this is to update my gushing review of 1/05.

update...the unit now refuses to recognize ANY blank i put in, thus rendering it useless for a recorder. one would think that a product would give good service for more than 2 yrs (w/ very little use, i've burned mabe 100 discs now). this seems to be common across all consumer products here lately, they seem to be throw-aways, unlike years past.

stay away from htis unit!

I don't know where my original post went, I know I posted here when I got this thing. I was afterall excited. Was a great deal at Radio Shack for $149 + sales tax add to that a rebate for $50. I was extremely excited.

At first all seemed great, then over time it began to act up and miss behave. First it developed inability to play back DVD+R/+RW it created! Now the transport is malfunctioning badly and has become UNUSABLE.

BEST BET SPEND THE EXTRA BUCKS AND GET A BIG NAME BRAND SONY/PIONEER/RCA....

Originally bought unit at Radio Shack as a upgrade from vcr. It does record well enough on CD up to 1hr and 14 min. per CD. There are compatability problems with SVCD and some other units- so beware. Major problem though is the incompatability with some name brand DVD set top players. The recording format is NOT DVD-VIDEO but a slight varient called DVD-VR. This will not play on some newer machines, but will play on some older machines. This also makes it nearly impossible to make copies of your recordings using a computer DVD burner such as Roxio 6, or NeoDVD 4.Lite-on says in the book that came with it that the DVD-VR format will play in "all most all" players, and is close enough to standard DVD-Video format to work. It would have been nice if they would put a warning on the box that says it uses another new format that may not be compatable with the system you already have. It does record on all the media formats it says it will and plays back anything that it has recorded on itself. So if you purchase THIS unit be sure to burn a test disk on it in DVD-VR to take with you to the store to test for playability on any other player you wish to purchase in the future.

very pleased with the uni!
Firmware updates seemed to have made it even better. Best quality recording is if one uses HP setting not SP-- you can get a great recording if you record from a HD dish receiver ( but it must be a HD program broadcast too).

Another good trick is to record on the liteon but play it back on a unit that up converts-- like the samsung and LG dvd players--- this makes it alomost HD quality when watched on a 56 inch HD Samsung DLP set.

All in all a very nice unit-- my next step will be to move up to a HDDVR unit hopefully one with a DVD integrated in it-- when prices come down.

Was looking for a DVD Recorder to replace VCR that died.

Wanted to transfer movies and specials (keepers) from my DirecTivo (SD-40 upgraded to 107hrs). I can't imagine anyone ever buying any DVD Player/Recorder that isn't multi format (+/-) compatible. S-vid in/out were absolute MUST HAVES! This eliminated much of the cheaper competition. Have created SVCD's, 1/2/3 hr DVD's and 6 hr DVD's (resolution and bitrate egual to VCD.) The latter is comparible to VHS (albeit worn with age.) Still at $162 and change out the door with a $50 (RadioShack) MIR.

The remote is lack luster, essential functions only. The "Guider" user interface is easy enough I'll bet my cats will soon be using it to record their fav Friskees comercials, lol.

The only negative so far is Title Editing before finalizing. How clunky, they must have done research and done the WORST. Soon we will be seeing in the dictionary under "counter-intuitive" 1.Title Editing on the LiteON LVW-5006.

Suprised me that I found such a great deal at RadioShack. Just proves that the shack should not be so readily dismissed, I'll certainly be checking it online more often now.

This unit appears to work fine for its intended purpose which is to backup older vhs tapes. Had to utilize the macrovision removal hack. Everything was fine after that. Haven't tried its component output yet just composite. Yes it is slightly grainy when viewing vhs thru it on an hdtv but that's to be expected. It certainly is better than the lvw-1105hc that it replaced. Bought at radioshack for 150.00 with a 50.00 mir

First I tried the LiteOn LVW-1105HC, for $76 from Best Buy. It looked horrible. It did not record very clearly, etc. Waste of money; it's going back to the store.
To replace it, I picked up this LVW-5006 to try. Better picture, but not stunning by any measure; watchable on a standard def. TV. The tuner is not as clear as the Gateway recorder from a couple of years ago. I'm using component and S-Video instead.
If you have an HD-TV, then this box is not for you! On the 42 inch Phillips plasma TV I tried it on, it looked rather horrible. The best digital signal or commercial DVD looked like a VHS tape. On the standard definition CRT TV set, it's watchable.
DO NOT buy this unit as your primary DVD player for watching store-bought movies! The brand new store bought DVD which looked stunningly sharp on a Sony DVD player and plasma TV looked like a VHS tape on this LiteOn LVW-5006 and the same plasma TV. Also looked far inferior on a standard def. TV to the image from Apex, Sony, or Phillips DVD players.
When playing commercial DVDs, there is also some bizarre issue with the aspect ratio. When playing a widescreen store-bought DVD, the player starts out playing the DVD in widescreen mode just fine, then after a minute or so of video play, the picture zooms in, chopping off the ends of the image! It does this no matter what I set in the "Setup Menu" under "Playback." If I choose 16:9, 4:3 pan, or 4:3 letterbox, the player seems to ignore the choice. It always zooms in after a minute of play, chopping off the ends of the picture! After it has zoomed in like this, if you push "display" to get the info bar at the top of the screen, _just_ the top of the picture is pushed down from the top of the screen. Then it zooms back in after a minute or so of play again. I've never seen a DVD player act this way; not Apex, Sony, GE, Gateway, or Phillips!
Yes, I updated to the newest firmware. It seemed to help tuner clarity ever so slightly. However, there is still a general staticky-ness to the picture a lot of the time, even when playing a commercial DVD!
On the plus side, it has Firewire. It records VCDs and SVCDs directly onto CD-Rs. It will also record CD audio directly to CD-R, which would have been a great feature 10 years ago.
So, if you want the dvd recorder with the most features, you have a standard definition TV, you have VERY clear signals available, and you're ok with VCR-picture quality, then you're the audience for this box.

Comments:
rated it quite high as I haven't had any problems with it (yet!!) and managed to change the firmware without problems.

And so far it does what it says it will do.

It's my first recorder so I've nothing to compare it against except a video recorder.

Here goes, well, it's different, seems to take a little time to start and stop recording, like 1 or 2 seconds. Although it might be recording or stopped during this period, it's not too clear, the on (tv) screen display takes that long to respond after you press record or stop (recording).

I like the fact that it records in all the formats of dvd (except double layer and dvd ram). It also records to cd in audio, svcd and vcd format - on cd-r and cd-rw as Sue says below, which is handy.

There seems to be an issue with fan noise with these machines, it's there but doesn't bother me and I don't find it obtrusive.

As to disk noise, I haven't come across that although I have experienced it on computer drives so I think know what other reviewers are referring to.

In use it seems fine, seems a bit clumsier than a vhs recorder in terms of button pressing, I think that's because it doesn't default to the tv tuner but to it's own screen, then you have to wade through a pile of input options like, scart, front-av, DV and TV.

It's more of a dvd player that records than a video recorder that uses dvds.

It has thumbnail images for each session of recording, taken from the very begining of your recording which are displayed when you go to the title/menu page of the disk, even when playing back on another machine - a thumbnail gallery of your recordings.

It's not that useful for me as it usually catches some sort of tv advertisement, blackness or something completely unrelated to the programme I'm recording. It would be useful if I could change that myself, or even if it took the image from 5 minutes into the recording or something.

But, you can change the name/title of the thumbnail to something meaningful (yes, the thumbnail gallery
has a title, date and time of recording for each thumbnail), although this is a bit of a task as you move the cursor around the on screen keyboard.

It's a bit hard to tell if the machine is on standby or on but not playing anything.

It only has five timer settings.

It has the videoplus function, ie type in the code numbers in the tv listings and it sets the timer, nice and easy.

It has pdc, that's the modified timer start and stop function triggered by the tv station sending out a signal, useful when programmes are running late or early - haven't used it myself as I've had suspicions about the tv channels reliability in setting the signal after a few annoying misses on my video recorder.

It has a DV connection for those who want to record onto it from a digital video camer (haven't used it).

So far I'm very happy with this machine.

If the recording stops because it's ran out of space the recording you've just made still works.

You can't chop off the end of the previous recording by starting the next one over part of it.

It is easy to change from region 2 (UK) to all regions, but you have to get the information on how to do it from the internet as liteon don't give it to you, of course.

Got to run - bye

Ditto with the macrovision copyright protection if you are in to that type of thing.

On the one hand, this is an amazingly versatile machine, recording to DVD+R/W and DVD-R/W discs, but also recording to CD-R/W as either audio CD or VCD/SVCD. That is a unique feature. It is multiregion with a quick remote hack and can be hacked to remove macrovision, allowing you to back up your DVD and VHS collection. However, on the down side, almost all the tuners are mono sound (Why?), you have to regularly download firmware upgrades from the web to keep it up to date, and nearly everyone I know with a Liteon has had to replace it at least once, as so many are faulty. I am now on my 3rd in 5 months!!! I honestly don't think many would last more than a year. Extremely unreliable. If you have the ability to fit a new DVD burner, you would have a brilliant machine, but that's mad!

In about 2.5 weeks, I will receive the 4th unit of this model. The first had to be returned as defective because out of the box it did not receive broadcast TV. It was returned and exchanged for a second, which had the same problem. Then I discovered that this problem was fixed by a new software version (how did this pass QA with sw that could not tune broadcast tv?).

Next problem, I'm doing manual recording to a DVD-R, and it stops responding to the remote and all front panel buttons, won't stop recording! Had to press and hold power button to shut down. I call 888-4-LITEON and am told this is due to a bad DVD-R disk, even though they tell me the brand I'm using is on their recommened list. Hard to believe a bad disk can cause the unit to stop responding to front panel - seems like bad sw design if its true. Too late to return to store so I assume this is the problem.

Next problem, when programming the unit for timer record, intermittently shows a status of "FAIL" after the recording should have been done. With multiple programs, some will be FAIL and others record ok. Different brands of disks too. Again I am told this is a problem with disk, but makes no sense since programs set for a later time record ok on the same disk (and there's plenty of time left). I'm also told they can't really tell why it failed (you'd think it would store a code which could be accessed in a maintenance mode). If disk was bad why doesn't the following program fail also.

Anyway, I try different disks, same problem. Then told to try yet another sw upgrade. After several months, and lots of hold time, given an RMA to send back. I ask if I will get a refurb unit (as permitted by the warranty), told I will get a new unit which has been opened and tested.

2.5 weeks later get a refurb unit with an older serial number, smudges and scratches (according to RMA form, a unit will be rejected for service if it has any cosmetic damage). Call back and am told I was supposed to get a refurb unit, but it should be in mint cosmetic condition. Will have to ship back and get another. They will pay return ship this time so I don't have to pay twice, BUT they will not expedite, so it will be another 2.5 weeks. Maybe after almost 6 months of calls and shipments I will get a unit that will be reliable, but I have my doubts.

If it would work, the unit is easy to use and has some nice features (would be nice though if you could select the thumbnail for the index, and if you could set a time to stop recording when starting manually).
What good is a DVR if its a flip of a coin whether it will record the programs you want?

You could get lucky and get one that works, but I can't recommend this unit to anyone. And given the level of service, doubt if I would try any of their models.

This unit has worked without a flaw. I do like being able to copy from S-video off the Dish-DVR. It gives a great picture. It mostly likes the -R media. I have found that the +R to be a pain in the ass to work in other DVD players. So my media of choise is DVD-R. Stay with the name brands. The el-Cheepo's dont wook all the time. The LVW-5006 does what Liteon says it will do, but when a DVD or a CD is inserted to play back or to record on, it puts out a terrible noise. It is some sort of viberation that I can feel by putting my hand on the unit. The problem exists for DVD-R, DVD-RW and CD-RW. Prerecorded commercial audio CD's and movie DVD's don't seem to have the problem. I am using Disks Liteon recommends. I took it back to Radio Shack and they were no help. The demo unit at the store did the same thing but not quite as bad. It is an unbearable noise in the room. RS thought that the audio in the room should mask it. Big help! In a lot of cases I record with the sound turned down. From this stand point, I would recommend to not buy one. RS was no help. I will contact Tech support and see if they have any solution. Works great except for the loud noise.

I've only had the box two weeks but I'm quite pleased so far. I took it out of the box and had recorded to DVD within about 15 minutes without any complications. The instructions were very straight-forward leaving little to question. Not too sure about media compatability yet, I finalized a cheap 4x DVD-r today and it was recognised second time by my stand alone player(?) Probably the media. Does what it says on the box and that's good enough for me.

VERY SATISFIED WITH ONE EXCEPTION. THE TV TUNER HAS BACKGROUND NOISE FROM LOW TO ANNOYING. THIS HAPPENED WITH BOTH THE LOCAL CABLE HOOKUP OR THE SATELLITE HOOKUP. OTHERWISE I HAD NO PROBLEMS. TECH SUPPORT VIA E-MAIL IS EXCELLENT. SOUND PLAYED EXCELLENT FROM A VCR CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE UNIT, THE PICTURE ALSO WAS GOOD. ON THE AVERAGE I BURN A DISK 4 HOURS. TECH SUPPORT HAD ME SEND THE UNIT BACK WHICH I DID YESTERDAY (2-9-05). THE FIRMWARE IS UP TO 098. UNABLE TO GIVE AN OVERALL RATING BECAUSE OF THE TV TUNER SOUND PROBLEM AND I HAVE NOT USED ALL MEDIA. I HAVE MADE EXCELLENT COPIES FROM THE VCR TO THE RECORDER ON CD-R MEDIA. HOPEFULLY THE UNIT THAT IS RETURNED TO ME HAS THE SOUND PROBLEM CLEARED UP.

have had this machine since friday
i have had problems playing discs burned from my previous liteon 5005 machine! little pixel boxes appear all over screen in yellow.but the recorded picture is underneath somewhere
(i am wondering whether it was wise to buy another liteon as my 5005 now refuses to say anything other than no disc 90% of the time when inserting a new unrecorded disk)
The liteon 5006 looks good but until i suss proper connections way out cant review all
my gut feeling is i`m disappointed and feel problems I
ahead
I have not yet worked out how to connect and record from video!! help please would be nice thanks

ok this is a solid good working unit but it has one realy big problem which some people will not like

i recently paid £14.00 for a pay per view event and set the recorder and went to bed

i got up the next day to see a mesahe on the screen saying protected content stopping recording

this is total b/s in my opinion and you should be able to record events you pay for on tv like you can with video recorders

we need a macro hack or somthing desperatly

Comments:
My previous comments were incorrect - sorry. The 5006B 091 firmware and above fully support recording in RGB. The reason why the signal turned blank was because the unit needs pin 16 to be set to 1-3V to switch from composite to RGB recording. Note that the composite pin is also used when recording in RGB for the RGB sync signal.

Two gripes:

1. 2 out of 3 units I own, when monitors are connected, fail to display colour on the composite o/p

2. When recording from an RGB source the image occasionally is biased purple. Rapid switching of the remote source button often cures this.

Hope this helps some...

Lea
