This is one of the best dvd players I have used so far.
My other JVC which was about 170USD is sh!t compared to this. Plays everything you throw at it. Wish it could play DivX/Xvid files tho..

Great Player that plays all my hr long burned DVDs that my 2 yr old APEX had problems with. Love the fact I can put MP3s and MPG files on both CDs and DVDs (it didn't claim to do DVD jpegs and MP3 but does) and it will play them. There is a 32x speed up feature,a slow down feature and a repeat section A to B that is great for watching dance instuction videos. A 4X zoom to 1/4 Zoom.

The power button is a litle funny since it lights when its off and is off when its on but thats minor. There seems to be no way to open the tray from the remove but since its a single disk player you need to get up to put a new one in anyway so thats not a big deal.

The file list (MP3s and MPGs ) has room for 14 characters and does show files in subdirectories. Tried a SVCD and that worked also. Media I've been using is cheap TEON DVD-R and +R and +RW from Staples as well as Maxell DVD -R. CD media is HI-Val CD-RW and Memorex CD-R. I did have one problem with it when it seemed to get stuck playing some DVDs but that cleared up the next day for some reason and hasn't returned in many hrs of playing. I'm happy with it for $50 - at least till DVD recorders with this amount of function come down in price.

Had to return the unit because it made lots of mistakes recognizing discs, going through menus, and playing video without skipping on the DVD+R and DVD+RW discs.

Instead I'm using the ZENITH DVB412 which cost $10 more. I tried all those discs that the Magnavox balked at, no problem whatsover!

Save yourself trouble, GET THE ZENITH!

I bought this player at Circuit City, which calls it the "Magnavox Progressive-Scan DVD Player" and in the fine print uses the model number "MDV45817" for it. It is a terrific deal, considering the impressive list of features, sturdy feel, good looks, and smooth operation! It is much better than any other DVD player I've ever owned or used. It also has received very high customer satisfaction ratings and overwhelmingly positive reviews on the Circuit City website.

I have tested it only with a Sony KV-27V10 Trinitron TV, connected via the S-Video and analog audio connectors. The quality of the picture and sound was as good or better than any I've seen and heard on that TV set. It should be even better with a set that has digital inputs and can take advantage of progressive scan.

With the instructions from the VideoHelp site, I was able to set the region code to 'all regions' in just a few seconds. Thanks a million folks!

After that I was able to play "Nirgendwo in Afrika," a great German movie, from a commercial Region 2 PAL DVD-9 (which my wife had bought last year, ignorant of region codes) as well as NTSC Region 1 movies without any hassles, i.e. the player now automatically recognizes the different DVDs and configures itself for whatever I insert. No need any longer, to hack the region code on the computer every time before playing a DVD from a different region! (Unless I really want to watch it on the laptop.) My wife's already eager to buy more original-release, hard-to-find, and experimental art DVDs on her next trip to Europe.

The player has excellent pause, fast forward/backward, single-frame forward, and zoom features. I was able to stop, turn close-captioning on or off and adjust other settings, then resume exactly where I had interrupted playback.

The remote control is laid out very well. Much better than those from my previous Panasonic and Sony players. It has fewer buttons (e.g. none to control the TV or other devices). While I would find volume control buttons and an eject button convenient, I really appreciate the good arrangement and distinctive tactile qualities of the buttons it does have. The power and mute buttons, at the top left and right, respectively, are easy to remember and find in a dark room. The primary navigation and menu buttons also are easy to find with finger tips alone. An eject button might save a couple of seconds while walking over to the player. But, this player loads discs fast, which makes more than up for the "lost" time. My autoplay DVDs start playing in just a few seconds!

The slim, elegant box has four sturdy metallic buttons: Power, Eject, Stop, Play/Pause. These, too, are easy to find and there is minimal risk to press the wrong button if you have the player on a bottom shelf and don't want to kneel down to get a good look at the controls. Hard-core techno geeks and programmers might see the relatively small number of buttons on the remote and the main unit as a negative, but I think 95% or more of all users will find what they really want and be glad they're not bothered by more. Plus, there is a significantly smaller risk of buttons getting stuck or broken, which, over the years, I have found to be one of the most common problems causing repair bills or necessitating the early replacement of otherwise good equipment.

The only odd feature that takes some time to get used to, is that the power button on the case glows red when it is turned off. It is dark when turned on. That's opposite to how most other electronic devices and applicances in a home work. I guess they thought that the light indicates when there is power to the unit, and that is not needed while the backlit LCD indicates that the box is turned on.

Nice player. Very slim, but full width. Basic but functional remote. Good picture quality for a cheap player.

I picked it up at Circuit City for $43 (After Rebate) to replace a CyberHome 402 that would not play my burned DVD+R media. I was specifically looking for a component output player, so this fit the bill. As a bonus image quality in dark scenes is far superior to the CyberHome.

So far it has played everything I've put into it. Including XSVCD and SVCDs as well as the TDK and Memorex DVD +R and +RW media I have tried. It even plays some old Memorex DVD+RW media that has not played in my Apex 1110.

I've noticed some issues with the colors shifting slighty during play, but it is inconsistent, and appears to be related to the cables and/or connectors as it does not do it if I hook up via svideo.
