Just tried DVD-R DL with a backup of a DVD9 using Decrypter in ISO Read/ ISO Write Mode. To my surprise, worked flawlessly.
Fussy with DVD-RW: Needs at least 4GB of data on the disk to recognize it.
Very good NTSC-PAL conversion.
Bought it over 2 years ago and bothing to complain about. |

I only have one type of media currently. All 2.4X SONY DVD+RW (RICOHJPN).
The ripped and reauthored DVD movies play just fine on the N996, just not the home-authored ones.
Have tried 99.9% of all published guides and help on this forum.
Will Update if successful!

I had problems with any DVD-RW media until I found the follwing hint on another website which solved the problem completely: "I have not found a DVD-RW that would not play on my 996. Admittedly, I have only tried 3 brands: Memorex, Ritek, and DVD-Pro. All work fine with my A04. Memorex works best for reburning. Ritek and DVD-Pro will not always erase properly.
The one problem I have had with the Malata is that if the disk size is much under approximately 2.8 gb the 996 will NOT recognize it. Try to keep your burn between 3 - 4.3 gb. The smaller disk sizes will play fine on most desktop players, but not on the 996. It is definitely a Malata quirk!" |

The player has a big variety of formats, which he can play. Maybe the best achievment is the integrated conversion from PAL to NTSC, so you can watch PAL DVDs on your NTSC TV (which is normally only possible the other way around).
When it comes to reliability and error correction, the Malata is horrible. Even the slightest dirt on the DVD makes it stop and ask for cleaning. It gets worth, when the player takes up some heat. Also, you get a lot of reboots, specially when you change the medium (from DVD to CD or from NTSC DVD to PAL DVD).
The conclusion is, that it is a cheap modell, where they tried to integrate as much formats as possible without paying too much attention on reliability (which doesn't sell). If you need a DVD player in North America for watching European DVDs (which are PAL or SECAM), this one is definately the right thing. |

| An excellent workhorse player. I've had it for 16 months and not one skip or freeze up.(DVDs or cds)Activate, turn off the player by push button, not remote.Apparently it doesn't totally power down and THAT may cause overheating. Other than that, highly recommended multi region player.Top notch PAL to NTSC conversion. |

I like this player but doing a firmware update is difficult (requires soddering!) and without the upgrade the player freezes and skips on some DVDs during playback. I have had the skipping problem only on Anime titles during high action sequences.
This player DOES NOT play XVCDs which is a major pain as my previous player did and many of my CDs are in XVCD format. It also DOES Not play XSVCD - at least with the test file I downloaded and burned from this site.
When the disk does play without skipping the quality is excellent.
The remote control is poorly designed and a pain to use. If you buy this unit you will want to program a universal type remote to use with this and throw out the manufacturers remote (..or stick it in a drawer and never look at the POS again!). |

The best DVD player I ever had, truly a holy grail, not only for its known perfect PAL to NTSC and NTSC to Pal conversion and multiregion capabilities along with built in DTS/DD decoders and various zoom and video filters, progressive, loaded with features, but also plays any disc I've ever tried on it, any format, any media, any region.
Recently I've aquired a Pioneer DVR-A04 burner and recorded a few DVD movies on Princo DVD-Rs and they play flawlessly on Malata, recorded with PrimoDVD software v2.0.8 so anyone thinking of doing that, this is the proven way by me. Did not play unbranded crappy DVD-R but Princo works fine and I'm sure Apple and Memorex and other better media will surely work as well. This player is the best! |

Beautiful picture. Superb PAL-NTSC conversion.
The only downside is inability to play SVCD subtitles (tried both CVD and native) and SVCD multiple audio tracks.
Also, the unit requires some setup changes if used with a component TV-in. |

Burned an NTSC VCD CD-R, a PAL SVCD CD-RW and a MP3 CD-R. All played without problems with PAL to NTSC conversion.
Very happy with the player, not given a 10 because I'm sure it's not perfect but so far so good. |

Plays everything you put in it except for miniDVD.
Don't care about the brand of the CD-R.
Progressive scan for both PAL and NTSC. Excellent conversion PAL-NTSC and viceversa. Plays MP3 discs with variable rates tracks. |

So far has played every VCD and SVCD disk (NTSC or Pal) I have burned. Does an excellent job playing CD-R's & CDRW's. So far I have burned Maxell, Digital Media,& Memorex media with success. Have not tried any other media.
Plays MP3's without a hitch, but tags must be removed first. Have only tried 192kbit/s. No shuffle mode.
This is a progessive scan player that will play NTSC or Pal disk in any region. It can output any NTSC disk to a Pal TV or any PAL disk to a NTSC receiver.
Strong points:
Excellent video quality in either NTSC or PAL. Probably does a better job of NTSC/PAL conversion than any other player.
Weaknesses:
Clunky remote; small buttons all look the same.
Malata is not a brand name, available only from limited number of suppliers in the U.S.
Long term reliabilty unknown factor.
