I've been using my RH7500 for 10 months. I find it a very reliable machine, it has plenty of options and reads/writes a wide range of media. Of course, it has some issues, but what one doesn't?

Warm-up time is short (8 secs with firmware 60126A), after it the recorder is ready to operate. Tuner is not too good, maybe my antenna cable is crap but I found a below-par image quality from analog TV. Conectivity is great, I've tried several digital set-top boxes to AV2 and image is good, same when connecting to RCA inputs. Records from DV input with superb quality.

Recording (to HDD/DVD) is very easy. You can select four levels of quality. However, it doesn't feature a VBR or "disc-fix" quality, so you can't record to DVD more than 2 hours in standard quality (SQ). Anyway, you can edit what you recorded to hard disk (i.e., merge, split, or delete commercials, which is very easy and intuitive) then record it to 2 DVD, but once you edited from HD, you can't fast copy the edited footage to DVD: The only way to do it is a x1 speed, which sucks! It's the worst issue I found.

I tested many DVD+/-R brands (mostly Verbatim) and none failed. TDK DVD+RW went o.k., but I had some trouble with a couple of Rimax DVD+RW, perhaps bad media. Overall, great compatibility: All discs play on other players.

The unit plays everything I tested: Original DVDs, recorded DVDs (+/-R(W)), (S)VCD, DivX/Xvid files (even .mpg renamed to .avi), and MP3. It recognizes and plays DVD-MP3 as well. A nice feature: You can copy .avi or .mp3 files to hard disk, then plays them from it! Very cool if you fill it with lots of mp3 and plays them shuffled. Subtitles are also detected (.srt and .sub), but I couldn't get several languages .srt to work, the unit seems to ignore the second srt file.

Unit can't ff/rew .avi files, which is annoying if you use them. Only a "go to specified time" option is available for this format. Not a problem for me, anyway.

The coolest option is TimeShift, which allows to record from TV while watching in real time. However, you can't timer a timeshift, only a standard recording can be programmed. The unit should be powered-off for starting the timer-rec. These are minor issues.

Firmwares are available at the Polish LG site. I updated it with no trouble, improving warm-up time and some subtitles issues.

At a glance:

Pros:
- High read/write media compatibility
- Plays a wide range of formats
- Easy to work with it
- Great value for the money

Cons:
- No variable bitrate recording option
- No fastdubbing of edited footage (major lack)
- No ff/rew for .avi files
- No chance of timer a timeshift session

Got this a while ago and have done loads of recording from Sky+. The picture in both Standard and HQ modes was great.

Note there seems to be a limit of 255 of number of clips you can record on it - when you reach this number pressing record is ignored by recorder until you delete some.

The problem is it has suddenly stopped working... when the power is turned on it just says "Please wait..." and stays like that forever (with a click and restart every so often).

I had over 250 clips recorded and it appears they are now lost.

Did a google and it appears other people have been having the same problem with it - seems to be some common fault - can't recommenend it - avoid.

I have the LG RH-7900, which is the same as the 7500, but with a larger hard drive.

I've had the recorder for about a month now, and have tested out a lot of the functions. The initial setting up was easy enough. I have the TV cable going to the VCR, through to the HDD recorder and then on to the TV. Signal quality is fine, and in fact is better than ever when viewing via the HDD recorder, rather than straight from the TV, although the sound is lower.

The menu system is quite nice, and easy enough to use, but sometimes pressing the 'return' button doesn't actually return you to the TV station you were watching, and have to go a different route.

Recording onto the HDD is a simple enough process, and the timer function is good. It states in the manual that recording on the HDD and playing from a disc are completely independent processes, and so can be done at the same time. This not true! Recording onto the HDD and playing a DVD at the same time is no problem, but it will not play a DivX or XviD whilst recording. It doesn't matter if it is on a disc or the HDD, the option to access it is simply greyed out.

DivX/XviD playback is otherwise good. As said by others, rewinding and fast-forwarding is not possible. I don't know if this is normal as this my first MPEG-4 player, but you can't even do it in Windows Media Player, so i presume it's the norm. I've played an XviD with a subtitles file (.srt) as a test, and this worked fine.

Recording onto a DVD is fine when you have the right brand of DVD. I ordered a 10 pack of DVD+RWs with the recorder, only to find that the recorded discs would only play properly on the recorder. In the manual there is a short list of compatible media, so best to check that first. I have used 2 year old Verbatim DVD+RWs and new Philips DVD+RWs without any problem. I've also tried recording onto one brand of DVD-Rs, and again it would only play properly in the recorder. The video would skip every 30 seconds or so in another player. Not only that, but it's not possible to use the 'Search' function on a recorded disc. Because of this, for archiving video I burn onto an RW, rip it to the computer, re-author the disc and then burn it onto a DVD+/-R. Long-winded, but it works.

Editing recorded video on the HDD is simple enough. The only problem is that burning an edited video onto a DVD can only occur at 1x. Non-edited video burns faster. There's no real reason why you shouldn't be able to burn edited video faster. All that's needed is a buffer. Another thing is that there is no confirmation dialog when trying to burn onto a disc that doesn't have enough space. There are dialogs for more simple matters, why not this?

The picture-in-picture function is nice, and the picture can be moved around the screen and made bigger or smaller. You can only use this funtion when watching a DVD or recording. It would also be nice if you could swap between which picture the sound comes from.

There's no 5.1 output, which is a pity since I now have a set of speakers lying around, gathering dust. The cheapest of DVD players have 5.1, so why not a €360 recorder?

It plays even mp3, divx, xvid, jpeg etc from DVD (which isn't officialy listed?!)

With new official firmware it works faster and it solved a few other problems too. You can find it on LG Nordic http://nordic.lge.com.

Only negativities are that you cannot rewind divx and it that produces some noise but not quite loud (it's certainly more quite than any PC).

Well i liked the features, but what i laked wath a wiring schedule to set-up the box using a satellite receiver.
After some fideling around the satelitte receiver is connected directly to the LG7500, which is connected to the TV-set.
This works fine, i can use my satelitte and cable connection (who wants to poor quality) to record.
The only thing i lak is the possibility to use teletext when using the LG 7500 as receiver.
The menu structure is a litle bit weird need to get used to that.

More follows

Won`t play copied movies on DVD recordables. I have a Tangent player that has no problem and a Acoustic Solutions player. When the DVDR is inserted,it just scans the disc for 30 seconds [app] and then says unknown format etc... This is a BIG drawback, as I backup my DVDs in case of scratches etc. As for Divx / Xvid, no problems at all.

Still working out how to play 16/9 divx/xvid files in widescreen mode with the subs at the correct place.
Upgraded firmware to 51214A resolved the sub staying on screen problem.
Can play mpeg2 files but have to change the extention to avi or divx.

I've just had it for a week or so. Got a good price deal at my local media store and decided to give it a try. My primary reason for owning a HDD DVD recorder has been to replace the VCR and get rid of all my VHS tapes almost making my cupboard drawers crack. Also, my VCR has recently become very unreliable, which started getting on my nerves.
I am very positively suprised with the recorded image quality in both HQ and SQ (standard quality) mode (haven't checked the others yet). For a home user like myself it is just perfectly enough. The box responds very fast to the remote commands and its menu is quite nice as well. It has a built-in TV tuner so you can store your terrestial or cable tv channels. I use my DVB satellite box to view television channels and it works just fine. Disadvantages? The remote is quite big to any standard remotes and the 80Gb HDD could always be larger ;-). Cheers.

very nice recorder for this price. I think, the recorder has a software bug: if the timer recording is activated and the recorder is in the record mode it is not possible to simultaneous playback from the HD.

Not yet tried many of the functions but I am confused and slightly disappointed by the way it handles 16:9/4:3 switching from external decoder (Freeview box (FVB)). Setting 7500 to 16:9 will play DVD's in the correct format (as you would expect) it will also display 16:9 output from the FVB (as you would expect). It shows 4:3 from FVB stretched to 16:9 - not very useful.

If you select 4:3 format on the 7500 it correctly switches between 16:9 and 4:3 from the FVB- great - but it plays recorded 16:9 information (from DVD and it's own recordings) in 4:3 - squashing the picture. Not very sensible. It's just a tad annoying having to keep switching the format.

Sometimes freezes, you need to reset by holding the power key for 5 secs. A friend also told me that when he records EP on his Philips (about 8 hours on a DVD) he has good picture quality, don't know haven't seen, but recorded EP (6 hours) it pretty sucks hehe.
