Comments:
I bought this player for the price and because it reads external subtitles (srt and sub) with divx movies, even though it only handles western codepage and no unicode.

It doesn't truncate the name of the files so much. It's fairly quick to load the CD-R and DVD-R and DVD-/+RW disks I've tried on it. It doesn't salvage poorly encoded divx movies on the big tv screen (very obvious pixilization) but it plays quality files just fine. It will handle ac3 in audio for avi movies.

It also plays ok with LCD tvs and it can be manually setup to 4:3 and 16:9.

Don't know about sound quality, I listen through my tv and it's crap anyway.

It is fairly quiet in operation but sometimes it makes noises - faint rapid clicking noise when loading a disk, periodical wooshy noises during playback of some highly compressed files (as if it were struggling to keep up the pace). The picture was sometimes jittery but only very momentarily.

My main concern is that this unit will die on me or start acting up within a few months of consistent use: the tray is so flimsy and shaky, and the whole thing just feels cheap.

The remote is fairly responsive though and there are nice features like zoom, 4 speeds of ff/rewind, and 8 memory points. I also appreciate the fact that it powers off completely if left on stop (after about 15 min) but stays on forever if left on pause. It resumes directly from stop within allowed time.

I haven't tried it with retail DVDs but I am pretty sure it will perform flawlessly.

Overall a good player with some limitations.

Chipset: MediaTek MT1389FE
Comments:
Unit description:

The LDA 830 uses the same 108MHz/14bit video DAC as the more expensive LDA 831. Chipset is MT1389FE 0709EEAL. Both units are made in China. For more than twice the cost, the LDA 831 adds upscaling, a USB port for memory sticks, plus HDMI and optical audio outs. Otherwise, the interface and functionality is identical. I paid $50 Canadian for the LDA 830. Good at that price but given the bugs and upcoming HD divx players it's probably not worth much more if you're prepared to wait a bit.

Purchase criteria:

Low cost, Hi Def Divx/Xvid players like the SDH7000 are likely only weeks away. Meantime I wanted a low cost standard def Divx/Xvid player to replace a 2 year old Koss KS5121-2 that is starting to fail (loud motor-rpm related hum in audio output). Provided LG has a newer firmware within the 30 day return period to fix/patch some of the issues I note below, I'll keep the LG LDA 830. If not, I'll be returning it.

Testing notes:

LDA 830 build/bios date May, 2007. Tested using component inputs on Sharp Aquos LC-32D62U.

LG LDA 830 build quality and remote seem better than average for this price range, although tray is the standard cheap and flimsy variety. Some playback bugs show up in extended use. For example:

Froze a few times when switching from WMA to MP3 content on DVD+RW and also when switching content on the DivXTestCDv2.0 burned on a new Taiyo Yuden 700MB CDR. This 'frozen' state, in which the GUI is nonresponsive, can be cleared by either hitting the "Title" button on the remote, or if that doesn't work, by ejecting/reloading the disc via the remote, thereby returning to the starting menu. At least one doesn't have to get up and unplug the thing (as is the case with some Philips and Toshibas I've had), but these are not encouraging signs about the quality of the LG/Mediatek firmware.

Irrespective of media, playback of compliant Divx/Xvids sometimes shows a video "smearing" effect which disappears at the next keyframe. It's similar to the psychedelics seen when having the wrong 4cc tag during playing back on the PC. A friend with another model of LG player reports the same intermittent effect, so it seems to be an LG issue. The same mp4s play fine in other (non LG) Divx players and on the PC. What is weird is that it occurs often enough on LGs to be irritating but isn't necessarily reproducible. So it would seem some random factor(s) is/are at work in the player (e.g. non repeatable media read failure, math error in chipset, temperature issues, induced rf electrical interference or grounding problems, and so on).

Divx/Xvid subtitles sometimes turn on randomly, even though they've been turned off. So they may need to be turned off repeatedly during a movie. More randomness...

The player motor is very quiet but this is offset by a faint "clicking" seek sound particularly evident on CD media. In a totally quiet room with the player in the open it's apparent 10-15 feet away when playing any CD or CDRW. While less loud, it's there on DVD as well, on average once or twice a minute. On DVD it can probably be ignored, particularly in the presence of audio. On CD it's audible above quiet TV audio. Waiting for the next click can be like Chinese water torture.

PAL DVD playback quality is horrible. Perhaps the worst I've seen. Despite being region-free, forget this unit if PAL DVD is your game.

Cons:

- Divx/Xvid playback glitches (see notes)
- incorrect tagged SRT subtitle playback (SUB02 test on DivXTestCDv2.0)
- no IDX & SUB VobSub Image support
- 8x fast foward limit in MP3/wma is way too slow on longer files eg audiobooks
- between 95-100% of 16x9 and 4x3 frame shown i.e. 0-5% frame clipping per axis, depending on aspect ratio.
- Clumsy, deeply buried access to MP3 ID tags
- No search-by-time on audio files
- Slow boot up (~10 sec).
- Poweroff/screensaver timeout too short ( 5 min.) & not adjustable.
- Worst PAL DVD output quality in recent memory.
- Poorly designed file navigation beyond a few files. 1 click per file, no way to page faster. So forget dumping 100+ mp3 files on the root of a disc!
- mp3 filenames are needlessly truncated due to the "program" screen layout
- no time remaining counter (ditto on pricey LDA 831 cousin)
- Front panel time counter unreadable beyond 4-5 feet.
- Front panel shows nothing but time counter.
- No display of video codec types/bitrates/audio samplerates/currently playing filename etc.
- No memory for Divx/Xvid stopping points, compounded by short auto power-off time.
- NO support for common OGM,WMV,Ogg,WMAPro,Flac,AAC,mp4 containers and audio/video formats.

Pros:

+ Region free hack posted on Videohelp DOES WORK.
+ compatible with all CDR/CDRW/DVD/DVD+RW/DVD-DL media on hand
+ OK MIJ media: Taiyo Yuden DVD+R/CDR, Verbatim 2.4-8x DVD DL (Singapore), Maxell DVD+R, Sony 16x DVD-R, ancient Kodak CDR etc.
+ Long filename support on all formats. Greater than 32 chars.
+ Responsive once it's running, but slow booting.
+ No audio sync issues observed on VBR content
+ Tested OK playing/seeking a single 3.8GB unauthored, DVD resolution Mpeg2/Ac3 file on UDF 1.02 FS.
+ OK with older Divx3.11 (SBC) codec
+ OK with Divx/Xvid QPel
+ OK with GMC 1 warp point (jerky but watchable on 3 WP)
+ OK with 1-3 consecutive Bframes+packed/unpacked bitstream
+ OK with mp4 bitrates to 4500 kbps (crashes around 6000)
+ OK with .avi container tests on DivXTestCDv2.0.
+ OK with 3 audio streams per avi, including mixed mp3/ac3.
+ fast random access by time on xvid, divx, unauthored mpeg1 and mpeg2,vcd,svcd
+ smooth 2x forward scan on divx/xvid, just like vcr
+ supports Verbatim MKM-001 dual layers e.g. xvid playback on 2nd layer
+ audio FF up to 8x with sped-up sound may help seeking
+ remote is small but better than most in this price range

I bought this DVD player because it can be easily hacked as region free. I also like the features such as Time Search, Marker Search and Last Scene Memory. I recommend it for its high performance/price ratio.

Just bought this DVD and used the hack code provided. It worked like a Gem, no problem :) Its a great buy for $60.00 and making it region free was super! Use of the DVD is simple enough and although the remote may not be great for people with big hands its functions are clear and easy. Overall a great buy if you don't want to spend alot of money buying a DVD player.

Plays every SD resolution file I can throw at it. Doesn't like high resolution video files (greater than 800x600) Remote control well laid out, but very small. Plays all audio correctly that I have tried.
