Nice player. Plays NTSC and PAL (region free) fine. Can't seem to find region hack. Tried the Mintek ones as the consensus seems to be that this is a Mintek device under the covers. None worked. Magnavox/Philips tech support was useless at helping me find the code - although they did point to a menu in the manual, which for some reason is missing on my actual setup menus. Will probably return to BestBuy if I can't find the unlock code.

Ok bottom line, this player DOES play Divx/Xvid....what people have failed to mention is that the player does not like .avi extensions.....change your .avi extension to to .mpg and I guarantee it will work.

It really does not have fast forward/fast reverse buttons on the unit itself, you must use the remote which is uber gay but considering that I was limited to buying a unit from BestBuy, this one had the best features for the money I was willing to spend.

If you don't care about the Divx/Xvid thing, I would much rather go for Toshiba SD-P1600....the screen is one inch smaller, but it is much better from a color/contrast standpoint, not saying the MDP is horrible, but the Toshiba is better. Plus the toshiba has forward/reverse buttons on the unit and has Audio/Video input capability. I owned the Toshiba for a week before returning it for the MDP820....I wanted the Divx/Xvid capability....even though the P1600 is slightly better...

WOW!!! VERY VERY very pleasantly surprised!!! Went on vacation last week with wife and 2 little kids. Our room does not have DVD player so we venture to Best Buy to get a portable player that has jacks to TV. After looking at a few I really couldnt decide. On a flip on the coin we decided on this unit. It played our Hollywood DVDs fine. My intention was to return it when we got back home. But I started to do experiment with various home-made disks. AND I WAS SHOCKED!!! This unit has capabilities that Magnavox has not marketed. These capabilities are not even on the outside box it came in. It is advertised as:

8", 16:9 widescreen, DVD, DVD+R/+RW, CD-R/-RW, JPEG, VCD player.

Well it can also play:

DVD-R/-RW, XVCD, SVCD, XSVCD, DivX 5 (on DVD-R), XviD 1.0 (on DVD-R), DVD-ISO, DVD-UDF. Thats right folks, it plays your burned data files.

One thing though. The XviD files, encoded at full resolution (720x480 DVD rips), did not play full screen. Looks fine and all, but it put in black bars on both sides.

One draw-back is that it is not progressive scan, but, nonetheless, the picture is good. It makes a whirring sound after you put your disk in, but it is not a bother when watching your movie. Control buttons are clearly marked. Looks like it could use a color/contrast control. Does have a brightness control.

The lone remaining question is durability. Will laser die after warranty ends? We shall see. Package does not include carrying/car case.

In summary, this unit is very pricey @ $350 bones. But if you need versatility and compact, easy to travel player, then this is a good bet. The fact that it plays all these varied formats just totally ROCKS!!!

This has played everything I have thrown at it so far, even DivX and XviD. It is also supposed to play DVD-R/RW and SVCD, but I have not tested them yet. I have also not had it very long yet, so I don't have too much info on the battery life. It does make a bit of noise when starting up a disk, but then don't most portables? The only places I have found that sell this unit for sale is Amazon and Best Buy.
