Authored home movie with text, transistions, images, video, and audio using Arcsoft Showbiz. Burned to CD-RW media in VCD format. Worked fine. Used Video-OH DVD to capture VHS video.

DVD-R rarely plays without the video freezing or skipping. It often completely locks up and requires a power cycle to recover.

I found that an Apple DVD-R 2x disc burned with a Pioneer DVR-A06 via Toast 6.0.3 worked very well in this unit. A CompUSA DVD+R worked okay as well, but eventually got to a point in the disc where possibly the media was not very good and it started freezing frames and skipping audio. The unit eventually shut itself off.

Absolute piece of garbage. DO NOT BUY THIS. I bought this when it was on sale for $120. Then after about a month (when I got more DVD's) I discovered how terrible this thing was. It skips, freezes, locks up, you have to unplug it to unlock it. And since it was over 30 days now I could not return it to the store, so I contacted phillips about these problems. They said it was a firmware problem. So I asked about there DVD exchange program (which was talked about in the documentation on web site). They said they could only exchange it for a DVD player of the SAME model! So very frustrated about this (because I was willing to pay them to give me another model) I shipped my player to them for $25 dollers (they were so nice as to not re-emberse me for that but would pay the return shipping). So after the $25 dollar replacement fee I recieve another DVD611, but this one is slightly grayish (my other one was black). Thinking that they would atleast have fixed the firmware in this new replacement (which by the way they LOST mine when i shipped it to them UPS gave me a tracking number which I used to track it all the way to their factory they recieved it on the 22nd of the month, one 10 days later (after they recieved it not after i sent it) i called to find out the status of my player. The technision was in a quandery, what player? THE ONE I SENT YOU AND YOU RECIEVED 10 DAY AGO!! They didn't know ANYTHING about it, and they "had no way of contacting the service dept." so all they could do is tell their superiors about my missing DVD player. So then i recieved it about a week later. Any way back to the story...) I recieved the new more grayish DVD player and popped in Perl Harbor (one of the many DVD's that skipped). After about 5 Min. litteraly it loaded the DVD (however this time did eventually go down after loading about 10 different DVD's) And I was now the one in a quandery because it seemed to play fine, did this mean they actually gave me one with working firmware!?!?!? NO!! Because soon after that test run it began it's old anticts again skipping and a wonderfull video time warp error in the movie Time Machine, which I thought was kind funny, because you know Time warp, Time Machine.... oh well, poor me stuck with this terrible DVD player, I think I will go buy a Apex AD-1100W I hear good things about them and their cheep. AGAIN DO NOT BUY THIS I HAD 2, BOTH HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS!!!

Comments:
Some issues with poor playback of high bit rate DVDs (such as Castaway) especially when running hot; DO NOT GET this DVD player if it's in a confined space, it does NOT do well with overheating.

Some issues with the Eject button; I sometimes have to manually unplug the DVD player to reset it when it gets into an infinite loading loop. Best bet in those cases is to unplug, wait 10 seconds, replug in, and hit eject immediately (NOT POWER, then eject, JUST Eject).

One hundred percent will >NOT< play SVCD, though I'm told that it plays VCDs fine. Does a GREAT job playing standard CDs and Audio DVDs.

Very nice picture quality.

I picked it up at Best Buy for $59 last fall; you can find it cheaper or about the same now.

I have successfully recoreded a VCD to a Cd-R on a Fuji Film 700mb 80 min. Cd-R. I have also had success using generic Cd's from CompUSA with no tops on them (looks double sided). Just thought i'd let y'all know!

When I got this for christmast, I expected it to play VCD's from a CD-R, How wrong was I. Anything on a CD-r will NOT work.It will play VCDs bought from a store.... but not on CD-R media.. However... If you use a CD-RW insted of a CD-R.. It works.. And the best thing is.. When you want to copy another movie..and your sick of one on your CD-RWs.. Just reuse the same CD-RWs... Any other info please email me at Jay_toast@hotmail.com Thanks.. Jay

When I bought this I expected it to play VCD's from CD-r's,but it didnt.Until I tested a CD-RW and that's when the fun began.I havnt tested some XVCD's but it did play my own MCVCD (a modified version of Compressed VCD that wasnt accepted) ,a standard VCD,and also plays SVCD all on a CD-RW.Anything on a CD-r will not work.Overall its a good decent player, but having to use CD-Rw's is costing just a little bit more.
