Firmware 1.93...have had some luck upconverting over component. Tuner is excellent. DVD player is rather loud. Placed unit in enlosed rack to "silence" the spinning sound of the DVD.

My homemade DVDs were skipping and having problems playing in this player but then I tried lowering the burn rate (using DVDDecrypter) to 6X and they now play fine. I burned quite a few with the burn rate set to max (allowing the burner to reach its max rate according to the media used) and they usually messed up in this player but usually played ok in my cheap toshiba.

I gladly sacrifice a little time for more compatible DVDs!

By the way, I have used mostly Verbatim +Rs and now have used some TDK -Rs. The same is true for both brands/formats...slower burn speed creates better DVDs.

I also have problems playing DVD's made at home. I use 123 Copy DVD. The DVD plays and skips and finally stops. I have played original DVD's fine.I have played Verbatim DVD's made by a friend that work fine. Unsolved. Can anyone help another newbe? I tried Imation, TDK, HP, and other DVD's. Imation seems the best but still doesn't work. Could the laser need alignment?

I have been using the player for the better part of a year and the Tuner works great in Southern California. I can get channels from Los Angeles, Orange County and Northern California. I can't seem to get it to recognize my homemade DVD's at all. I have tried several brands and +/- with no luck. Could someone comment on the software they are using to burn the DVD and is there any special technique to finishing the disk so it will read in this player. Thanks for helping a newbie out!

Nice to have both a progressive DVD and an HD tuner integrated into one, since I only have 2 component inputs on my TV, and an Xbox uses the other one.

Overall I really like the 3510a, it's 480p quality for DVDs is noticably less than the picture quality of the Apex 2600 it replaced. The 480P for the HD tuner is the same mild mosquitos as well. In 1080i it looks superb, but I haven't been able to get the DVD player to work in 1080i yet, not even with dvd-rs (FW 1.92).

It DOES play all dvd-rs I've tried so far, including old low quality ones like DVD-Pro and Optodisc....just tested a dual layer dvd+r Ritek in it today and it hopped all over like a breeze, no problems. It even navigates Disney DVDs quite easily, which is problem I have had with many dvd players.

Overall, not worth the MSRP at all, but the refurbished ones for under $200 are worth it IMO if you have an HDTV with no tuner. It easily tuned all the local HD broadcasts through a crappy UHF rabbit ear antenna...I instead decided to plug my cable in (even though I only have internet through cable, no TV actually) and it tuned in all of the local HD, SD, and a few more channels ;) Sweet!

Great combination player for the money. I would rate the HD tuner portion a 9/10. The DVD Player would get an 7/10. I see occasional jaggies when playing a DVD. The region hack works. I can play all of my Region 2 DVD's just fine. Looks like I can get rid of my Sampo 611 which I have had for several years. Unfortunately the Sampo couldn't play any on commercial DVD's that I made. The LG seems to play everything that I throw at it. Have tried Verbatim DVD+Rs, Imation +Rs and some generic +R that I got from Frey's. The component output displays a nice saturated picture without many adjustments to my Sanyo Z3 projector. The DVI output is another story. I spent several hours getting the projector to look right and finally got it to look quite good.

I have a October 04 build unit with firmware version 1.92. It was an Open box unit that i got from BB. For $320+Tax I am very pleased with this unit. It will hold me over till HD DVD comes out off early adopter pricing.

I thought I would update my review now that I have had time to play with it a little more.

I got my new TV with the DVI input, but I am using that for my HTPC, so I still have not tried this player through DVI.

This player did have one strange quirk that I need to mention. It seemed to have some trouble getting the aspect ratio right after changing discs while set to "Wide Mode". When I put "Gladiator" in (an Anamorphic DVD), the player seemed to be putting out a signal as if to go to a 4:3 TV. It was adding massive black bars at the top and bottom, and stretching the picture left-to-right. The only way to fix this was to go into the player setup menu, switch to "Normal" and then switch back to "Wide". Rather annoying, I thought.

I prefer the players that have a simple setting where you tell it what shape your TV is. This player has four or five settings, similar to Sony 16x9 TVs that can do different wide modes. I would rather let the TV handle any kind of Zoom, Full, or Widezoom settings, and have the DVD player simply output the correct signal for the TV. Personal preference, I guess.

This is probably not the forum for this particular comment, but I must say the 3510a has a fantastic HD Tuner. My new Sony TV has an HD tuner built in, but there were HD stations this player found in search mode that the TV doesn't find. The superbowl in HD was truly a religious experience!

I still have not found any media brand or disc format that this thing won't play.

Now that I have raved about this device, I am selling it. I just don't need the extra HD tuner, and there are a lot of much cheaper players out there that play all the same formats. I am switching to a JVC 600BK for $90.

This is a great DVD player, and an HDTV tuner as well! You could easily pay $400 for an HDTV tuner, so this one playing DVDs is a huge bonus.

For a purely DVD application, this is a fairly expensive progressive-scan player, but if you need both, this is an amazing bargain.

Played everything I put in it, INCLUDING some home-made DVDs that failed to play on my Apex and on my Toshiba.

Imation brand mostly. Khypermedia and Fuji as well. There were no problems with any disc I tried.

I have not watched this player often/close enough yet to give it a fair in-depth review, but I have been extremely happy with the DVD output using the component video out, and coaxial audio out.

It "seemed" to me to be a little sharper picture and perhaps better color than what I was getting out of my Toshiba 6200 (which doesn't play SVCD).

This player had a little trouble navigating thru a home-made DVD (DVDiT on DVD-R). It played the disc fine, but when you tried to change chapters, it didn't seem to me to go to the right chapter. Since I cannot play this disc on any of my other players, I don't know if it was a problem with the player or the disc or the authoring program, or the user (me).

I did not hook up using the DVI plug, because my DVI-capable TV is two weeks away (sched delivery 2/27 for my KDF70XBR950 (just in time for the Superbowl in HDTV!)).
