I'm only writing this review to say that this is NOT a portable player unlike what it might say up top. Just because a player is small in size doesn't make it portable.

I bought a second unit today (bought one for my girlfriend 6 months ago, still running fine). Before buying it again i shopped a lot for another portable dvd player and couldnt find anywhere else what the dvp-393 can offer me. I must say that i wanted a portable player so I only looked for compact/small dvd players. I chose this one for the following reasons:
-compact/small and very GOOD LOOKING (yes it matters to me :)
-Can turn it REGION FREE in seconds with remote (cant be easier than this)
-Plays about any formats (except divx)
-3 video outputs: S-video, composite, COMPONENT
-2 audio outputs: Stereo and coaxial
This player is NOT progressive scan but you can connect it with INCLUDED COMPONENT CABLE (altough cheap silver plated ones) for better image quality. I have searched hours on the net to find portable players with component out and i can say that it is very rare.
I tested my new player with mp3 disk and worked great. You can place songs in folders and player will change folders automatically when all the songs in a folder are finished. Can also play songs randomly. Never used a dvd player for listening to music before but i think i cant ask more with what ive seen with this player. Not sure if i will use that tough.
Also tried a picture cd and everything (image quality, menu) was good. My region 3 dvds are perfectly working too with the region free hack posted in the forum.
I had made a svcd before to test on different dvd players for my friends but it never worked so i didnt expected this one to work in my player but it did perfectly! Image was perfect for svcd.
About the remote. Heard some people complaining about it. Ok it doesnt look like a normal remote, its very small and there is like a plastic that cover all the surface. Personnaly i found that look good and think about this: You cant pull out a button like on a normal remote and built this way it seems like its kind of waterproof (even if you spill liquids on it the liquid wont enter in the remote, altough it seems so! :)
So i give this player a 9 because it fills MY need perfectly. And by the way, all test i did with this dvd player (mp3 cd, jpg cd, svcd cd...) were my first ones on a dvd player so im not an expert and everything that i tried worked.
Also heard there is now the Malata DVP-393a on the market. This one is supposed to have progressive scan... |

I had bought myself a DVP-393 recently and I ended up returning it. Remote did not work at all and it would not read my burned DVDs. There were a mix of Maxell and Memorex -R,+R,-RW and +RW. The interface menu was pretty primitive and it's MP3 capabilities very limited.
I ended up getting myself the Koss KD305-2 instead for 70$ which also has progressive scan. Good quality mahcine that ready all my DVDs and played my MP3s flawlessly. It also has a very nice interface menu.
Plus the warranty on it is one year as opposed to only 3 months for the Malata.

| Everything works as advertised. Picture is great. It even comes with component video cables. However, to get the component outputs fully working, one must use the remote to set it up. It is default to S-Video output. READ the user's manual. Also, there is no power on indicator. However, for the price ($45 cdn), it is still a great bargain. |

| OK after having connected this player to a Memorex VCR and then to an old TV I was surprised to find that the unit did not produce any macro-vision distortions at all!!! I did nothing to this unit but take it out of the box. It only cost me $45 Canada dollars at futureshop. That’s about $35 US wow. It’s very small and the remote sucks but my DVD-R and DVD+R disks played perfectly. I used both princo 4x/2x and Memorex 4x media that was copied with DVDXCOPY and have had no problems. SVCD and VCD played with no trouble. The only problem I had was that my unit’s component outputs didn’t work but I’m going to return it tomorrow and get a replacement unit. I recommend that anyone who wants a cheap player get one of these things while they are on sales at this price. |

Although the remote control is a bit too cheap....the machine itself works great. I got it at futureshop for $59.99 CAD and I asked the salesperson and he told me it was not multi-region..but I went here and found out that even if it isn't I could hack it..voila~ I buy the machine, go home and it IS multiregion (without any hacking..great!)..
it works for my dvds (region 1 or 3), vcds (burnt or brought) and mp3 cds..it even does a shuffle on tracks (if you want) or it can just play 1 track it can play an entire directory/disc.
It's a great buy~ |

Solid Machine!
True Region Free built into it. It plays everything I threw at him.
It may not be the best quality machine, but for the price, it's worth it! |

Great player for the money. ($59.99 cdn) Unit plays every disk I have tried so far, including many that will not play on my far more expensive JVC unit.
Will view a data DVD-R as if it was a data CD-ROM and will view images and play mp3's off the disk
Views mpg video files off of a data disk but so far I have not had any actually play...this isn't something I normally use so I'm not sure on how functional it is at this task, but it does display them as a file you can play in the browser.
Unit is really nice and small...great if you are pressed for space, and with the exception of the remote, seems fairly well made.
Remote is the main drawback of this unit...it is fairly cheap, having the softkeys you normally would see on a diskman type remote...Functional but time will tell if it wears out quickly or not.
No power indicator...hard to know if unit is on or off without looking at the TV. Some would say this is a disadvantage, while others would say it is a feature as you don't have lights glowing at you while trying to watch a movie.
Other features:
Volume control on remote
Will slideshow images
Displays all files on data DVD/CD-ROM in file browser
Component video output
Unit includes rca a/v and component video cables in box
Coaxial Digital output can be enabled via menues and will provide dolby digital and dts signals. Works for audio as well as video., but must enabled to do this. Has an option for 96khz.
Overall a fantastic little player for the money, and seems to work better than the more expensive brands. |

| Just to update...the region free code works great. Too bad it can't play straight Mpegs burned onto CD-R or DVD-R as well as DVD-/+RW. I spent $10CAD more and bought the Norcent DP-300 and was able to do just that. |

| DVD-RW causes DVD player to lock. Can only be unlocked by pulling the power cord out of the electrical socket and plugging it back in after 15 seconds (reboot). There are supposed to be hacks for the region and macrovision but they aren't included in the current model, even though the manual says that a region hack IS available from the setup menu. Malata (Canada) says that a firmware upgrade will be made available but in the fast moving world of DVD players, it's taking too much time and people aren't willing to wait. It's not a bad player for the price ($60 CAD) and it does quite a bit out of the box that a lot of other players can't but without the Macrovison and Region hacks maybe it's only good for a kid's room. Get the Liteon LVD-2001 either from USA sources or (soon) Canadian sources if you are in North America. A much better player... |
