes:
There's a new Samsung - 605F - that can only play original DVDs and CDs, and a few DVD-Rs. Ritek G04 disks worked great, many others failed for me. So the old "Samsungs are the best" is dying out. This was in a brand new (late 2004) 1.6b Crystal XBox, and the DVD drive was date-stamped September 2004.
However, I bought a version 2 Phillips drive from elitemods.co.uk for £45, and that *does* read nearly everything I throw at it. One DVD-R type I've thrown at it, an old 2X disc that came with my burner 2 years back, doesn't read. This disc type also fails on my brother's stand-alone. Re-burned these films to new Ritek G04 discs and they play fine.
I then sold my Samsung 605F (with text explaining it didn't play CD-Rs) on eBay, and got £45 =O)
One happy bunny, with XBMC now playing everything I throw at it =O) |

| The main thing when looking for a used xbox is to look for the samsung dvd player. You can tell by looking at the tray. If there are 2 small holes than you have a samsung drive. This drive will read anything. If you have the most common drive, the thompson, it will only read RW media. I know this sounds strange, but it is the truth. I also have my xbox modded with a executer 2.2 lite chip. With the software media player I use my xbox will play most anything including all region dvds. |

Just purchased the XBOX the other week since they reduced the price by $50.
Came with the samsung 605 dvd drive.
Installed the Aladdin Advance 32 Mod Chip.
It plays every format of cd/dvd thrown at it.
DVD movies burnt to DVD+-R/RW all read flawlessly.
NOTE: Files/data burnt to dvd-r (excluding movies) are not recognised unless the data is first run through an xbox ISO creation tool. Data as ISO format is slightly different on XBOX as opposed to PC. But once this is done then dvd-r iso can only be read in the XBOX. Pc won't recognise dvd at all.
Reads any format cdr/rw thrown at it no matter what type of data/movie format it is in.
Out of the box the XBOX can not play dvds by default. In order to achieve this the purchase of a dvd remote control and dongle is required, Which of course is region coded to whatever country it is purchased in.
The XBOX becomes region free through the aid of a mod chip and a software package called dvd region x2. Which also eliminates the need for the purchase of the dvd remote/dongle. As all remote functions are emulated via the controller pad. |

this should not be rated as a dvd player
since it is a game console
all of its supposed features NEED a hack that COSTS extra money (unlike remote control hacks) , so either increase the price tag in the comparison, add the cost of expensive media against that cheap media other players dont mind about, because if we rate this as "has to be moded first" then there are a lot of very good dvd players that will also do many more things with a mod chip.
so it basically out of the box plays
original DVD's and you are stuck to one region once you use it.
MOD it and well, then i will put my PC here as a player, add bsplayer with a bootdisk or geexbox to it and have the PLAYITALL player with no hacks needed. |

Hi All. I love my brand new shiny Xbox. Out of the box it plays DVD movies recorded on DVD+RW discs using Nero 6.3, which was not the case with my old Sampo DVD player. But that’s about all it does from what I want it to do. I really would love to teach my Xbox new tricks. I don’t want to go crazy with or make it a Unix Box. But it would be very nice if this baby could serve me as a little simple media player. And at the same time I would like to preserve the built-in functionality and my legal user rights such as warranty and so on. Also, not being an electronics engineer, I hate to go through the hassle of modifying the hardware in any way.
Can someone please share his experience of using any media player for Xbox that doesn’t require any hardware modification or replacement of the original operating system with a patched version? All posts are greatly appreciated. Regards to all form New York. |

Ok here's the shpeil, the Xbox has 3 brands of DVD drives floating around. Phillips, Thomson, and Samsung.
The Samsung is the only one that reads CD-R's, but it will only read -r dvd's no +r's
The Thomson and Phillips will read + and - R's and CD-RW but no CD-R's.
An out-of-the-box Xbox is very limited, but an unlocked box has full capabilities, however this is not that topic's place.

The Xbox is an awesome machine for games and graphics but when playing other formats its very restrictive.
I have tried many formats which do not play. You would think since the xbox is basically a pc wrapped in a box it would play all media formats.
I recommend to buy a cheap APEX DVD player without all those filters.

Ok After a little work this thing is an all in one solution and a half.
First you'll need a mod chip (available at Xbox-scene.com) installed then you need to do the full dvd replacement with a samsung 616t or 616f (616frp available at Pricegrabber.com and compuvest.com)
but once you have them two things and the xbox media center program (available on IRC Efnet #xbins) the sky's the limit. I first replaced my dvd drive on it since mine died but I didnt think of how beneficial it would be. I now play all media besides MOV files on it.divx,xvid,mpeg,mpeg2 you name it. I burned mpegs and divx onto dvd-rs and cd-rs it works like a charm with a little work with the help of the tutorials at xbox-scene.com you too can be in total bliss. added addition is its network capable and can be streamed from your pc to it or moved over via ftp.

| Microsoft Xbox is a versatile machine. I havent tested it much with the kind of media it can play as i prefer only verbatim or memorex and it hasnt given trouble with either. as far as playing the media files are concerned it uses xbox media center or media player termed as xbmc/ xbmp. xbmc being enhanced version of xbmp which is almost dead now (last cvs build being 2 months ago and looks like all the developers are working for xbmc). xbmc even though hasnt released any official 1.0 version but since it started from the place where xbmp ended so it supports almost all the media types. apart from that you can also strem your digital content from XStream server via wireless or wired LAN. there are lot of useful homebrew utilities for xbox which can allow you to do variety of operations but they are basically for advanced users. Please note the prerequisite is to have a modchip installed and flashed with the latest stable bios. the best modchip is smartxx (yet to be released). |

A modded x-box, chip or no chip method, and xbox media player will play just about any file; unencrpted vob, mpeg, avi (divx, xvid), asf etc...mp3, wav etc..jpeg but appaently have to be copied to xbox harddrive.
I have the new version of the thompson drive, and it won't play any cdr or cdrw, but it has played every type of cheap dvd-r media i have burnt on my liteon 4X burner (LDW-451S), Ritek, maxdata, spider.
Used nero and the udf/iso option with force x-box compatibilty checked. Also one of the firmware updates for the liteon burner said "improve readability in standalone and xbox dvd players " so that may have helped my success too.

I use DVD-Shrink to re-author DVD Video's and have used very simple EMTECH DVD-R discs.
