| My first recorded DVD+R DL played flawlessly. It's a Verbatim, 2.4X, recorded using MYDVD 6 on a Pacific Digital, Mach-16 DVD+/-RW Recorder. |

| Had this DVD player from a little over a year now. Bought at Bestbuy. Went through many DVD players just to find the one that would play both formats and still don't cost an arm & leg. It's nice, it has played everything i threw at it. Even all those type of various disc, CMC, Ricoh, Ritek, TY, MXL, and others. |

| Comments: |
Bought this unit at BestBuy after I determined that the Motorola MDV456/17 would not play miniDVDs (cDVD).
This unit seems to play everthing that I throw at it (similar to my APEX AD-1130W).
Three second STOP to eject does not seem to work.
The Display key on my remote (NA463) does not seem to work although it is the remote from the MDV456. NOTE: BB
reboxed the MDV455 in the MDV456 box when I told them I wanted the display unit. That's why I ended up with a 456 remote and documentation.
A display key on my Philips/Magnavox PMDVR8 function remote programmed with code 442 will work the OSD display function, but I still cannot get the unit to eject from the remote. |

It plays wonderfully, however I'm a little disappointed with the picture quality. Seems like it's faded out a bit and it has a problem rendering fine shadows. I have to put my TV at it's highest colour settings for it to look as best as I can get it.
Also, like someone else, I too have had a problem playing DVD's I've recorded myself. Towards the end of a movie the player will start skipping. I've played the disks in another player and they played perfectly.
I'm going to call Magnavox if I can't fix the problem. If anyone has any solutions or information it would be appreciated. |

| I was looking for the player that could play large collection of my region-free PAL movies BOTH on NTSC and PAL TV sets. This one works like a charm - not only it can play both PAL/NTSC and convert PAL->NTSC NTSC->PAL, it is capable of playing NSTC in 480p mode and PAL in 576p mode on my X1 projector. Tried several brands of DVD-R and DVD+R - all worked flawlessly. |

| Well, I bought this player after reading the reviews here. It plays my dvd-r and dvd+r disc's with no problem. The only thing that did'nt work, was playing a pal movie. I was hoping it would convert pal to ntsc. I read here that some said it would, but it does not on mine. Also, I agree with the rest, the remote leaves alot to be desired. The eject trick that other's have mentioned does not work on mine, nor does it say anything about it in the manual either. If not for the remote, I would probably give this unit a 10 rating. |

| Bought it today from Best Buy for $40. A real steal. I can now play all of my DVD+R and DVD+RW disks that formerly only played in my computer. Does not have optical digital audio port (coax only). Also missing DTS decoder. However, plays DTS fine through my DTS-enabled receiver. No noticeable picture flaws after several hours of viewing a variety of media. |

| Plays every brand of blank cdr I have put in it. All s/vcds. I was not able to get subs working on it, so I just encode SVCD's with permanent subs. My only complaint is it does not go into screen saver mode when playing music cd's, but it's not much of a problem if you play the audio through a reciever, and turn the tv off |

This is a brilliant player. I played both pal and ntsc dvd+r (hp) burnt at max speed (2.4) and they work perfect. Yes the remote was designed for hobbits, very impractical layout. I burnt some non-vcd compliant mpgs directly on cd-r and they work perfectly on the player. The only drawback is the remote, other than that great player at a great price.. available at best buy.
Desperately seeking region hack... anyone? |

DVD+R's seem to skip/glitch on this DVD player but they work on others, I use FUJIFILM DVD+R's burnt at 2.4X and 4x. I dont understand why because the glitch usually comes towards the end of the movie, and if I rewind a little it will indeed skip very close to where it skipped before but not exactly...BUT if I just put in the DVD at some other point and just skip right towards the end where it once skipped it doesn
't skip so its definetly not a scratch or something, Im starting to think it may be related to Heat? Reason I say this is because it only happens after playing the DVD for a while, and I figure since these are DVD+R's and not professionally made DVD's they aren't exactly 100% laser friendly. Anyone else experience something like this? |

No Region Hack yet.
Plays Ritek and Princo DVD-Rs. Plays VCDs. Plays VCDs burned on CD-Rs. Does NTSC/PAL auto conversion.
Great player so far. I'd rate it a 10/10 if there was a region hack ( I have some region 2 DVDs) and if the remote was better. I can't get the thing to eject with the 3-second stop button trick, and the title/resume button function is a little flaky.

Bought at Best Buy, 59.99. I got a DVD+RW burner and my old DVD player couldn't read DVD+R. Thought it better to go ahead and get another player rather than burner (had read the Panasonic I was using before dies after about a year anyway).
So far so good. Has read every DVD I've put in there. Verbatim, Maxell, KHypermedia, Memorex.
I like the size and feel of the remote in my hand, but yeah, the buttons are a little hard to navigate in the dark. The only clue you really get is a small circle OK button somewhere in the middle. An eject button would be nice too, but not that big a worry. The only other major complaint I have is that I can't seem to figure out how to get the time diplay on the unit to switch from elapsed to remaining. I can switch temporarily in the settings menu, but can't get it to display on the LCD. Just something I like to play with while watching a movie.
But hey, for $60 I shouldn't complain, right? |

see my other report for my review. I thought I'd add that although it doesn't have an "open/close" button, pressing the "play" button essentially operates as a "close" button when the tray is open, and for me, this is as good as an open/close button.
still looking for region hack..... |

bought this last weekend at best buy for $60 and so far i'm impressed. I also have a cyber home ch300, but although it could "convert" pal to ntsc, it cannot maintain the aspect ration, and widescreen movies are full screen and the resolution goes to hell. i bought the magnavox hoping that it would convert the pal to ntsc and keep the aspect ration.
Well, it does and it's played every dvd (-r & +r) i've tried, which is basically compusa/princo dvd-r and philips dvd+r. A little annoying that the remote doesn't have open/close button but not the biggest deal. Also I tried a cd w/ mp3's in folders and i couldn't get inside the folders to play anything, so maybe it doesn't support mp3's in folders (that would seem dumb, but i hardly got it to play music anyhow).
I'd really like to find a region-hack if one exists now that i ran across my first burnt movie that the original ripper apparently left as region 2. If one exists, i'd give this player a 9 or 10, especially considering the price. |

This unit has played burned Fuji and Optimum DVD+R and Hewlett Packard DVD+RW with no problems so far. It has even played the DVD+Rs that my previous CyberHome 300 (which after 5 months degraded into of hitting a wall such that it can't advance beyond a certain point in a movie DVD; nor could it be forwarded via Chapter or Time searches) couldn't play cleanly. I didn't have the CyberHome's problem of freezing or skipping frames or parts of the image breaking into pixelated spots. And it didn't matter the length of the movie either, as it seemed pose a problem for the CyberHome. So far, the MDV455 has played movie DVDs with scratches (even visibly deep ones). I will test for more badly damaged rental movie DVDs when I get them.
As for the features, this unit is a bit disappointing (but to what dissatisfaction degree may not be grave). There is no open/close button on remote, which if you're used to one on a remote before, it can be inconvenient. The buttons on the remote could be laid out better and I don't like the arrow keys, normally to move through menus, doubling up as the slow motion/fast AND reverse/forward buttons. Plus, if you have the zoom in place, those arrow keys effect frame movement left/right/up/down such that you lose the slow/fast motion abilities. All they need are 2 more buttons for those separate functions.
It has the repeat options for tracks/chapters but no bookmarking of specific movie points that you can replay later.
One further quibble about the orientation of its screen display is that you have to scroll through lines/data that aren't all on the screen. And the screen display takes up the entire bottom half of one's TV screen. To compensate, the display shrinks the DVD play to the upper half of the TV screen. When I'm used to be able to put a fixed time display as I'm watching the movie, there isn't that ability with the MDV455. All movie data display is removed when the Display is disabled. And you wouldn't want to leave the screen display on the TV screen because the movie will play shrunk in size.
As a preference, I would have liked the player to be compact. Though it is relatively slim in design, I don't understand why the player needs to be so wide. It's wider than my VCR.
All in all, I penalize the player for those deficiencies (remote buttons and screen display) with the bulk of the rating based on its proven ability to play all types of DVDs (I had only one problem with a HP DVD+RW that would not load; player couldn't read it for some reason). The MDV453 apparently has all the features I miss on the MDV455 so I might end up upgrading to that after my experimentation with the MDV455. Don't know anything about reliability of either though.
FYI, the 90-day warranty involve a free exchange with defective units (though consumer assumes shipping cost to manufacturer and they pay shipping to consumer). After 90 days and up to a year, there's a exchange fee for a replacement player. I would recommend player to anyone whose main concern is DVD playability. Will report if I happen on labored effort of play of severely scratched DVDs; otherwise assume player plays them better than most. |

Tried an Apex and Daewoo before this. Everything I have burned works perfectly: CDR, DVD+R, VCD, SVCD, MP3, JPEG. The other players would either not read the DVD+R, or would play some of the movie then start breaking-up both video and audio until the player would just freeze.
I have used both TDK DVD+R and Memorex DVD+R, both rated at 4x, burned on a Plextor PX-708A. I will try a cheap brand, kHypermedia 2.4x DVD+R and Imation DVD+RW soon and report again if any issues.
This has digital coax output, no optical. Also has zoom, slow motion, and slim (short height) design. |
