Although this player has been used almost solely to play commercial DVDs, it's done so without a hitch.
However, a self-recorded DVD (DVD+R) movie which played fine on my computer failed to show up in this player (no media).

This is truely a magnificent little machine. Played most of what I threw at it including disks I'd previously thought were encoded incorrectly. I have experience with my original Apex AD600-A, my second attempt JVC XV-S300BK, two Pioneers I'd bought and returned for playing SVCDs in the wrong aspect, a Panasonic I'd bought and returned for playing SVCDs poorly, and various Sony's (probably others that left so little an impression I don't recall thier brand/model). You could say I've had the opportunity to use a good number of machines.

This cheap Malata was amazingly fast in everything I tested it with. Easily the fastest loading I've seen. Excellent picture, on par with my JVC XV-S300BK. Sound too was as expected from a digital medium.

Though the system doesn't have 'true' MP3 Long Filename (only twelve or thirteen characters), the menu system is presented in such a way that it was easy to navigate. If I were burning a disk specifically for use with this player it wouldn't be hard to arrange files in such a way that they are even more easily navigatable. No MP3 Id Tags.

Tests - Successful.

Started with SVCDs (various including ones burned that wouldn't play on either my Apex or JVC). All played flawlessly.

Next Maxell DVD-R loaded to capacity with MP3s. All tested played flawlessly.

Backed up DVD (DVD Decrypter/DVD Shrink) on Memorex DVD+R medium. Successful.

Tests - Failure.

Only one type of disk I threw in this machine had problems. I've gotten in the habit recently of burning SVCDs 2 or 3 movies at a time to a DVD+R using DVDLAB. They play flawlessly on my JVC so I know the disks work. But on the Malata DVP-500P there are issues. Although the generated menu systems work and the movies play there are bad audio sync issues. The longer the movie plays the worse it gets. Pause the movie and unpause and it resyncs but within two or three minutes the audio loses sync again. Again the disks play flawlessly on my JVC.

Recommendation.

The SVCD>DVD thing is a pretty uncommon thing as far as I know, not particularily mainstream. Unless you need this particular feature there is no reason to even consider any other players. The Malata's looks are appealing and the remote is typical. This little machine is amazing. Unfortunatly, its a the SVCD>DVD is a feature I want, so tomorrow I continue my search for the Holy Grail of DVD players.

Great player for the price. I've thrown quite a few brands of dvd-r media at it and it played them flawlessly. I'm currently sticking with Ritek G04's, although cheaper Princo 4x's work fine as well. As mentioned by another poster, the only version to get is the Sept model!! No problems with skipping or pausing on layer changes on this model.

I haven't really tried svcd/vcd compatibility, but every one I tried worked flawlessly. Other more in-depth reviews have been very positive about svcd/vcd playback.

Couple nice features - dvd-mp3 disks work great, and you can randomize songs across folders too! Toss some .jpg's on the dvd and you can have a random slide show while random mp3's play in the background!

One thing I wish it had though was long filename support for mp3's.... but for the price, you really can't beat it for features and ability to read burned media that players 4 times as much can't handle.

Cheap is the word for this player, both price wise and quality. Been burning a lot of dvd-r lately and find that on some if pauses during chapter change, and sometimes in middle of chapter. Sometime you can rewind and it will go away sometimes in wont. And i have tried lots of different media. And these dvd-r play fine on other players. Mp3 feature is good, and jpeg viewing is also a good feature but no matter what i pay for a dvd player i want it to work flawlessly. I as most of you bought this at futureshop, and bought the extended warrenty, I will be returning this with in the next weeks, please if you have returned this to futureshop let me know if you got an exchange or they made u wait for ever to repair it,,,,,

I am going to try to return my Oct 03 unit today as it "freezes" for about 1 second every minute on some DVDs - very annoying.

It is intermitent e.g. the School House Rock and Finding Nemo letterbox DVD exhibit this problem, but the Finding Nemo fullscreen DVD didn't?! No other DVD has shown this problem.

Comments:
WARNING TO POTENTIAL BUYERS: Before you buy one of these units, check the date it was made (you'll have to open the box and look at a sticker on the back of the player).

- pre-Sept 2003 units are not region-hackable.
- October 2003 units (like the one I have) are regionfree (and a test of 4 RCE discs seems to show they are RCE immune!) out of the box, BUT they have problems with audio and video pausing during some DVDs, for example at chapter breaks during Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
- September 2003 units are the ones to get.

See more on all this in the Malata forum at nerd-out.com

My Malata 500p is going back to the store this weekend.

My first DVD player and seems fine so far (for the $79 CAN at Future Shop.)Played my Region 0 PAL DVD perfectly. Plays MP3's but annoyingly only shows first few characters of title in menu. Also, when in zoom mode the zoom factor is always dislayed in the corner of the screen - anyone know how toget rid of it??

Comments:
This would be a really nice player if it also had good picture quality! The one I got has some quite visible wavy lines superimposed on the picture. They are only visible when using the Component output, and they appear mostly during heavy motot activity (loading/unloading, disc spinning up/down, searching etc). This indicates poor power supply DC filtration. Too bad... they just couldn;t get it right! I could fix it myself, but I'd have to void the warranty...

The cheapest 5.1 RCA analog output DVD player by far on the market, great for a cheap DVD home theater made with 5.1 analog computer speakers. Combine with an Altec-Lansing 251 gives a great quality/price ratio.
