The MRV640 works fine for me and has for 12 months. Although the keys can take a little getting used to (i.e. FF and Next are the same). Also, when editing a disc and "hiding" chapters, they still show up on other players even after the disc has been finalized.
The only major problem is that when it can't recognize a disc, it sometimes won't eject. You can force a tray open eject by unplugging the unit (not just powering off), then on the front panel, hold down both the RECORD and EJECT buttons at the same time then plug the unit back in. This will force an eject (try finding that tip elsewhere - heh!). I cannot confirm that this tip will work with the seemingly common "Blocking" problem as I have not experienced it myself. This is definitely worth a try if you cannot remove the disc and before you trash the unit.

Got this unit open-box at Best Buy for $50 in January 2006. Overall I am quite pleased with the unit. There are quirks, including:
--slow responsiveness when controlled from the remote
--when fast forwarding, relatively choppy playback with few frames shown
--no separate chaper/ff/rew buttons
--component input cannot handle progresseive (screw you macrovision)
On the plus side, picture quality when recording is quite good, especially of course at the higher quality 2/2.5/3 modes. I have recorded from an amplified OTA tuner and a Motorola DVR. The MRV640 has handled both sources quite well.
The menu system is easy to understand after the first couple of uses. The unit also has many a/v inputs, including a rare component. Disc compatibilty has been excellent. I have recorded without problems to Imation DVD+R and TDK DVD+RW media. DVD-R media plays back perfectly, though the manual says the disc must be finalized.
I also have a circa-2003 Magnavox DVD player, and DVD+RW discs from the MRV-640 play in that unit WITHOUT having been finalized. This is a great feature and allows me to avoid the somewhat crummy fast-forward of the 640. Even the menu structure is intact. I have yet to test unfinalized disc playback on other machines.
A good choice for a basic DVD recorder, though at this point you will very likely only be able to find it used/open-box/refurbed. |

I have no experience with other machines, so my rating is very subjective. I have had only problem with the machine since I got it. It froze up after recording. I had to reset the machine and then the disc was unreadable. I used the emergency restore function for the disc - it took about two hours, but the data on the disc except for the title I last recorded was intact. Very good last-chance feature.
The 1, 2, 2,5, and 3 hour settings are excellent. I wouldn't bother with the others. Transferring my old VHS tapes couldn't be easier, which is good since they are falling apart after 15 to 20 years.
Not having forward/backward search buttons is a pain - I keep skipping chapters. But in its defense, most DVD players these days consolidate too (you have to hold the chapter search buttons down for forward/backward search). My old Gen1 Samsung had separate buttons, but the new ones don't. The remote also doesn't have an eject (open drawer) button, but if you hold down the stop key, it will open. It would have been nice if they mentioned that somewhere - I found out by accident.
When you finalize a disc, it leaves a selection box for an empty title after all the filled title slots. Doesn't really matter, but I just don't like seeing that blank box - a trivial matter.
The biggest gripe is that it makes a clicking noise when in standby mode (off). It won't go away. Very strange. I hope it doesn't wear it out.
The DVD+R media means I have to also buy DVD-R for my computer, but that's not Magnavox's fault.
I've been using OfficeMax media with not a single bad disc, though I believe they are on the second tier of media quality.
The machine is rather complicated, but after some use you get the hang of it, and it becomes second nature. Timer recording and one-touch recording is quite simple.
I'm pretty happy with this machine considering I only paid around $100 for a refurbished unit.

I got it at XS Cargo for CDN$130 (refurbished) and the unit rocks! I test the unit a lot just to be sure that it works perfectly. I used Memorex DVD+RW 4x without any problems. It took me 5 minutes to install and 10 to know how everything works. Please, read the manual, everything is explain in it.
With Standard cable the quality is superb in M1, M2, M2.x and M3, the M4 is VHS equivalent and M6 and M8 are VHS equivalent only if there is not a lot of movement (ex. perfect for the daily Soap show my mom wants to watch back to back on the weekend).
I “taped” a couple of shows and none of them erased the other ones. Be sure you use the right compression setting when you record your shows. If you Recording an hour show at M1 and record a 2 hours long movie right after at M2, you sure will loose the show you recorded before.
The unit is a bit slow on changing channel and on switching from monitor to TV but the little flaws are not enough of big problem for me to return the unit. I would recommend the unit to everyone.

Bought this on clearance at BestBuys for $129. It replaced a CyberHome 1600 that turned 2/3's of the DVD's I tried to burn into coasters. That Cyberhome unit would even fail a disc one day that was successful the day before, and also after having added several previous reordings! Grrr.... Took it back and bought this Magnavox.
100% of the DVD's I have made work! All are tested on a standard Apex player as well and do fine. I do not hear the machine noise one poster mentioned. As others have said the manual is an effort, but contains a lot of info. This recorder is several times more capable of settings & tweeks than the CyberHome and it takes a little while to learn about them. |

After being disappointed with the Centrios EDW8020, I tried the Magnovox MRV640.
This unit failed to recognize Phillips, Verbatim or TDK Media, so I was not able to test recording.
The tuner quality was acceptable, but not the best. The image was not completely clear, and the color was different than what my TV and VCR displayed.
The OSD was impossible to navigate without having to reference the half inch thick manual. I dont think anyone could intentionally design anything more confusing.
Another negative point was the noise this unit generated. There is an internal fan, and the drive motor runs whenever the tray is closed, even if there is no disk. This was very annoying when just using the tuner to watch TV.
One positive of this unit is that tuner and DVD playback can be done through the coax output. This is an advantage for those with older TV's.
Needless to say I returned this unit. I have since purchased a CyberHome CH-DVR 1600 which I am very happy with.

Pros:
- Video quality is very good; even the 8 hour mode seems comparable to VHS. Analog camcorder recording in 2 hour mode is indistinguishable from the original.
- Can timer record using VCR Plus codes.
- Inexpensive Ridata 4x DVD+RW discs work well.
- Low cost; purchased for $149 at Best Buy.
Cons:
- Playback of DVD+R and DVD-R discs created on a DVD drive is unreliable, so don't plan on this replacing your DVD player. I tried 6 different brands, all playable on my 3 DVD players: 2 aren't recognized at all and 3 have very choppy playback.
- Manual is not well-organized.
- Magnavox support site has minimal information and no firmware updates. |

| The owner's manual is somewhat confusing (and I consider myself somewhat intelligent) but persistance (and patience) paid off. Once I got it going, the machine, frankly, worked like a charm. Love the multitude of recording speeds, the fact that you can insert very specific chapter, change index pictures and background. I have burned about 50 discs since I first got it and haven't had a bad one yet. |

I've had this unit for 4 months now. It's my first DVD recorder and I'm really happy with it. I'm fully aware it has limitations but I wasn't expecting much more than a digital VCR replacement. I got it on sale at BestBuy for $149.99. What more can you want for that price?
Pros:
very reliable
quality recording of TV signal
recordings can be played anywhere
Cons:
slow reaction times
remote is a bit clumsy and missing an eject key (thanks to poster above for Stop button tip)
manual is not very clear and missing some information (i.e.using Remote to eject)
Overall, I'm very happy with this considering the horror stories I've read on this site with other Recorders not working.
If I saw it on sale again, I'd buy another for the living room. |

Not having used another home DVD recorder before, I am unsure what rating to give this device. However, it has been a mixed bag of good and bad. I've had trouble with it recording over a previous days program when using Timer mode and a DVD+RW. I usually setup Timer to record two or three programs before I get a chance to watch them, and sometimes I find the first program to be missing. I also find the FF on the remote to be frustrating. 4x FF is too slow when skipping through commercials and 8x is way to fast (its more like 50x than 8x). I hope a firmware is made soon that addresses these problems.
However, the picture quality is fine as is the sound. |

This is a great value for the money!!!
$188 at bestbuy.
Yes, could have better remote; yes the menus are a bit cumbersome
But if you take the time and read the manual you will find the little tricks and tips you need on the
TIPS area, and it work like a charm
Primary use to record from TV via timer when not at home.
I have recorder on all video modes; the 4 hours and the 6 hours are the best for the TV.
I have had 6 different recordings done at different items into one DVD+RW with no problems.
Plenty of inputs, also it has COMPONENT inputs (will not do progressive input thanks to macro vision and Hollywood) and one OUT besides the regular s-video.
REMOTE CONTROL TIPS:
FF/REWW keys:
Press once and will forward and reverse 1 chapter
Press and hold the FF/REW key, it will FF/REW the movie, once in this mode press again to do 4x 8x 16x use.
There is not eject button on the remote but:
Press STOP once the movie will stop.
Press and hold the stop key it will eject the DVD.
The most important think is: Take your time and RTFM (read the freaking manual)
Desired info:

Bought Magnavox from BestBuy for $179. Used it to convert home movies to DVD. See my other DVD recorder experiences below.
I rated this one an 8 because compared to the others it is an 8. It could still have a better remote (distinct FF/REW and chapter FF/REW keys) and a better interface to titleing, chapter digest display, etc.
Note: When titleing a recording I found that instead of just using the UP and DOWN keys to scroll you can use the number keys. The key is to grab your telephone and use it as a legend. For example, for the letter "a" press 2 key once. For the letter "c" press it 3 times. For the number "2" press the 2 key 4 times. You'll find other characters too. Not sure how to jump to upper case yet.
I did have one DVD burn session cause the unit to just turn off. This was one out of about 20. I called tech support and at first the guy acted like he had never heard of the problem. Then later he offered to send me a firmware update CD. I have not received it yet but will let you know what happens.
For web site info, go to http://www.p4c.philips.com/ and enter model number of "DVR640/17" and a page will pop up. Not a lot of info on it but does have some.
I bought LiteOn LVW5101 from Sam's and it kept failing to record, problems with media, shaky video from camcorder, etc. I bought a Ilo from Walmart and opened it up and found that it was the same as the LiteOn - just older firmware. |

DVD +RW playback quality is great!
The damn menu is SO DAMN CONFUSING (sorry for yelling).
The machine simply does not have to be this difficult to operate/navigate!!!
HoWeVeR
The owner's manual is unbelievable non-explanatory!!!
Some Advice
I Timer record also, what I do is press the OTR button for the 3-4 seconds to go to the end of the last recording, and then hit standby to go into Timer recording mode, and it does not record over previously recorded material! From now on, I think I will only use DVD+R disks when I transfere from my old VHS tapes, and the DVD+RW for temporaray recordings.

Purchased @ Circuitcity for 179.00 on sale. CC offered a 3yr extended warrenty for 50 more but I passed.
I have only ever recorder on a PC DVD recorder so it was a little confusing for me at first to use this unit. The manual must be read to operate and it is a little hard to follow. After using the unit for about 1 week now it has become very easy to use despite the poorly written manual. The unit does have one touch recording and VCR+ making recording much easier. This is a Progressive scan unit with Component, S-video and RF outputs. It has 1hr, 2hr, 2.5hr, 4hr, 6hr and 8hr recording speeds. The 1hr and 2hr recording settings give an excellent picture and as expected the quality drops with the longer speeds, but even the 8hr setting is as good as VHS tape. Seems to be a very good unit overall for the money spent and it has many more features and options that I have have not written about. |
