This is quite a good player, especially for DivX and Xvid. In 720p and 1080i mode, the output is excellent.

My only/BIGGEST complaint is that while this player will quite happily allow you to play Xvid files off of an inserted memory card, there are numerous sync problems, including dropped frames "racing" as the video decoder tries to catch up. This happened with video on both CF cards (less dropped frames, but bigger gaps) and SD cards (shorter gaps but more drops). These files played properly when burned to CD-R/DVD-R.

This DVD player is awesome except for slight audio sync issues.

My only beef is with LG support. No response back.

Where do we get the updated firmware and why was this player been pulled from Future Shop?

djskribbles can you give us all a direction of where to search for the updated firmware?

There were a few known bugs with this player that worried me when purchasing this player, but it was one of 2 players that did both play divx/xvid and upconversion. The first i tried was the SD-4980, which went back to Futureshop due to small pauses during playback. so i went ahead and bought one for 174 CDN, and overall, i am very happy with my purchase.

The 2 known problems with this player was audio syncing, and macroblocking. So far, i haven't noticed any syncing problems, but i did notice some macroblocking, but its not THAT bad to me. I also heard that it is more noticeable through component, compared to HDMI, and i haven't recieved my HDMI cable yet. My specific player was made on Nov. 2005, so it was pretty recent. i updated to the latest firmware dated Jan. 4th 2006, and i still dont notice any syncing issues, but the macroblocking seems to still be there.

there are various remote codes for this player such as disabling HDCP (to allow upconversion through component), region free hack (although i couldnt get it to work), disabling macrovision, enabling EDID (extended display identification data) and a few others.

a few other goodies about this player is that is plays DVD-Audio, there is a built in analog 5.1 surround sound decoder on the back, and theres a 7-in-2 memory card reader on the front.

a few other small negatives to this player is that it doesnt include an HDMI cable and you can only change the resolution on the player itself. Other than these small negatives, and the macroblocking issue, this is a very good player. i would give it a 10/10 if it wasnt for the macroblocking issues.

HEY all LG LDA-531 USERS!

I have just called in to several Futurshop locations
in hope of finding this great player and was infromed by every store that this product has been totally recalled for unknown reasons.

Has anyone had any faulty players thus far?
Also, do you think this could be some kind of legal issues that this great player is breaking?

Hope this is temporary, i want it.

Great DVD player so far- it's played almost everything I've tried so far. I've confirmed that it plays DVD-MP3 and JPG-MP3 as well. This player has a PAL to NTSC converter and can be made region free. However, the converter is imperfect- I'd encoded one of my PAL DVDs to NTSC, and it plays smoother and with a sharper picture than playing the original PAL disc on this player.

DivX/MPG file playing works great!

One quibble- I noticed that this player had problem with some of the DVDs that I'd mastered with my own menus. My Panasonic S35 had no problem with them, but the LG had issues with several of them- it would navigate to the menu but wouldn't be able to select any of the menu buttons. Hitting some of the keys on the remote would occasionally allow me access, but it was pretty random and I was not able to duplicate my success using the same combination.

I don't yet have an HDTV, so I'll have to wait to assess the upscaling ability.

Has upconverting feature which generally works best set to 720p (Chronicles of Riddick DVD @720p looked much improved compared to plaback on my Philips DVP 642 player) or 480p. 1080i sometimes causes color to bleed or very minor audio synch in rare instances. My Best of the Corrs DVD which has some music videos that are 16/9 image squeezed into 4/3 looked best at 480p & then allowing my Sony HD TV to process the 16/9 "full" horizontal stretch to 16/9. The Corrs DVD had macroblock/pixelation issues for some videos when upscaled to 720p. I paid $165 Canadian on sale @Futureshop & it's well worth the price. An upconvert button on the remote would have been nice. My dream machine would be if LG made a DVD Recorder with front firewire input, Windows Media HD-DVD, DivX-HD & WMV file playback ability along with all of the LDA-531 features.

My amp has a AC3 decoder but not a DTS decoder. I hooked up the LDA-531's optical link to my amp. I tried playing a DTS audio only DVD and it worked; however, my amp would only recognize the audio as a 2channel PCM stereo. This is confirmed on p.15 of the owner's manual. The player does have 5.1 audio output. Unfortunately, my amp does not have this type of input.

Since it will upconvert to 1080i via component, I don't understand why it has a HDMI output. I ordered a HDMI to DVI cable for my TV anyways and will try it.

This player is superb, i did alot of research, and singled a few out, including this one, and the Pioneer DV-588A-S Progressive Scan 1-Disc DVD Player and decided on this one and i am glad i did, region free, plays everything i've thrown at it, including dvdr's and cdr's that i've had laying around for years on end without a thought of them ever going inside a dvd player..

i would recommend this player to anyone, the upconverting works only if you use a backup copy, which i do anyways but that's the only thing that i can think of that could bother anyone who would use this player..

10/10 for me, the layout of the remote is great, the setup menu is superb, and for me there isn't anything better out there for the price.. especially at $150US (179.99 on special in canada at FS)

Will buy this model this week.

To answer Saltyseadog from Canada and anyone else who wants to know. I downloaded the LDA-531 manual and it's pretty clear in numerous sections including 5.1 speaker setup that 5.1 decoding is definitely built in. Even though the web site does not include the AC-3 option nor does it include DD for digital output. Page 12, 15-16 and 31 are quite clear.

"Analog connection to a multi-channel A/V receiver with 6 Channel connectors (Dolby Digital, DTS). This DVD player contains a multi-channel decoder. This enables playback of DVDs recorded in Multi-channel Surround without the need for an optional decoder."

Perfect for my old AC3-ready Yamaha.

I recently purchased the LG LDA-531 player to replace my Philips 642 after I heard the many positive reports about it. So far, I'm very impressed. It plays pretty much everything I've thrown at it in regards to regular DVD and CD, CD-R and DVD-R divx, avi and mpg files. DVDs burned using DVD Shrink play well too.

The colour and picture quality seem to be better than the Philips player. The player is well built and has a nice quality finish and look. The remote is fairly well laid-out and the main keys glow in the dark.

The only thing I'm having problems with is that the player seems to have major difficulty in playing discs burned and finalized using my Panasonic EH-50S HDD/DVD Recorder.

I've tried both Memorex and Maxell (Made in Japan) DVD-Rs recorded at various speeds. One Maxell disc recorded at XP plays fine, but most that are burned at SP and LP speeds play briefly, and then end up pixellated with the picture freezing completely. I'm not really sure why this is. Perhaps the chipset cannot handle the information? I hope this could be remedied somehow...perhaps a future firmware upgrade could fix it?

I will try with other brand discs to see if there is an issue, but these discs play fine on the Panasonic and on my PC DVD drive. They also played fine on the Philips 642. This player is almost perfect for me, but the inability to play these particular discs is annoying.

I've also tried the Memory Card reader slot, and the player seems to take an extremely long period of time to read large sized JPG files (5 megapixel)...it usually takes a few minutes for the player to display the picture.

This looks like an amzing player.. but theres some weid oddities that come up form LG's website when comparing the player to the LDA530:

-The 530 has 108mhz video DAC while the 531 only has a 54mhz video DAC

-The 530 has both DTS and Dolby digital output while the 531 only has DTS

Any thoughts about his? I find it weird that the higher model is lacking in certain ways.

Very good dvd and divx player. Plays every format, every codec and can even read from memory cards. The HDMI output is fantastic, the interface is clean and user-friendly and it supports divx subtitles.
i rated 9 instead of 10 because on mine you can hear slighty mechanic noises when playing (don't know if it's just my model though).

I believe this could very well be the current holy grail of DVIX players out there. I bought this player primarily to play DIVX/XVID files, and this machine excels at it. I compared it with a Philips 642 and it's so much better; both function and video quality. I was really surprised that this player was playing some XVID files (from a HD source) in 16x9 mode! These same files would only play on the Philips in 4x3, even if the Philips was set to 16x9. If you play 4x3 DIVX/XVID material on the 531, you have to switch to 4x3. I've also noticed that some files I have played have packed bitstream and they work without a hitch.

So far I have played SVCD/VCD/DVIX/XVID files on CD-R and DVD+R discs and have had no problems. One thing I have noticed with high bitrate avi files on CD-R's is if you have a lot of fast motion in conjunction with a lot of images (seems to just happen with animated cartoons), it will slow down a bit BUT this will rarely happen and will NOT happen at all with recordable DVD media since it spins faster, so it's not an issue and MPEG4 AVI's look better on recordable DVD.

I give this a 10 out of 10 for Mpeg4 AVI, SVCD and ALL REGION (including PAL conversion) playback. I have not explored the other features yet.

This player seems to only be available in Canada, so I recommend anyone from the US to get one from www.divxcanada.com (which I have not used) or futureshop.com (if they ship to the US).

Jeff

Divx, Xvid and DVD look awesome on this player and DVD-Audio discs and CDs sound great too! It handles DivX/Xvid subtitles with ease and has very smooth forward and reverse that ranges from 2x to 100x speeds. Another nice feature of this player is that it "resumes" from the last point you stopped a DivX or Xvid movie.

In regard to high-definition up-conversion, this player will upconvert any source if you use the HDMI output. People that state the player does not upconvert DVD movies are using the component output. In other words, use the HDMI output to fully enjoy the benefits of HD upconversion on the LDA-531.

By the way, I also own a Philips DVP-642. The LDA-531 blows away the DVP-642 in terms of DivX, Xvid and DVD performance.

Very happy with this one... picture quality is fantastic... also, I downloaded and applied the region crack, it only took a couple of seconds and works like a charm... pal-to-ntsc conversion is perfect. Tried divx, looks perfect. This was a great choice I think and is great value. It's too bad that upconversion doesn't work on retail product... I can't back up everything :).... maybe there will be a crack for that?... who knows. Anyway, I didn't by this for upconversion, I bought it for multiregion capability and divx/xvid capability and it is perfect for that. I do wish, like others, that the remote had a "resolution" button on it rather than it just being on the player itself.

Cheers,
troy

A good player. I already have two other players, now decided to upgrade again. Today I bought two dvd-players: Samsung HD850 and LG LDA-531. Samsung is going back to Future shop. I tested memory cards slot, divx, svcd. It reads some disks that my other players didnot read. My TV is rear projection CRT so I did not use HDMI.

Pros: Nice slim design, memory card and Divx support. Dvd-A support (my car plays Dvd-A so it is nice to have something at home to test Dvd-As when I write them). The region hack worked for me (though I had to burn a CD-RW to do that). PAL disks play nice.
Cons: The remote is cheap. It looks cheap and works slow sometimes. I guess I will program my 'smart' remote and hide this one. I don't see any benefit in upconverting - I think it is just a marketing thing. Also it would be plain stupid if it would work and I would have to backup any DVD before viewing in order to have this upconverting working. The menu is too colorful for me, it is like for children.

Overall it is a good player so I'm going to keep it.

I exchanged my RJTECH1500 for this (the store was out of RJTech and my player, barely 3 months old, now froze on every disc (legit) I put in) so I asked if I could get another brand as replacement and they suggested this. it is MILES above the RJTECH both as a DIVX player and a dvd player. First, it plays DVD-AUDIO. Second, it has memory card slots. Third, it has a much much nicer picture quality than the RJTECH1500 ever had. DIVX decoding is much better as well (no de-sycn problems so far, whereas I used to have a lot on the RJTECH). I am very very happy so far.

Cons: no region hack (so far). Tray rather flimsy (as seems to be the case with every inexpensive DVD-DIVX player).

All in all, a HIGHLY recommended playere from LG. It6 has a ton of features, some usually not found at this price level.

So far the player works great. Very slim design. Plays everything so far. As noted before, it does not upconvert retail DVD's.
One annoyance is the method of upconverting. The button is on the player itself and not the remote.

I bought this dvd player a week ago even though there were almost no reviews or information on the internet about it. I needed something that will make full use of my projector and 10ft diagonal screen so I run the risk and bought it from Future Shop for $200. First of all I was impressed when I saw the DCDi by Faroudja sign printed on the box. Those of you who don't know about it is a technology which deinterlaces the image pixel by pixel instead of line by line like most players. This technology was first found in more expensie players so I was impressed when I got it for $200. This sign was not printed on the player itself nor mentioned in the manual so I opened the box to ensure it has the chip and IT DOES. This player is run by chips MedaiTek MT1389FE, Genesis FLI2301 which is DCDi by Faroudja and a chip by Silicon Image. The FLI2301 handels the progressive scan and upconversions over component and HDMI connections. It can also play divx and xvid as well as other files but I haven't test it. It looks like this player has it all for a decent price.

Picture Quality: is great. Nice vibrant colors much better than my top of the line progressive scan 3 yr old Toshiba player. Upconversion to 1080i was also very impressive.

Sound Quality: I can't realy comment on that because my sound system is not the greatest one but is has coax, optical and 5.1 outputs.

Cons: 1.the only problems I found with this player is the sound vs picture sysnchronization when used in 1080i mode. There is a slight delay, maybe a split second but barely noticible on my huge screen....but is there and is understandable due to the conversion. 2. The remote control / dvd-player response is also very slow and sometimes annoying.
3. Original DVD's can NOT be upconverted to 720p or 1080i. I dodn't know the reason but I'm assuming is a patent issue with the studios or the producers. It only works with backups and it does a very good job.
4. It's not as easy as place the dvd in and press play when used in 1080i mode. You have to change the screen size, aspect ratio and adjust the zoom depending whether is widescreen, full screen or anamorphic. Wish LG would have a more automatic process for it.

All in all I'm very satisfied with this player. I prefer to have a better processing chip for the same money than get all the 4 problems mentioned fixed.

I wish more people will comment on it and write their experiences. After all I migt be wrong and it could be better players out there for cheaper.
