Reloading firmware 03.02 only fixed it for a few minutes. Loader is bad.
Got out the Dremel and cut an exit slot at the rear of the top cover. Ran a Molex extension for power and a full sized (18 inch) IDE cable out the slot to an old LiteON SOHW-1633S burner mounted with Velcro to the top cover. If you use a current spec IDE cable, you'll have to bore out the blocked pin slot on the cable connector with a small drill (e.g. to use an 80 wire 40 pin IDE cable). Or, if you have one of the older ATA spec cables, all pin slots will be open.
Works great. Doesn't look so good right now. I'll find one of those external enclosures that I can modify to accept the IDE connector and mount the enclosure on the top cover of the LVD-2002. That will look pretty good and I think I'll be able to hide the wires inside the enclosure.
Gotta keep this old LVD-2002 going. It's still one of the few DivX/XviD players that displays long file names.
It should last a long time. Motherboard and power supply seem fine. LiteON DVD-ROM drives are about $18 U.S. online. As long as I can still buy cheap IDE drives, I'll just keep replacing the drive until either the motherboard or the PS gives out. |

Stopped reading discs. Re-loaded 03.02 firmware. Works great again.
The 03.02 firmware now available is quite different from the 03.02 firmware that was available a couple of years ago. On screen (TV screen) status bar now indicates ROM flashing and tells you when complete. In the early days, only the LED display of the player would give any indication that the player was updating.
The download of firmware 03.02 that is now available comes in Nero's image format: *.nrg. I'd say you'd need Nero to properly burn the image.
A successful CD burn requires that you leave Nero in its default settings when you burn: Mode 2, Track At Once, Not Finalized.
Today as in the early days of firmware 03.02, fight the urge to finalize the disc, fight the urge to change it to mode 1, and fight the urge to burn in Mode 1 and you'll be successful.
Amazing. It works again. It's been churning out video for about 3 years now.

Someone recommended the Philips 642 instead of this unit. My LVD-2002 outlasted both 642s that I bought and a returned repair job.
The Lite-on is still going after 2 years. DivX has no fast forward or rewind capability, but otherwise I can't complain. |

| LVD-2002 has been working fine with me except Divx's fast fowarding. However, after I patch with latest 3.02 from Liteon, the newer fast forward seems work better. Just want to touch on the firmware upgrade. I didn't need to use the two cd methods. I only need to put in the firmware update cd to upgrade. Btw, burning .nrg as data cd not work for me. I used Nero's image option to burn the .nrg. It works great. It only took a few minutes to finish the patching job. Press power button and I was all set. The srt subtitle works great. |

JUNK ! After 9 months the video died, and with a one year warranty that is totally useless, since the company where I purchased it no longer carries this brand.
Contacting liteon is useless, they tell you to contact the company where you purchased it, and after you tell them the company no longer carries their brand, all they want to do is to jerk your chain. I've learned a valuable lesson, only buy from a reputable company that honors their warranty. |

Very happy with it.
Sure, there are a few drawbacks, but not enough to dismiss the player.
Plays practically everything.
Image quality is very, very good. Not the best I've seen, but very, very good, especially with all the bells and whistles this player has, and for this price.
MPEG4 support is good, and is such a good thing to have I will never buy another player without it. Still, there's no post-processing of the image, so macroblocks not visible on the PC are visible on TV, but that's a minor gripe. (side note, they're more visible through the 480p, as the signal is sharper and the HDTV is much sharper, the regular tv doesn't show these enough to complain about it.)
Component 480p output is great.
Widescreen support is good, but it's rather annoying having to completely stop the player, and in the case of ISO discs, eject the disc, in order to get to the Setup menu to switch between 4:3 and 16:9 output (I have both, and the player is connected to both, component to the HDTV and SVideo to the standard).
Another mild annoyance is the incorrect AR of mpeg4 playback. It seems to assume that all mpeg4's have the same pixel AR as DVDs, which is wrong, and results in a too tall and narrow display.
Other than that, I'm very happy with it, and the latest firmware (final one from LiteON for this model) provides support for OGG Vorbis, although I haven't tested it yet.
As a general, all in one DVD player, I give it a 9.
As a DVD only player, I'd give it an 8. Black areas are not as detailed as they should be, so I can't give it a higher score.
Also, the remote has not backlighting, so it's hard to see what is what without turning on the lights.
But these complaints are in no way a big deal considering the 1 bill pricetag... plus the convenience of throwing a bunch of file on a dvd and being able to play them on TV. |

| I cannot recommend this player at all. Besides extremely poor customer support and duping all of us who bought one into the "firmware upgradeable" scam (LiteOn is not supporting this unit and there are still loads of bugs), the unit is "very very" picky about media. I have only had one brand of DVD+RW work reliably enough to watch more than one movie in a row without some glitch or crash. The problems are numerous and have all been mentioned in this forum. If you're considering buying this unit, don't. Buy yourself a Philips DVP-642 instead. It's a shame that a company that has done so well with the PC Recorder market, has botched this potentially promising line of players - and badly. |

This player had a good potential but the customer support of LiteON is really bad.
The last firmware has a lot of buggs and they don't want to developp a new.
Keep out of this Manufactor and boycott it for all the products. |

Mac/Toast 6.05 instructions for burning the updaters to CD:
For the small 4 k 'LVD2002.TSP' file:
DataTab = ISO 9660
SettingsTab : Format = CD-ROM XA
: Naming = Joliet
: Uncheck Both Boxes
For the 5.4 MB 'V0.T3.02.nrg' all you need do is drop the file on the Toast icon/application and let Toast automatically choose the settings.
I updated this morning without any problem, unplugging the unit between steps while I burned the second CD. Even though the files are very small, they must be burned to separate CD (for those who might want to try session burns.) |

| So many people seem to be having trouble upgrading their firmware that I thought Ishould post that it went well for me once I had the proper files downloaded. I followed the instructions and there were even some on-screen and front panel display prompte to tell me what was happrning. Even a progress bar. Frankly, I was surprised it went so well. The only thing not realiy clear from the instructions is how to reboot the player. I unplugged mine from the wall. Worked for me. Good luck. |

bmwracer: My mistake, I stand corrected.
So I *should* have said "...companies developing superior technology for lower prices to get stuck on one Chinese/Taiwanese flash-in-the-pan like liteon. Screw them the same way they screwed us."
In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan. It reverted to Chinese control after World War II. In a country with a functional literacy rate of 86%, we should have expected no better.

I bought my player in the US and also was able to upgrade it from 2.29 to 3.02 using the 2-disc method. The first disc did not eject automatically (as supposed to) but instead kept cycling through "update"-"reading" until I unplugged it. When I inserted the second disc (the actual update), the LED kept showing "update" for hours, so I again unplugged it for a few seconds and tried putting disc in again. This time it worked: it went through the sequence "iso disc"-"update"-"reading" in about 4 minutes.
When you burn the update discs in Nero, make sure you do NOT use the multisession mode because they won't be recognized as updates. |

I upgraded mine from 2.29 to 3.02 using the 2 disc method. When it said to reboot I unplugged it for 10 seconds. I havent had any problems with it, but I also havent been using it very much. I tried a couple of divx files and some mp3 dvds just to verify that it was ok.
Whenever I play around with different codecs I always try it on DVD/CD-RWs. I havent found one end all codec that consistently works but Xvid seems to have a bit of an edge in my opinion.

Agreed, I will never purchase another product from this company.
Their reputation for purely unacceptable-quality support and for continuing their trend of ending a popular product to push people to buy a new model has set new lows for business.
I admit it, I made a mistake. I should have gone with the KISS, or any one of the Divx decks that are manufactured by *reputable* companies who stand behind their products.
There are too many companies developing superior technology for lower prices to get stuck on one japanese flash-in-the-pan like liteon. Screw them the same way they screwed us.

Liteon claims there will be no more updates to this player, that it is end-of-lifed... this before they seem to even be shipping its replacement. Seems they are more interested in artifically obsoleting their product line... bottom line, they claim to be upgradeable, and they are, but its not much use if LiteOn won't be issuing updates.
With DVD-mp3 you can put 1000? mp3s on one DVD, but the LVD-2002 cannot do random/shuffle, so ya have to listen to them in the same order every time (dumb dumb dumb.. my CD player in 1987 had random, no excuse to omit this feature)
On the video side it plays just about everything you can throw at it.
If there were going to continue to support this player, I'd give it an 8. But buyers need to be warned about LiteOn. |

The update has now been appended with instructions regarding the "Current Firmware is Newer than Update" problem.
http://www.liteonit.com.tw/DC/english/download/2002.htm
Basically there are two seperate image files to update with now, a TSP image (http://www.liteonit.com.tw/DC/english/download/tsp_for_lvd2002.zip) and the actual 0302 update image. Both burn with Nero.
I did this update and now have a working, updated 2002.
It appears to work - Divx 5 appears to be better than before, but I am typing this several minutes after applying it and as I run around preparing for work this morning, so this report is far from complete.
I just wanted to mention that their latest instructions do work. No doubt one of the more video-savvy users will provide a report on the quality of the new code.

No, the update does not work it seems. Every report I've read here and elsewhere, plus reports from people who've mailed me in response to my post here about the availability of the update, states the upgrade has not worked.
A friend has the LVD-2001 and I upgraded his machine to 302 just fine, so at least that upgrade works. It's just us LVD-2002 owners who are out of luck.
However, as some may have noticed, the 0302 update has not yet appeared on the Liteon Americas site, so perhaps the update on the Taiwan site is not meant for North American (or any non-Asian) models, I really don't know. I doubt that's the case but hey, I'm grasping at straws for a reason.
For what it's worth I've emailed Liteon about it but of course I have yet to get a reply (they're famous for ignoring customer emails), but if I hear anything from them I'll definitely post the response here. |
