Ok heres the deal...
I've used this player for some time now and have no complaints. It plays everything that I throw at it BUT..( you knew it was coming )I tried to burn MP3s to a DvD and nothing happens it tells me that the disc is wrong type or something to that nature. Now, I see from others on here that the MP3-DVD format does work for them, I just want to know what they are doing different so I too can use the MP3-DVD ability with my player thanks in advance for any advice. |

Well, i have read thru several of the comments left here and MOST of the problems appear to be ESO errors. An ESO error is simply a term we use in the South, Equipment Superior to Operator.
Several formats listed as not playable ARE playable. I believe it would not kill the majority of the posters, not all just the majority, to learn how to re-encode files. Bit rates play a big part of why or why not on a file on your disc. This is the common reason some of you cannot get certain types of movies to play on certain types of disc formats.
I will enclose some info to hopefully educate people in order to allow them to make an accurate assessment of their players abilities and inabilities.
http://www.riverpast.com/en/support/tutorials/convert/divx/divx.php
Software that converts X to X will suffice for most people, such as WinAVI,VSO or Ashampoo ( the worse of the bunch)
utilizing these softwares you can, without re-encoding ( which is for people really picky like myself) drag and drop your file in its current format and click and convert it to a format of your choosing. Formating from X to AVI is fast and simple. Some Bit rates will give you problems and unless you wish to take the time to re-encode from the ground up, just go DL another torrent version of your file.
Good luck to all.
Education is better than debasing.
This product, while subpar on its over all abilities, is still well worth the money spent and great for the new torrent/dvd ripper who wishes to not spend 1-2 hours burning vob files :) |

I am totally happy with this player. This replaced an earlier Magnavox that served me well for several years. The attraction to this player was the DivX/XviD playback abilities.
I updated the firmware on my DVD burner to support automatic bitsetting - it changes the booktype to DVD-ROM for DVD+R/DVD+RW. Burning DVD+Rs with DivX files on them with this option enabled has allowed this player to play back XviD files on +R media. I cannot comment on how the +R playback works without bitsetting as I had this option enabled prior to burning my first disc.
I've played back about 20 XviD/DivX titles with perfect quality, no synch problems. The only caveat is that there is a brief (~5 second) pause when starting titles. The player jumps to the next track automatically when playback has completed.
The seek option for XviD files is limited to 3x. This can be overcome by using the remote button to enter in a timestamp to jump to. Again, this works flawlessly.
My only disappointment with this player, in my limited testing, is that it does not seem to support MP3 CDs at all. This is odd to me since it would seem that the codec is definitely installed, and my earlier Magnavox (that did not support XviD) supported this.
In summation, I am totally happy with this player, have, and will recommend it totally to others. Its a $37.77 player, for me $39.99 after tax, that has made archiving recorded programs much easier and efficient. |

| Got the subtitles to work in DivX by following instructions in the user manual. First you must activate "DivX Subtitles" in the "Setup --> Custom" menu. Then you pick the subtitle file after playback begins. Of course, the subtitle file must be burned in the same directory as the movie, and have the exact same file name. Mine uses the "SRT" extension, looks okay. |

Well, here's some more info for those of you who are looking into buying the Magnavox 7006 DVD Player. After using this for a couple of months I have more of a complete idea of what this thing can and cant do. Basicly It plays all divx/xvid. All SVCD and VCD, havent tried XSVCD or XVCD. It will not play Mp3s, or WMA's, Wavs, or any other type of new age audio, just regular ol 80 min CD's. It will not read Jpgs or jpegs, bmps, pngs or any other type of still format. The remote for this thing is a piece of $hit although it does have a lot of features on it. Square and non ergonomic with very low power. The FF/RW functions aer hideous on this model though, on a DVD it goes 1-5 settings for FFW [not 2x-32x like the better models), I dont know what the numbers represent [my DVR has REW and FFW controls with the 1-5 thing too)but on the 5 setting its about 1 min per sec so a 90 min movie would take 1.5 mins to FFW through. That I can handle, but on the Divx side the player has ffw/rew settings of 1-3 with 3 being the fastest at a whopping 10 secs per 1 sec totaling 9 mins to FFW though a 90 min movie. This is pretty lame, i really dont think this model has the Mediatek chipset in it with performance like that [I'm comparing it to my other DiVx player, a Philips DVP5140 which is another good model that goes for about $50]. One thing I do love is the LONG filenames this player Allows. None of my other players allow 25 char file names like this one. [The Philips allows 15, boooo]. Just this feature alone made me love this player. There is one issue with the DivX playback that I noticed. For some reason when playing certain DVD's with Xvid DivX movies, it plays them in letterbox format and theres no way to change that. The file itself is not in letterbox format since it plays fine on the PC [plus, no one rips DVDs to Xvid in letterbox format]. About 1 in every 40-80 Xvid DVD's do this, so its not too bad just annoying. I dont think this is a problem with this particular model, because my Philips does it too on the exact same movies. So I believe most likely its just a glitch with the Xvid standard that will probably be fixed soon. But if anyone knows exactly what type of encoding causes the movies to do this please let me know so i can re-encode the wierd ones to play right. [ejofifs@hotmail.com] The Screensaver really isnt a screensaver at all since it has no motion to it, LOL. And theres no auto off on this player so I wonder if theres people out there who got "DVD Video Magnavox" burned into thier tv's. Load times
are about the same as other models with it taking 6-7 seconds to read and load the DVD menu and about 10 secs to load the movie itself... decent. Overall, this is a pretty kick ass DVD player. I know the review sounds a little bit negative but if you are looking for a Xvid player for under $40 then this is for you [all the Wal-Marts in CA. have this model on the shelf for $37.77] I was so satisfied with this player I bought 3 more! If you are looking for a bit better Xvid player then check out my review for the Philips DVP5140. |

| I am the same reviewer as below. Just wanted to add that this player will not play Mpg burned as data (mpeg-iso). I originally thought that it was due to the disc having a mix of xvid and mpg files, but it just doesn't play mpeg-iso. I still give it an 8 for it's xvid/divx playback and low price. |

This baby was actually $40 WITH tax, and I should rate it a 9 for it's functionality to price ratio. Several things make me drop it to an 8 though:
1) It will not recognize .mpg files or .jpg files on a DVD that has xvid/divx files also.
2) Could not get it to recognize subtitles (in .sub format with all settings to English)
3) Has trouble with really large resolutions (higher than 640x480) in xvid files.
Other than that, it plays everything xvid, divx, vcd, jpg, etc. So I give it an 8.
Does anyone know how to "trick" it to recognize .jpg or .mpg files on a disc that also contains xvid/divx files? |

| pretty good dvd player. roomate has a 5disc xvid capable dvd player but they would skip constantly.. so i went and bought this.. plays XviD great, only had trouble with 2 movies, but i have a feeling its more the encoding on the movie then the dvd player. it loads the xvid very fast (hit play and 2sec later its loaded, roomates took sometimes 30sec). im going to get a DL burner but cant find any reviews to see if this will play the DL disc with xvid files. oh well for the price its a great deal, and mine came with 2 remotes (not sure if it was a mistake or not) |

| All my divx's that I made my self work "I stay within certified format when I encode. So whats my b!tch to give it a three if it plays all my Divx's? Easy it does not format my widescreen movies correctly it stretches W and H instead of just scaling with to the sides like ever movie playing program on a PC. I see what they were thinking they presumed that everybody leaves the black bars at the top and bottom when they encode a wide screen movie. When like 90%+ cut them off when they encode a movie or TV show thats wide screen. It stupid to make such a ma stake when its so noticeable. |

I've tried XVid files with this that gave good playback but no audio, this player doesn't play PCM audio.
Also, for someodd insane reason, it won't play generic Microsoft MP4 video (such as that used in the MST3K DAP releases, one of the reasons I tested this machine to begin with).
Ahwell, easily fixed by reencoding the videos. Still a pain in the butt, however.
Hopefully someone will release a hacked rom for it soon, because the flaws are incredibly stupid. The decoder chip should do far more. |

I bought this player for its advertised DIVX abilities, and it did not let me down in that regard. I did not find any DIVX files burned to data ISO DVDs that did not play. In fact, I specifically tried some files that my Philips DVP642 could not play at all. To my surprise the MWD7006 played them all. DVD's were Memorex 16x DVD-R and GQ 16x DVD+R. Both worked.
Unfortunately, that's where the good news ends. Many of my DVD iso's have a mix of MPEG2 and DIVX files and while all DIVX files were recognized no MPEG2 files are recognized at all: it filters them out of the directory listing. This is odd, as the manual suggests this should work, but there are several foot notes making it sound like you must have the exact specification MPEG2 the player expects. I wish I knew what this was.

Oppose to other reports I could successfully select and load divx subtitles:
- File name must be identical to the .avi file
- Used a .sub extension
- subtitle and avi file was on the same directory
- Divx subtitle = english at language menu on Setup *** this is key
.
Also although the manual said the opposite I also could successfully play DIVX files recorded on a DVD+R TDK Brand 1-16x
.
Surprisingly I could not play any MP3 files. Always get an invalid format message.
.
As of july 14 could not find any hack for this unit, that is bad because I intend to use it in Brazil which region 4.
.
Despite those limitations I still think it worth the 37 bucks paid at Walmart.
.
Regards.

Well, I bought this player today, despite the above 3 ratings, specifically to "see for myself" how/IF it works.
I can say that so far, I've burned several DVD's with DIVX 6.0/6.1 content on them to generic "Office Depot" DVD+R discs and Maxell DVD-R discs, and haven't had a problem with any of them -- the player has successfully played them.
I'll make a few other tests over the next week or so and see how it performs, but so far I'm impressed with it. Even if the ONLY thing it will do for me is play my DiVX files, that's good enough for me.. :) |

this player will NOT recognise +R or +RW dvds with DivX files on discs. it will give you a disc load error. the owners manual backs this up
has "some" luck with -R and -RW DivX files on dvd
will play DivX on CDs with no problems
will play all + or - dvd media except RAM if formatted dvd-video files are on disc (video_ts type)
I tested the DivXtestCD disc v 2.0 and 1.1.
it ignored most of the compatibility tests and did less than average on the ones that it did recognise.
IMO it's not a "keeper". I will be sending it back to wally with a bang as it hits the return counter.
it will play QPEL
it does not like DivX subs of any kind
the subs it does play are far below the bottom of the viewable part of the screen (yes I have a test pattern generator, the TV is just fine)
will not play wmv
it makes it past the first 75% of the crash tests
will not play MP4 hi def
has that foul language blocker / TVG capability if you activate for 20.00 on the net... add 5.00 to telephone it in (big scam)
disc loader tray opens out all the way, unlike some that open half way out.
39 button remote (all you should ever need).
3 screws opens top with no void stickers on case

| Just picked this player up from Wally-World last night. Tried one of my VCD'd concerts, and it played with no problems. It also played DVD-r's, as well as CDR music..... Now if only I can find a way around to make it Region Free. |
